I got my hands on the new Aquarium Co-Op Air pump with built-in battery backup, but is it worth the cost and how does it compare to an air pump that has been a standard in the hobby for awhile - the Tetra Whisper 40 Air Pump. Let's check them out, see how loud each one is as it runs and see just how much air they are putting out.
You can find the Co-Op's new pump on their website here: www.aquariumcoop.com/products... (not sponsored)
Want to go with an old classic like the Tetra instead, you can find one here: amzn.to/3LExqjM (paid link)

I'm hoping they come out with a bigger model. The noise level is nice, but the battery backup is definitely the selling point. We deal with a lot of short power outages on the island and would be nice to not have to run around hooking up battery pumps.

Another great review! I've replaced all my Whisper pumps with the CoOp ones and I'm very pleased. The CoOp pump powers sponge filters on 2 20g tanks with no issues. I love the nano pumps, but I have a horrible habit of not cleaning sponge filters regularly (they're backup filtration and air for me, and it's nice to always have a seeded sponge for quarantine tanks). I've burnt out two nano pumps when the sponge filters attached got too clogged.

Hey Bentley, I just wanted to point out one thing about the Whisper that I just discovered. If it starts to get loud or make any strange noises. First unplug it, get a screw driver and loosen the screws and the top cover will come off. Once you are inside, push down on the rubber where the arm pivots off of the diaphragm, clean the dust from around the edges and screw the lid back on and it should quiet it back down. Now that I know I will be doing it every few months

I've owned several Air Pumps. I decided to stick with whisper, until I found the AC pump I switched because it was noticably quieter while still having fair air flow. That is good enough for me. The fact that this new one produces more air and is still quieter than the whisper makes it very enticing if I needed a replacement or new pumps. But now that this can run off of its own power it is undeniably worth upgrading to this new model. I hadn't had any power cut off issues for years up until this one in which I've experienced two within 2 months of each other. One occasion was 30 min the other an hour. I wasn't to concerned as power in my area has to be restored very quickly. I have been looking into getting a power supply for such occasion but selfishly haven't made it a priority. I realize now that the next outage can be much longer it'll never happen to you until it does. I love that AC isn't complacent even when their products are as good as it gets in the hobby, they continue to evolve and refine things. To answer your question yes, I will upgrade all my previous ac pumps with the new one as to have peace of mind if ever I continue to lie to myself that power outages don't happen enough.

I purchased two of the Coop pumps and so far I have really liked them. I upgraded my nano usb pumps to the Coop air pumps and having the battery backup is awesome. I wish that when it went into battery back up mode though it would automatically switch to power saving mode instead of staying in normal. With that said I will be slowly switching out the remaining usb nanos to these new pumps so I can have that extra piece of mind if my power goes out.

I have three Aquarium Coop air pumps. The pump is quiet has roughly double the output of USB pump, of which I have several. One new pump is on a bedroom tank and is not a bother when going to sleep. The battery backup is a nice peace of mind feature. The pump cord is short and uses the older micro USB connection instead of the newer USB-C port. Overall, I think the pump is a winner. Nice review, thank you.

A nice quick comparison. I love the Co-op USB pump and it's all I use indoors because it's silent and will never go back to a Whisper or the like. I've only had one USB pump die on me and that was after at least a couple of years running continuously. My area isn't prone to power outages so the battery backup of the new pump isn't really that big of a draw for me. But with the higher air flow of it I'll probably give it a try at some point and see of the extra noise is worth it to me.

I bought one to try out. I use my tetra whisperer to run several tanks. I wanna see how well the Co-Op one does in the same situation. The battery backup was definitely a selling point. I don't mind the sounds. I actually find the background tank sounds soothing.

Using microcontrollers to add real features to the hobby..... YES PLEASE. I would love to spend an hour even with the co-op and share ideas and things that would drastically revolutionize or make easier things for new and experienced keepers. Having the ability to "extend" the life of the battery by having it tick on and off is a cool thing. My issue is that I wish the battery was 4-5x the size (at least 2-3x bigger) for extended down times. I do plan to get one when they add the usb-c port and I will be getting them to replace the old style D-cell battery ones I have. One of the big issues I had previously is that they would just not function. I like that you can clip this on a bucket or easily have it in a small space to add security if your HOB fails. It's a nice little trick..... There are things I would like to see addressed (visually and aesthetically I don't like the way it functions) but the features themselves are nice. I would be interested in a "pro version" with a bit more capacity and an overhaul. Something that looks like the aqueon quietflow pumps is a good start for the case itself (those pumps are insanely quiet and well designed, just don't last long enough if you don't set them up right) So. Make sure you use a gang-valve/gate valve (both) and then by all means I would love to have one of these around.

My opinion is I would definitely get one! However I have a whole house generator, so battery powered air pumps are not something I need to worry about. However it would be a good pump for those going to trade shows and what not that will be getting lots of fish because you could splice the air to 2-4 buckets on your ride to and from. Think it has more uses than nano and you could always have it hooked up to a back up pack to have an extra long time to run off battery if needed.

I’m curious as to what you’re going to find when you open it up. I’m wondering whether it is a lithium with the circuitboard regulator down to 1.5 V or if it is a 18650 battery that’s going to decrease power overtime when running off the back up.

Will be nice when they have them back in stock. When it comes to protecting your fish , cost really should be no object unless it a huge amount. I want to get one when I move and convert a larger cooler into a transportation tank. Hopefully they have replacement parts like the tetra pump down the road. But for the amount of use it will get, should last a while. But as an emergency back up, this is good option! Thanks for the great review.

Just a suggestion but maybe do a part 2 video testing the battery back up on the Aquarium Co-op pump. Great video on the rest of the features also helpful in deciding what size tank I would use this pump on basically 3 feet or less. Definitely wouldn't use it on a 4-foot tank after watching the video.

Whisper has been my stand by...quiet and cheap can't be beat. Lol If the coop model holds up to time, I would pay extra for the design features. If I understand you correctly, and it Can be mounted to my wooden racks...I would consider testing it now.. These pumps could solve a design issue I have with two racks...My construction and mechanically minded husband thought he Had this...lol. My tanks couldn't fit any snugger without fear of pressure cracks. Great for lots of things ...but not for aquariums that have equipment. 🤪🤪🤪

Thanks for this comparison. Personally I use cyber power 650va ups', home depot has them for $50, but I can definitely see why this is a nice product if you don't use those. I like the on/off switch too, and there's a big noise difference. I don't like the short cord, and I'm guessing as with any power cord, you would lose a tiny bit of power if it was longer, and am kind of curious if it would translate to any noticeable air flow drop if the cord was as long as the one for the whisper pump? Regardless, I always enjoy tank equipment comparisons--i bought a jc&p light based on your reviews and so far love it. Thanks Bentley! 👍

Bentley, nice comparison. I’m not convinced the AC pump is much quieter based on what I saw in your video. Using a dB meter on your iPhone would have helped demonstrate and visualize the difference. Either way, the Tetra pushed more air, but the battery back up on the AC pump is a really nice feature. I will not be a customer of Coops air pump and plan to stick with my Jehmco LPH80 😉👍

Bentley, based on what I saw, I would buy the Co-op pump. Battery backup is something I want. If it was not for the battery backup, I might not, as I have my own favorite pump. What I would like to know is how long did Cory test them for? Usually he puts a couple of years into his testing and that would be good information. I'll be glad when I can buy from Aquarium Co-op, I'm mostly interested in the products with their name on the box. Thanks for the report! Another helpful video.

I was surprised to see that it compared to a pump made to support a 20-40 gallons because it is not strong enough to run 2 co-op sponge filters.. unless something is wrong with mine (definitely possible) it won't run a small & medium sized sponge filter. 🤔 I am sure Cory will get it perfected & I have full confidence in their products. @@BentleyPascoe one of the big issues I have is depth of air pumps (not enough force to run anything more than a stone in a 18" tank). I'd love to see side by side by side testing (maybe run it over a week?) To show degradation as the filters wear in/cycle themselves. For a permanent air pump, it's an interesting design. For a short term security system, it's perfect. As an example... Some pumps I've had cannot run the ziss bubble bios but I've had to get pond grade "deep" pumps from tetra to do the job. I guess it's all that carbonate hardness in my water. 😂 (Issue is especially persistent when I was running one tank with one ziss bubble bio and a stone (or sponge) or multiple bubble bio's and the pump could only handle one item or only work while everything was brand new/clean and flow was not restricted.

Not gonna lie, I don’t like the whisper at all because our walls are paper thin and we have neighbors. I bought a pump off Amazon that barely makes any noise, and it’s definitely no louder than the sound of water the sponge filter makes. It also has two outputs which I’ve found immensely helpful since I don’t need to try to “balance” the amount of air between two outputs, as well as a knob to adjust the air flow. (I totally didn’t buy it originally just because it was shaped like a shark…) I would really like a battery powered one for a backup, but I’m so in love with the convenience of having multiple outputs on the pump itself along with an adjustable air flow that the fact the Aquarium Co-Op one doesn’t have those features is a deal breaker. I’d pay a little extra to get a second output and an adjustable air flow.

Very interested in the Co-Op air pump as a backup. Bought the Tetra Whisper 100 for a 75 gallon tank. Within two months, one of two air ports quit, the diaphragm went kaput. I contacted Tetra wishing to get a replacement diaphragm for it. They responded that diaphragms aren't warranted and they wouldn't replace it. WHAT? It's only two months old??? It would literally cost them pennies to send out a replacement diaphragm for good customer PR. NEVER will I buy a Tetra product again (except for a replacement diaphragm this time). Sorry for the rant, but Tetra burned my biscuits. Curious though, if the diaphragm is replaceable on the Co-Op...
