I've had this issue in my aquarium twice already and although I'm not sure what the cause is, I know now how to get rid of it and how to keep your fish-tank safe from this annoying fungus. The very first seconds of the video are prior to doing the first water change and the rest of the video is the after, but you will be able to easily spot what I'm talking about.

No! Please don't do more water changes, you'll just make things worse! This isn't an algae or a fungus; it's a heterotropic bacteria bloom. If it's a new tank that's cycling... you just need to wait it out until it's starved of organic matter to feed on. If it's a tank you've had fish in for a while... check your ammonia levels, check for any dearly departed fishes or plants, be cautious not to overfeed, vacuum your gravel to remove organic matter (excess food, fish poop, etc), gently clear your filter with tank water, and consider adding "good" bacteria (beneficial autotropic bacteria products) to your tank to decrease nitrogen. Then lower the risk of future blooms by doing regular 30% water changes, not overstocking, not overfeeding, removing decomposing plants and dead fish as soon as you notice them, and keeping your filter running smoothly.

Hey thanks for the comment and advice. Awesome. This thing is sneaky and I've seen it at worst and no hope was on sight. Will pin your comments and hopefully it does a better job. For me, it took me about 5 weeks maybe less. Now the tank is at its best and doesn't even require water changes, honestly. I saw this old guy speaking about no water changes and it has been a process and haven't done one change in about 6 months. Just top off and feeding. Nothing else.

@Vivir SimpleMente Glad to hear your tank is doing well now! Yeah, there's stuff in tap water that the bacteria feeds on and the water changes while its reproducing just give it more food to eat. Those stinkers can multiply within minutes to hours of tank setup!

@radiantrosie hi I know this is a old video by everytime I buy fish this white stuff comes in my tank and kills all my fish (platies) I want more fish but they only last for 1 month then they die. I have checked all my nitrate and ammonia levels and change 20% water and filter. It's like fine for platies bout then they die. Can you help me.
@radiantrosie
@radiantrosie 7 ай бұрын
@korey5318 Sounds like you are likely adding more livestock than your beneficial bacteria can support. It's always a balancing act between adding fish and giving your tank time to catch up in building up more beneficial bacteria. You won't be able to see those "good guys" as your tank cycles. Cloudy water and white slime on driftwood are the "bad guys" aka heterotropic bacteria. They can reproduce rapidly - like doubling their numbers in minutes! - so even when you've just cleaned the slime up or you've done a water change, it'll be very disheartening to see that they are back almost immediately. A buildup of waste products feeds them, so water changes actually make it worse because there are organic compounds in tap water that they feed on, so when you do that, you're just encouraging them to flourish. What you've got to do it starve them out. This is done by not providing waste material, fish food, etc for them to feed on. In other words, you need to add only a few fish at a time to your tank and allow plenty of time for your tank to build up more good bacteria to support them. During that time, treat often with Prime to protect your fish from ammonia spikes. That's why they are dying. The "bad bacteria" turn waste into ammonia which kills fish. Even if your water parameters tested fine at first, it doesn't take long for things to swing out of control. Here's a great video that I highly recommend that may explain things more thoroughly than I have: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/apyWlqun1MvQnH0.htmlsi=Y4Fu2VO6sE_JRJB1 Best wishes for your fishes! 🐠

Of course, thanks for the info. We are here to learn. Just stick to your water changes and pick the fungus with your hand and gravel vacuum. ALSO NOTICE that if your filter gets too much, just wash the whole thing with water and dry it in the sun for one hour or two. The tank will be back to normal in no time. LOVE YOUR COMMENT

I have a single plant in a glass container that sits on my windowsill. I still get this every once in awhile. I rinse the plant off along with the roots put clean water. I still don't know why this happens. It's a white fungus so I don't understand if I only have one plant in a single glass container with no fish why they still happens. I guess from stuff in the air settling in the water 🤷

Hello you guys. I am not sure if this is the same problem but I think I figured out where the stuff that looks like this is coming from and feel stupid. I use tap water to fill my aquarium up when it evaporates and keep the water in plastic gallon jugs to let the chlorine evaporate. The plastic from the jugs deteriorates and that is what the white algae stuff was. Again not sure if its the same problem here but figured I'd share.

I have the same white stuff. I believed it was a type of algae and blackout would solve it, but it didn't. I believe it's also clogging the filter as water is overflowing over the filter media. It's very very slimmy.
@vivirSimpleMente
@vivirSimpleMente 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. It does....thanks for the comment. If it got that bad, I recommend this because it worked for me. Besides the water change 3 or 4 times a week, clean the filter. If it's possible open it and clean it well. I ran a piece of cloth thru the tube and let it dry in the sun for well over 4 hours, The whole thing. The sponges and media were also rinsed but with the same tank water, ok. All was done using the same water. I also used an old toothbrush to clean and then continued with my water changes. You shoud see the difference, obviously the same week. But please limit the chemical but only use the water treatment. Food plant is good but also limit. And just continue the water changes. I have been back to normal and only do water changes every 10 days on the clock.

@@vivirSimpleMente I have an AquaClear 20 and it feels like the sponge and carbon are so slimmy, it doesn't even rinse out well. I may replace these parts. Yeah I'm trying water changes, as 4 days of blackout didn't really reduce the number of this algae or bacteria. It's very frustrating as I can't find much information about it. My tank is not even planted so I don't know how this is happening. I will be adding floating plants to suck up nutrients too.
@vivirSimpleMente
@vivirSimpleMente 2 жыл бұрын
@@francoislelievre-lemelin6983 Agreed. Plants will be good but only after. It will be better to do it once the whole thing is cleaned. Replace the sponges if you want. I also forgot to mention to reduce light during this process because I noticed the algae grew faster with light. I had mine with 10 hours, but reduced it to 6 during the process and left it with 8 afterwards. I KNOW IT'S frustrating, but dont worry. It will go back to normal. You night have to clean the filter weekly, and rinse the new sponges weekly. Good bacteria lives in the sponges, that's why I suggest to replace them only if you can't save them.

That's also happens to me.... but really can't find information. This is the first video.... but I agree maybe it's plastic problem (I saw on a another comment). I was using a temporal plastic vase, using water (actually drinkable water) from a plastic bootle. (and recently my syster complained that there was a slime thing in the water that she was drinking,and told us to never buy the water from this brand again... ) And then, when I was changing the fish water, I saw a lot of slimy thing pushed out from the water, and it was also some of them attached to my floating plants.... after that, when I changed my fish to my oficial aquarium, this have come together.... I am washing my plants with this things with disinfectant, and cleaned a little bit. I for me didn't worked well changing water method, because this is a new tank, and I think beneficial bacteria it's not going well now. And I needs to wait 3 days to change water (I am with just a single bottle now. I am considering to buy fishes that eat this type of algae, and try to make my beneficial bacteria wins this algae. Now there is no fish In my tank, but it's still a little bit of it in my substrate
@vivirSimpleMente
@vivirSimpleMente 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the comment. It is quite common in New tanks. And it seems to me it has to do with bacteria, of course...excess of it. Better filter will get rid of it, But the water changes are "mandatory" It has worked for me to stick to the routine. I use less plant food than before and less fish food so it doesn't linger around. But overall. It is the water changes. I won't use anything else on my plants but try to the remove the slime with my fingers weekly and during the water change...once a week. It does Wonders.

awesome, i've been having this slime problem for 2 months now, it clogs the filter, the water stays cloudy, coats the plants in slime and makes them die off, when bringing up the discussion to the groups , they all say it's driftwood but that's not true because driftwood is very clean. Maybe I'll try a daily water change like yours, but do you add a microbiome every time you change the water?

Hey, thanks for the comment. I have to say that this is not regular algae. This is more like a fungus so any type of nutrient makes it worst. Also notice that is NOT the stuff that grows in drift wood either. Water changes and removing as much as possible with your hands will do.

Mine has started to do this just this year, its gummy and it clogs my filter so I just keep sucking it out and doing water changes. Then changing the pads out otherwise it coats the surface so there’s no movement. I don’t have real plants in it but it will coat all the faux plants I do have. I have the betta Fluval aquarium which I’ve never had issues with until now. I have always used the pre conditioned water from PetSmart since I only have a 3 gal tank and it’s been so much easier for me to just top it off in between changes

@@kaylaschmidt1111 what helped me was remove as much as possible from plants and filter, 20 percent water changes 3 to 4 times a week. minimized feeding to 2 times a day. I also reduced lighting to 4 hours, since this bacteria grows in it...Or at least i believe that. I stopped putting any other additives to the water other than the dechlorination. After seeing results maybe a week later, I did water changes every 3 days, increased my light by one hour... and so on until all got back to normal. Now i do water changes every 2 weeks, only 20 percent and top off when needed. Keep the water changes and you will see normal, but avoid over cleaning because there's plenty good bacteria that is needed in the tank. I hardly do that. I mainly vacuum the gravel and rinse filter in tank water once a month.

Had white fungus on my plants. Sprayed the surface with vinegar. Killed some of the fungus. Also killed some plants. My tank water then turned white and cloudy, and fungus is back. I've heard about the vinegar but never tried it. What worked for me was the water changes, not over feeding, and reducing light. This was done for about 3 to 4 weeks, then slowly increased light and eliminated water changes all together. Now I don't don't do anything except fertilize plants once a week, top off lost water and feed twice a day. I did the 90% water out of desperation, and cleaned filter and let dry in the sun at one point. But what did it ,was just simple water changes and remove by hands as much as possible.
