Here's an aquarium water change tip for sump filtration users. It's something I do to increase the volume of my water change, taking advantage of the extra water volume provided by using a sump.
For more water change tips and tricks, here's my full water change playlist:

How do you do water changes? Watch the video then share your thoughts in the comment section below, keeping in mind that on this channel, "We ALL LEARN FROM EACH OTHER!" Also, remember that many of us, including me, enjoy reading the conversations that take place between all of you, the "Convo Gang," in the comments section.
If you like the content of my channel, and haven't already done so, how about hitting that sub button and bell? Your support is noticed and greatly appreciated!
For more fish fun follow me on Instagram at: ben.o.cichlid.
There's a friendly and helpful fish keeping group on Facebook called: "Ben O'Cichlid". Cichlid is in the name but all fish keepers are welcome. If you're on FB, check it out. If you want to join please be sure to answer all the join-in questions so that the admins approve your request (it's how we keep the trolls out!).
Stop by on most Saturdays for the "Cichlids & Coffee" live stream. Great topics, great people and your questions get answered LIVE! It's usually at 11am Central time.
Watch the stream while drinking out of a Ben O'Cichlid coffee mug or wearing a channel hoodie or tee. Visit my store here: teespring.com/...
and be sure to use the code "LIVESTREAM" for a 10% discount at check-out.
Shout-out to Christopher Martin for the Cichlids & Coffee logo and to Sam Penny for the KZfaq channel banner art. And a big thank you to Phil Griffiths for the dropping fish video and channel icon!

Top tip! You could also have a larger water volume by simply adding a reservoir into the system under the tank setup which in freshwater cases could make water changes even easier because you wouldn't need to prat about siphoning it about, you could simply lift the reservoir from under the tank setup, take it to your kitchen sink, flush it and then fill it up and simply replace in the setup under the tank. Hope that's understandable. Beautiful tank BTW.

As a novice, I have never used a sump; however, the option for increased water volume and treatment is attractive. Thanks for the skills we might have the chance to use in the future, Jim

It's fun to design your own filter. And the available space for nitrifying bacteria and water polishing is unparalleled.

I dont understand how this is any different than taking a larger amount of water directly from the tank? The water in the sump is the same water that one has in the aquarium. Would appear to me to be extra steps in removing the same total amount of water from the tank/sump system...

Some people siphon their tank, then remove water from the sump to increase the total vol. of their water change. This advice is mostly for people that were doing it that way. Now they don't need to run a hose into the sump to remove extra water, just let the pump move the water up and keep the siphon going in the tank. At the end of the day, yes, you could achieve the same vol of water removal by just siphoning more water from the tank. However, some, like me, don't want to do that because I usually keep the canister running during the water change and if my water level in the tank gets too low, the canister starts sucking in air. By moving water up to the tank and raising the water level during the water change my canister can keep running without sucking in air. Make sense?

I've watched about 50 videos trying to find info on what I'd need to start my own marine tank. I was struggling with finding out what goes in a sump and your video hit the nail on the head. Subbed just for that fact! Thankyou. Please get in touch if you have a list of everything I'd need to get going. Would be much appreciated. I have a tank and a sump and really wanna try marine fish. Thanks

I do a 2 gallon per hour drip of well water into my k1 fluidized bed 40 gallon sump which sits under my 210 gallon tank. The sump has an overflow that drains to the outside garden. So I continuously have well water dripping into my sump @ 2gph. I have not done a water change in over 2 years except to catch fish.....I lower the water for that. And I never have to do top ups. The sump is for biological filtration. I use an fx6 for mechanical filtration.

@@BenOchart Yes sir, still surviving during this crisis. You should continue to do sump videos. All people who really get into the hobby eventually go the sump route. I can't even imagine how I didn't do it earlier than I did. It really makes everything much easier and gives you more options.

@@BenOchart Exactly why I watched this one! I bought a used 65G that has a "trickle" filter that is filthy and of no design I can find anywhere, possibly homebuilt. I try to watch everything I can about how to use a sump to get enough info to attempt to set it up. I've never had a sump before and tbh, it terrifies me. :)

Ok you’ll love this in my saltwater tank I turn off all pumps and power heads and heaters with one switch vacuum out tank and sump using python. I have barrel in basement with 1 pump to mix salt and buffer and heater to heat. Have large pump witch I control with my phone to pump though pipe through floor right up into my sump turn on sump pump and let fill up tank until correct level

Sumps are awesome i hear. I have an fx6 and an aquaclear 110 on my 125. Hey Ben. To me it seems that if you have wavemakers, they should be turned off at night so the cichlids can rest comfortably. Do you recommend this?

I have found that every system is different. In my case I utilize a submerged media sump in an overhead configuration. This means that when I shut my pump off for a WC I have less overflow to the display. The only real downside is that the return pump is inside the display and requires a pre-filter.
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 4 жыл бұрын
I wonder if you could use an outside (dry) pump so all you would have in the tank an intake or bulkhead? My only concern with that would be the noise since I hear outside pumps can be loud.
@wereboarder2009

@@BenOchart Totally a plausible concept for a glass or acrylic aquarium, however in my case it's in a 300 gallon IBC tote. I would need to utilize a uniseal or the 2" stock bottom drain with some adapters and a method to prefilter.
