Thanks to MagPul for sponsoring this video! I was happy to use one of their new Daka Grid rifle cases today - it's a very cool system that will be of great use for me both because of its modular configurability and its excellent security.

Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenweapons.com
The AR-57 is a system developed by Rhineland Arms in the early 2000s which uses the FN P90 magazine (and its 5.7x28mm cartridge) in an AR upper. The magazine mounts on top of the barrel, and it ejects downward through what would normally be the AR magazine well. Any standard AR lower can be used, although the company (AR57; a separate firm spun off for this product) sold complete guns using OEM receivers form Aero Precision.
The uppers were made in three barrel lengths, and I have here an example of a first generation full-length rifle and a second generation SBR with a 6.25" barrel and a GSL Technology suppressor nested inside the handguard.
Further thanks to Battlestar Gatlactica for the loan of the 1st generation rifle!

When they found out why all the sudden interest in mags when they hadn't really been selling many of the commercial PS90's, they were visibly pissed. I think everyone who has played with ARs much has that one 'Funky' magazine that they got in a trade or something. That's the perfect magazine to gut and cut away the feedlips for a brass catcher! I am wondering about caliber. I see Five point Seven but I heard Ian mention .22 LR while shooting at the 'Spinner'. I also noticed @ 9.29 the disassembly showed the rear AR takedown pin completely removed. I heard Ian say it was a Cav Arms lower and didn't know if their lowers were meant to have a captured (rear, front, both ?) Takedown pin system. Nice video but this is unusual for Ian. I mean this video leaves more questions than answers! I also kinda wonder about availability and cost of the magazines. If the unit (firearm or upper assembly) is available in 5.7 and .22 LR, do the magazines function with either cartridge? I don't guess all this matters too much. I already have one safe full of .22 plinkers and probably won't be buying one. It is more about curiosity and knowledge, I guess. Ya'll Take Care and be safe, John

@@JohnDoe-pv2iu the feed system on the magazine is too harsh for .22 rimfire. The 5.7 bullet is effectively the same size as a .22 (.224) and has the same (roughly) overall case length as a .22 WMR, but it is fatter, and has roughly 60% more energy than the WMR. The rounds are not interchangeable, and magazine would wreck the thinner rimfire cases. The AR-57 is not available in any rimfire configuration.

@@InvidiousIgnoramusUnfortunately, I think it won't scale that well. I think the barrel can be used as a gas piston (that's just a trippy sentence!) inside that barrel sleeve/gas-tube-thing because of the relatively narrow bore (the 5.7 being a very dimensionally svelte cartridge) and that larger calibers would make the system awkwardly large. The 5.7 also operates at pretty high pressures, and I'm also not sure how well the gas system will work with lower pressures. But who knows, I could be totally wrong. There should be an ad for Pelican cases that stars Ian. He’s sitting at a table with his head down, hair falling down around his face, in what looks to be the recreation room in a Jail. A Pelican case is shown being loaded up with a priceless WWII StG44, the pre-production EM2, and a Zip gun. The case is locked, then tossed from the second floor observation deck down into the recreation area. With his head still down, the camera swings around to Ian’s face…his eyes open, looking up into the camera, a sinister grin forms a moment before he flashes out of frame. Banging, smashing, bouncing noises ensue. We hear Ian streak: “there’s no key!” Followed by silence. We see Ian sitting at the table again, head down, eyes closed, a tear crawling down his cheek. The camera pans to the Pelican case and follows it as guards enter and carry it back up to the second floor observation deck. The case is opened, revealing all of the weapons still in their places, perfectly protected.

I remember first seeing pictures of the AR Five Seven when it started popping up in Venezuela mid way through the crisis happening as a result of the corruption and rewriting of the Venezuelan constitution by Maduro to make him essentially dictator for life. Both in the hands of the Venezuelan Army and some of the Colectivos as well as in the hands of dissidents. It still to me is one of the most alien looking things because of the fact that the mag has to sit in the hand guard and feeds down with the spent shell casings going through what would be the mag well, which is trippy when all I ever saw until that point was conventional ARs. That said, it still looks cool all these years later and it's amazing that it still manages to have an alien look to it whilst being a fun little plinker. Thank you Ian for doing an in depth look into this oddity that continues to gain popularity.

With the high cost of 5,7x28 ammo, a Slide-on case catcher on the flared Mag well would be Ideal. Can be made by 3D printing in plastic, or a steel neck with synthetic Textile bag below. You can take a standard ar15 mag, cut off the feed lips and have the brass collect in the mag, can also take the mag base off or use a shorter mag and attach a bag to collect multiple magazines of brass. This made the system really good for heli shooters in my area, the brass dosent go anywhere near the blades and 100% was retrieved for reloading. At the time when guys were using these for culling wallabies the cost was so prohibitive so everyone wanted to reload.

Well déjà vu all over again. This is my second exposure to AR57. The first was the guy at range the shooting table to the right of me yesterday! I believe his was the “new” companies and was the 16” version. I can report no self ejecting magazine where experienced. Wish this vid came out 1st so I could ask if the new version has an out of battery trigger block. AR57 guy was rather pleased with the firearm performance and accuracy at 50 yards! Some what unrelated …I stated he was to the right of me because I was serving as a comp blast block from the lovely gentleman with the 300 Win Mag with a howitzer brake to the left of us! AR57 guy and I moved off the line until Battleship Boy finished blowing stuff around on my table and AR57 guy could go back to concentrating on sighting in his AR57 instead of lifting his head up wondering were the incoming artillery blast was coming from! So I guess I should be thankful because I might have never had that conversation AR57 guy without Battleship Boy’s “thoughtful” intervention! If anyone is considering being that “thoughtful” in the future please consider putting some thought ahead of the full out war on your fellow range buds!

I put together an AR57 build with a KP-15 lower after seeing it in the background of your gwacs lawsuit update video! It's a lightweight and fantastic little carbine! One issue I had was that the proprietary buffer that came with the AR57 was slightly too big around for the buffer spring that came with the KP-15, but that was easily solved by buying a new buffer spring.

I've been pretty interested in getting the Third gen myself, probably do a 13.9" P&W to the original barrel, just to take a little length off. I wasn't aware they didn't have OOB safeties, that is a little concerning, given how expensive those magazines are.

What makes the "FSS Hurricane" in MW2022 more interesting is the fact that it still has an AR-style charging handle while it incorrectly has a bolt hold open when the magazine is expended. Would really love to hear if you have any "analysis" on how the "FSS Hurricane" in the game could work with its own configuration.
@ShubNiggurath-jw3so
@ShubNiggurath-jw3so Жыл бұрын
Yep, that fact confuses me in why they decided to give it the AR charging handle instead of the actual side charging handle, the real life gun has. I don’t see why it would be hard to animate the gun with the side charging handle.
@fish_birb
@fish_birb Жыл бұрын
@@ShubNiggurath-jw3so honestly I think it’s their way to make the gun look different to avoid copyright claims. Albeit I am quite intrigued in how such configuration would work especially how the inner workings of the “FSS Hurricane” would work. I’m making a head canon in which Ian in the new MW universe talks about the FSS Hurricane and its inner workings, explaining how First Signal Solutions (the fictional gun manufacturer in the game) managed to do the weird gizmo in making the 5.7 upper receiver to still accept standard AR charging handle configurations. 😂

Just for giggles I checked Ammoseek this morning (02/04/23) and 5.56x45 is going for 29.4 cents a round with the 5.7x28 56.5 cents a round. (223 Rem was 31.5 cents). I think in a year or so, once there are more 5.7 out there, the cost may drop some more, but really, you can get a S&W ar-15 22lr cheap and it will fill a similar roll as a range toy. CCI Stingers (32gr copper coated bullet @ 1640fps) with a 50 round drum mag while not a small and compact would still do the job at a faction of the cost. I mean, it is just a range toy after all.

Yeah, a gutted AR mag makes a great brass catcher. One note - it works better if you cut the feed lips off (I just sawed the magazine off between the top of the mag catch and the bottom.of the feed lips), but you'll want to verify your floorplate doesn't require sling tension from the follower & spring pushing against the feedlips for retention. It was a *perfect* use for an old Thermmelt, I mean Thermold, magazine I had lying around. Not sure how many brass cases a gutted 30 rounder can hold, but it's more than a full magazine, that's for certain.
