The one thing that should always be said in response to that is, no. Anything captive bred should not be released into the wild. You are doing more harm than good. (Unless you are an actual trained professional.)

IMPORTANT: Never set a marine pet free by flushing it down the toilet or a drain! It can be sent somewhere it doesn’t belong and can ruin the ecosystem, instead, give it to a pet store, or another place that will take your pet for you, same goes for fish tank plants, don’t flush them! They can become invasive this way.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't this why they still aren't that common in the reptile hobby since they need very specific pH levels and filtration? They may be less than 100 bucks in a lot of reptile stores and expos nowadays, but the cost can still come from all the equipment they need to thrive.

@Evan Gonzalez here's reasons why. If you release you axolotl, they probably won't know how to fend for themselves, because they've been fed on a schedule their whole life, and they'll most likely s die from starvation. If you take them out of the wild, they will become even more endangered, and there are only about 200-500 left in the wild

Also, the reason axolotls are endangered isn't due to the pet trade, its because their habitat is being threatened due to pollution, overfishing as axolotls are a delicacy in Mexico, habitat loss from development projects in the area, and invasive species being introduced in their habitat. They are native only to lake Xochimilco, everything I mentioned above is happening to that lake. Breeding programs aren't working because there's almost no habitat left to repopulate. The pet trade is the only thing keeping them from fully going extinct, not just in the wild.

There are animals in captivity that don't have any habitat left to live in, the white cloud minnow practically went extinct in the wild but is one of the most common pet fish. Sometimes a species isn't profitable enough for a zoo so its hobbyists that choose to own the ugly extinct in the wild fish rather than the pretty one in hopes that the species can be saved later. There is an endangered small fish in my area that is at risk because of our laws prohibiting captive breeding without a lot of paperwork that no one is doing because its a fish no one has even heard of.

As an Axolotl lover for 5 years and an Axolotl owner for 2, (this is from what I’ve observed with MY axolotls) Axolotls act a lot like humans in a sad way, If you get an axolotl, it won’t seem to like you at first and will hide away in little spots in the tank, I see this as like a bff situation in real life, one you get a friend you don’t instantly trust them at first, but you guys slowly become better and better friends, with axolotls, the more you show you care for them they start caring for you, but once one of those friends go away, you’re sad, I let my axolotl out of her tank for a few seconds so I can take out something in the sand, she was a yard away from where I was and looked really sad, when I picked her up she instantly crawled up my arm to hug me. This is more of of Axolotl fact, please don’t give away or throw your axolotl into the wild if you’ve kept them for over a year, they can get really sad if away from the ones they love most 😊!

Do know though that they aren't exactly beginner-friendly. But yes, having them available as pets in the reptile hobby is a good thing because it creates what is called a lifeline for the species where the species is reserved in captivity so that there are genetic pools to pull from should the wild population ever get wiped out. Even just having them in the hobby has allowed for more people to learn how to properly care for them, improve their care overall and make it easier overall to preserve them. Back when very few could have them, it was way more difficult to know how to get their pH levels needed, what they were sensitive to, etc., but as this knowledge has been shared and perfected, better filters and substrates have been made to make it easier to care for them and knowledge and materials for them is more readily available. This resulted in axolotls costing hundreds of dollars and being nearly impossible to keep healthy to being less than 100 dollars with filters and substrates and foods made just for them. Best of luck on you getting one, but just know that they might be harder to care for than something more sturdy like a leopard gecko.

You can also tell her that axolotls available to buy as pets have been captive bred for generations and most of them are actually hybrids (many got crossed with tiger salamanders a long time ago) rather than “true” axolotls anyway. Unless you’re buying from a shady seller next to the axolotl’s native habitat in Mexico, there’s zero chance the axolotls you find for sale were taken from the wild.

Animals should only be freed when they’re: 1• Native to the area 2• Trained by a professional to survive in the wild and deemed by a professional to be able to survive 3• Completely healthy and free of diseases, non native parasites/insects, etc. 4• Not unnaturally genetically affected aka „wild types“. For example, fish that have been bred to have long fins, unnaturally patterned animals that may draw further attention to themselves or create offspring with an imbalanced advantage towards other species, or genetic diseases that may be underlying and passed on through later generations. 5• Legally allowed to be freed in the area. 6• Will be either beneficial or non harmful. Even if releasing for example 20 healthy and trained bald eagles into an area where they’re native, that may be too much for that ecosystem to handle and they may decimate populations, fight, or just plain die off from lack of a food source. Etc. Releasing pets is how there are goldfish and koi decimating wild populations and ecosystems. How there are tons of invasive budgies, parakeets, parrots, etc. in more tropical places, how Florida has a massive invasive snake problem, etc. Not to mention the vast majority of the time, the pet will die slowly and painfully of starvation, overheating, freezing, or will just straight up be hunted because they aren’t built for that environment. Those people commenting that are stupid. They lack the common sense to do 5 minutes of googling before spouting utter nonsense and looking like buffoons.

Even native species shouldn't be released if they've been kept in captivity. If an aquarium or pond has housed livestock from outside of the area (even species that would normally be found locally - it's very rare for pet store stock to be locally bred), it could be harbouring diseases that the local ecosystem hasn't been exposed to and hence has no immunity against. Long story short, just don't release your pets into the wild. It's inherently unsafe for the ecosystem.

The problem is groups like PETA that actively do things like this. Other people see the “rescue and release” videos and posts and don’t think about the harm it does to the environment and other animals, so they feel like everyone should do the same because this company that claims to help animals did it and it looks like everything turned out okay. In reality, they are not educated in rescue and release and have no professionals involved with those posts or videos. They do it for the attention (and money as a result) it brings to the company. @@khairallahdh Yeah, sadly here in Mexico there’s a lot of ignorance and a lack of culture and education, people throws garbage to the lake where this axolotls live, as you said there are a lot of projects to save this species but population is not the only problem here, government is an obstacle they do whatever they want without thinking in collateral damage to the ecosystem

This is why many people shouldn’t even be allowed to have exotic pets or pets in general. The overall lack of understanding can be both dangerous to others and the environment. “Just release them in the wild” is a great indicator that you can’t be trusted with pets.

Flushing a fish down the toilet means instant death. Sewage is sent to a processing plant, which it is treated with chemicals and filtered out, then piped to large vats for more chemical treatment. That fish would be dissolved by the time it reaches the ocean.

Axolotls live under perfectly balanced conditions. The moment you throw it out elsewhere, it's not gonna survive. The reason they're so endangered is because the one place they come from is rapidly changing to a condition poorer for axolotls to live in. They will thrive in an environment that you keep up to be those exact conditions.
