The Aqara smoke detector has been released in China just a few months ago and I have had it for a little while now. Is it any good?
As you can't find it online, you can find the Mijia smoke detector on AliExpress: bit.ly/XMF_AQSD
The Aqara smoke detector is a smart smoke detector that connects over WiFi. It sounds like a bit of an odd choice for Aqara to connect over WiFi instead of Zigbee, but it does eliminate the need for a gateway hub. The Aqara hub is powered using two AA batteries and has a pretty loud speaker. The speaker goes up to 85dB (~3mtr) but is around 115 dB at around 20 cm distance and it 3500 Hz frequency cuts through everything so it surely is loud enough.
You can install the smoke detector in the Mi Home APP to receive notifications on your phone or tablet when the smoke detector detects smoke when you're not at home, and it can be used to set up smart home automation rules using the smoke detector as an input-method. This would allow you to automatically turn on all the lights in the house when it detects smoke, or to turn off all the smart power sockets for example.
Another very nice feature is the "NB-IoT" feature for which Aqara has partnered up with China Telecom. This allows the smoke detector to send out a notification to your phone even when your WiFi network is down. (I am picturing a pretty intense scenario where your router is on fire...)
This is a very comforting thought; as I have tried it out and it worked perfectly!
The NB-IoT feature is only available in mainland China as it seems to connect using a sort of micro-SIM card that is integrated in the smoke detector. This means that this feature won't work anywhere else in the world, until Aqara might roll this out locally in your country of residence.
Also, it is worth noting that this 1) only can be connected using the China Mainland server in the Mi Home APP and 2) if you manage to pick one up for use outside of China you might not be covered by your insurance as this is not a locally available smoke detector but you will have to verify this according to the local rules and regulations and perhaps consult your insurance company.
Overall I am very happy with the Aqara Smoke Detector. Yes I am in China so even the NB-IoT functionality works in my apartment and I feel pretty good about it. I hope that someday in the near future Aqara will roll these out in the US and EU as well as they surely give a peace of mind :)
