I had a leak and I was THERE TO CATCH IT! I actually heard the dripping sound. Because my puppy was having a tough night and crying and etc., so I relocated to the living room to get some sleep. Thanks Penny!
It goes without saying that I realized I had to make some serious improvements to my plumbing situation, there is no way you can rest easy knowing you might end up with a total drain-out on the floor when you aren't looking.

I came by this video because I want to set up a planted aquarium with my FX5 but I absolutely hate the black platic in/out from fluval. I have 16cm OD stainless still lily pipes and a 16cm co2 art inline diffuser. but fluval's 1" OD clamps mess everything up. Great explanation on how you solved your problem. Don't worry about people nagging, that's how internet works. I move a lot and I have never found the same fittings in 2 different places. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

Really nice piece of work David. I'm buying the FX6 later this month and will use your lessons learned as well as remember to add enough hose length to keep my intake and discharge ports well separated. It's a shame Fluval doesn't adhere to standard plumbing OD and ID sizes. They really need to address the critical hose issue ! Thanks for sharing.

Nice job! I used 10ft of 1" ID reinforced vinyl from the aquastop valves to barb fitting at the tank, then 1" PVC elbows painted black to go over the edge. If I had to do it over I would do hard PVC all the way to the canister and connect to the aquastops with 2ft washer drain hose. This black tubing looks cleaner though, would've been a lot easier if Fluval just used 1" ID instead of 7/8. Only change I would make is moving the intake and outlet to opposite ends if possible but it looks good.

Thanks for sharing this.. has a pinhole leak after 11 years of using fx5 ribbed hose.. good thing I was on scene. Great solution.. is the tubing in in video still the best hose material you use?

I appreciate the positive feedback, thank you. Yes this is working great, have had no issues at all, because as demonstrated it is essentially plumbed using outdoor materials. I wouldn't expect any issues whatsoever, would expect a problem at filter due to failing valves long before any other type of plumbing issue.

PVC shrinks. Especially if exposed to UV rays. The pvc hose will shrink before the thicker pvc fittings. So in time your glued connection will fail. The fitting needs to go INSIDE the hose to avoid leaking over time. But good ideas.
@hugheymorrow
@hugheymorrow 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Do you know what kind of time we are talking about for shrinkage to occur? I have 2 fittings to modify so shouldn't be to big of a deal to address.

@@hugheymorrow When I was a youngster I had a pool business. And I was always going behind plumbers that used flex PVC pipe into PVC fittings as they would begin to leak. The time it took varied. But was inevitable. Granted you have little to no UV rays hitting the plumbing. But still I would not be able to sleep. Anyway... I will try to come up with a better solution for you. Think it over and see if you can come up with a way that the hose will "shrink" ONTO the fitting rather than the hose shrinking inside the fitting. Great videos by the way. Discuss look amazing.

Did you ever come up with way to get the hose attached? I too cringed at bit at inserting the hose with just glue.

The black 1inch hose you got has a od of 1.32 inches but the threaded to slip connector you have has a ID of 1 inch. I can't figure how the black hose can fit inside the slip? Does it just fit or is it very very tight?

I am really sorry but you did not use the connections the correct way. If you get a leak it is not going to be manufactures problem but an installation error. It is unfortunate that people are watching this video and learning how to do things the wrong way.

@@hugheymorrow OK. When you are connecting a hose it has to go on male end not inside with glue. You have to hold it in place with a hose clamp. On the opposite side you don't put the hose on a threaded end but on male hose end. You can use a transition union. Ideally get all your dimensions internal diameters and all your transition pieces and just go to hardware store for pools and they will most likely have all the parts that you need. Avoid amazon valves hoses and connections because you don't know what quality you are buying and this can lead to a leak. The hose with the pin hole failed simply due to poor quality control. Basically cheap hose from unknown origin.

@@MickyMouseLimited i have been given similar advice in the comments on this vid, just havent found the right parts yet. Looking for these connection fittings I can use for this pvc flex tube, and this is good advice. Someone else was telling me about pvc flex tube shrinking over time so if it can shrink over the fitting instead of inside a fitting that is ideal. Still looking for the parts to do the job and probably make a 3rd attempt video for perfecting the plumbing and explain the reasons this solution isnt good enough, if I can get the right parts and make it work like you are pointing out here.

That hose is wayyyy to expensive on Amazon. $75 for 50’?
@hugheymorrow
@hugheymorrow 3 жыл бұрын
yeah might find it 5-10 buck cheaper somewhere especially without shipping. Cheaper than replacing hand-scraped wood floors. All a matter of perspective.

Is the 1" tubing link above correct? On Amazon, it says that that tubing's ID is 3/4"... doesn't it need to be ID of 1"? Or, is the Amazon info incorrect? Thanks!

when I go to the URL I see an amazon page for MaxFlex selling different diameters, you choose the correct one from the options.

I have a question for you does this hose fit into the fluval clips that go over the back of the tank
@hugheymorrow
@hugheymorrow 4 жыл бұрын
Not really no, but my tank is drilled at the top so I don't need those. If you need something like that to solidly hold the pipes in place over a glass tank, consider maybe pvc elbows? something.
