NHL 94 for the Sega CD is the best 16-bit hockey game.

The 1st NHL game is the reason I got the Genesis. I saw an ad in GamePro, and I said, holy cow, what do we have here ? Being a hockey fanatic, and a video game fanatic, I was blown away by that ad. I sold all of my NES games and my NES, and bought a brand new Genesis and NHL Hockey. I was shocked, absolutely loved it, and I would say I played that game 80% of the time, and my other games 20%. Just a brilliant series for the Genesis, with NHL 96 probably being my last one, since I had moved to the Sega Saturn and the Sony PlayStation by then.

Having the last three games being pratically the same sounds like EA's "Legacy" series of games, wnere it's just roster updates and no changes to the game itself. The last three FIFA games on the Switch have all been the exact same game too. But great video Ken, but out of curiosity, what year did the NHL games become more than 2 player?

Not really Genesis/SNES port of 97 was left overs. lol The genesis version as well as snes has the skills comp he mentions That is no where on the sega saturn pc or playstation version. They even have the skills thing on the both genesis and snes for NHL 98 and yet not on the 32-bit consoles or pc.

A lot of the music was made by Rob Hubbard, who was a legendary composer of game music long before he joined EA.

Great review! Was a big fan from the original NHL, NHLPA 93 and NHL 94 for the Sega Genesis. Thanks for the nostalgia and keep up the great work!

I Find NHL 98 on Sega Genesis, The best and most complete version of this game. It controls better and has more game modes and more of everything. NHL 98 is like a better updated version of NHL 94 with more stuff.

Great video! NHLPA 93 was my favorite. Sure no team names but literally the names were the only things missing and man was it cathartic starting a fight after either side gets a goal - and as kids (pre-MK) seeing players bleed like that on a home console blew our minds. I never played any after 94 so this was cool to see, cheers.

By far 93 was the best game. Was even the one featured in Swingers. 94 gets a tad bit overrated every year as time goes on

I notice many people prefer 93 over 94. I'm one of them too. 93 blood and fighting put it over the top.

To bad they sucked from NHL 95 to 98. the game is slower but better music on snes. the player ratings on nhl 95 for snes was a joke. Over 50 players with the rating of 100. The sega genesis has almost no one with the rating of 100 in nhl 95. the games were made by different teams by EA Sega paid EA for their good A teams for their sports games. SNES had their B team. I was alsways a snes dude and my cousin was genesis but i always admitted genesis has better sports games. SNES had the rpg's Zelda super metroid mario games. ect. but MK was better only cuz it had the blood code. lol the MK had better sound graphics on snes.

During the winter of 1992-93, after the bars closed at 2AM, a couple buddies and I would head back to your typical college apartment and play the original EA Sports Sega version until nearly dawn. It's hard to explain how awesome that game was to us, Gen X-ers who'd been raised on Atari Then '93 was even better, and '94 even better (although they should have kept the fighting and blood)...

I played the early games as a kid, but my first I owned was '95. I played through a game of every hockey game on Genesis and nothing could beat '95 for me. The early ones are just too slow with clunky turns and '93 made more sense to play because of fighting. What sucks about '95 is while it has a season mode, your points max out at 255. I was so good, I literally scored either 130 or 140 goals once in a single game. After 99 goals, the game uses shapes as the first digit.

Great Video. Best I have seen about this era of hockey games. I grew up with these games and still play 93 and 98. Gotta have the Fighting to be a complete hockey game, so i never play 94 or 95.

NHLPA 93 was the best. NHL 94 was good too but no fighting or blood made it wimpy. Plus the gamelpay for 93 was better, and the legendary intro music!

93 had no one-timers, no manual goalie control and it's way slower than 94. The fighting is boring, breaks the flow of the game and most certainly don't make up for the things that's in 94 and is missing in 93.

I feel like the NHL was it’s peak in popularity during the 90’s. It was synonymous with the NFL and at times even more popular. Is it any wonder Disney invested so much into The Mighty Ducks through the 90’s?

But ironically, the year the Anaheim franchise drops it's Mickey Mouse image and simply renamed the Ducks, they win the world title, the Stanley Cup.

The SNES versions have their fair share of glitches, like the goalie getting stuck on the net in 93, or the pass "shot" at the goalie in 97 that results in a goal 90% of the time. They also have additional controls with the L and R buttons.

I grew up playing 94 then 95 was the last one I got as a kid I thought it was perfect. Recently I got back into these games and I disagree I think 98 is the perfect game because it’s got the fighting back and I actually like the quicker gameplay.

I agree, 94 was the best start, 95 was a bit better, I loved crushing people into the boards. If fighting was in 95, it would be probably the best, but 98 finally did the right thing to bring it back.

Does anybody else wonder how many niche KZfaq channels are out there? I see so many people from this channel talk about being around since the beginning. The channel probably hasn't grown (in the KZfaq sense) in a very long time, so there probably isn't much for new blood. It's got new wondering how many pocket communities that exist on KZfaq. Fans that have been around forever just to support the channel we love and a creator who says "fuck it" and just keeps making content, I assume for us but maybe out of boredom. Anyway, was just curious if there were other >20k subs channels that aren't just grave markers. I'll keep supporting this channel dude. I liked this channel more than avgn back in the day and still do to this day.

I am big fan of the first game because its the end of the 80’s era of hockey no expension yet northstars are here new jersey devil green and red jersey and the sqare in the goalie crease !!!

"EA Hockey" was the same game as "NHL Hockey" outside of North America. The one difference was "EA Hockey" had international teams instead of the NHL franchises.

@@AqualungGameReviews , are you sure? In my experience EA Hockey plays much faster and you can get into fights after the whistle blows, including after a goal is scored.
