If you’re familiar with the name Aqara, you know they create quite compelling HomeKit compatible smart home devices at a reasonable price. The smart wall switch we’re gonna take a look at today is no exception. This is a double rocker in a single switch form factor! This switch will need the Aqara hub to connect to HomeKit, but if you’re new to the system, I recommend the Smart Home Starter Kit. Link in the description.

I was glad you wired both switches to one load. I want to do that so one switch will turn the light on/off normally and the other will turn on the same light, but program it with Home Assistant to flash like a panic light and stop when the switch is turned off. Aqara devices are great. I have them all over my house and outside with no problems. Thanks for a great video.

Thanks for the video, very detail and nicely done, I have a 3 gang wall plate and plan to change only one switch, I am wondering if this switch fit nicely with existing wall plate?

It really depends on the wall plate. The thickness of the switch itself might require some minor “dremeling” of the wall plate.

Would you recommend this over the Belkin Wemo switch or the Lutron ones? As well, do all the Aqara devices need to be in small area? I'm wondering as I have my hub downstairs, but thinking of puting this actually upstairs. Or should they just all simply be on the same wifi network? I see that you have the garage door opener in HomeKit. What do you have? I'm looking for one atm.

great video! but I have a question, for the smart switch to work, is it necessary to buy the aqara hub? it doesn't work if i don't buy the aqara hub? My question comes because I already have an apple mini homepod, and I see that the aqara home does the function of an intelligent assistant, so what I want to know is if I need to buy it so that it works or is it not necessary if I already have a mini homepod ?

Nope, mostly 2-gang, single, 3-gang and a couple 4-gang. Our home was a former model house and they installed too many switches 🤬 😂

Thanks for another great video, is there a aqara 3 rocker switch? I have in my home one switch that control 3 lights circuits . Also is it support 2 way controlling? I mean that I can turn on the same lights from 2 places ?

I’m aware of a single and this double rocker. I believe you’re referencing a 3-way application (2 switches control 1 light source), but no these do not support that usage.

Thanks for the video! I have installed Leviton and/or Lutron switches in every room except the master bath where we have 2 sets of Double Rockers. I could not decide how to move forward in getting these 4 lights into Homekit. While researching, I could not tell online whether these Aqara switches would work, but your video clearly shows the L1 & L2 on the switch, so it looks like this switch is the perfect solution. Plus, you showed in the Homekit app we will be able to control both lights separately, like we can now. It also looks like they can be separated (I see the switch as 2 accessories in Homekit in your video), am I seeing that correctly?

Yes, there are 2 separate switches that can be controlled independently. My home doesn't have double-rockers but if yours does these should work perfectly for your scenario.

@@deborahramey5675 Zero issues so far. My Aqara devices are at least as dependable as my Lutrons. How is wi-fi signal throughout your home?

Rey G It’s decent, I’m using Orbi w/satellites, but even with the Orbi’s there is a room that just has issues. Seems to be due to something in the walls in that particular room for some reason. Luckily that is NOT the room I want to put these new Aqara switches, so hopefully they will work for us. Thank you again the review and taking the time to answer my questions. Great video. I have a bunch of Aqara devices and love the speed and reliability. Quick question. Is this switch only for a single-gang box? I know it is single pole but is it able to be put in a double or triple gang box with other switches next to it?

Yes, it is about the same size as other smart switches and can comfortably fit inside a 2 or 3 gang box with other switches. Thanks for watching!

Rey G, by the looks of it, it seems it won’t fit a normal cover plate. Also, most switches designed to be put in multi-gang boxes have tabs on the sides that you break off....are you sure this is able to be put in multi-gang box configuration? If so do you need a special cover plate?

@@cz8024 The width of this switch is the same as most normal standard US spec switches. The only smart switches that I've come across that necessitate breaking off tabs are Lutron Casetas, so installing these side-by-side in a multi-gang box shouldn't be an issue. The wall plate is a good question because the thickness of the back plate is thicker. I tried different wall plates and I had some spare metal ones that worked fine but some of the plastic wall plates would sit away from the wall 1/16" or so. I felt like I could take a Dremel to the plastic ones and take off enough material to make it work. So the wall plate could be an issue and you might have to hunt around for ones that will work and sit flush against a wall.

What can we do with an empty switch that did not connect to any light?

My current setup has two switches under 1 plate. There is 1 line wire and 1 load wire for each, so 4 wires in total. They are controlling two sets of lights individually, but just installed under the same plate. Is the Aqara double rocker the right option for me? Thank you!

I’ve had good experience with Caseta. Personally, I prefer Leviton because they don’t require a hub and I liked the styling better. Some have had no response issues with Leviton. Lutron did just release a newer Diva switch with styling I like, BUT they are $70 per switch (too much IMO). I say you can’t go wrong with either, May come down to personal preference and/or budget.

Hi Ray, I am a new user who has been approaching home automation for a few months. I already have my beautiful Aqara sensors that I pair with Broalink A1 on some rooms to detect CO2 in the rooms. The next step I would like to take is to take the “first switches” to be replaced at home. it seems to me that they are right for me. My question is: But through the Mi Home app it is also possible to measure the consumed power of the “light” you are turning on? a little how does the Xiaomi QBKG11LM do it? But do you think this switch is adaptable to European or Italian electrical boxes? At this point I ask you: Where can you buy such “switches”? and what price are they indicatively? On the various sites around the network there is still no trace of this info. Thanks for the answer you want to give me.

Went crazy on Cyber Monday and bought 21 different switches along with the new M2 hub. Unfortunately I had nothing but bad luck with this device. I decided just to hook up one switch for test purposes. It’s constantly falling off the network and HomeKit always shows no response. I’ve tried unpairing, hard lining with an ethernet, moving the hub closer to the switch. Unfortunately no matter what I do it’s always a bad experience. Might have to go a different route. Has anybody else had the same experience?

If you need HomeKit compatibility they a hub is required. Unsure about Smartthings as I'm unfamiliar with that platform but the switch is Zigbee compatible as well.

Yes, my older plate actually did fit as there was adequate clearance. This may not be the case for every switch plate. YMMV.

Without the hub it will be a “dumb” switch.

The version I'm taking a look at in this video is U.S. spec and rated at 120v. There will likely be a version for your region but you'll need to contact Aqara for details. Thanks for watching!
