Areekkal watterfall
Areekkal waterfalls - located 35 km from Kochi at Pambakkuda panchayat in Piravom-Muvattupzha route. The silver, shimmering water cascading down from around 100 feet with forest and rubber plantations in the background is a sight to behold.
The waterfall which attracts domestic tourists saw an increase in the number of visitors in 2014. Following this, Anoop Jacob, was the Civil Supplies minister in the former UDF government, launched the Areekkal tourism development project. An entry fee of Rs 10 was introduced. Barriers were constructed around the waterfall and the entry time was restricted, with visitors being allowed only from 9 am to 6 pm.
The ideal time to visit the spot is from June to September. The monsoon showers increase the volume of the waterfall. “Due to the extended monsoon this year, the waterfall remained strong even after September. Now, during most of the weekends, the spot gets a good number of visitors, especially youngsters. Most of the people prefer to come here since Areekkal is suitable for a one-day trip,” said Sadanandhan, the watchman.
Drinking alcohol and smoking are totally banned. “We are also maintaining a good waste disposal system here. Visitors have been asked to help us maintain hygiene and cleanliness by following the guidelines issued by the waste management authority,” he added.Meanwhile, lack of public transportation facility is one of the main issues faced by the visitors. “Only three buses ply through this area. Another problem faced by the tourists is the absence of benches and chairs. Lack of adequate shelters or waiting sheds is another problem,” he added. However, there is a toilet block near the facility.
