To give this song some context, this song was sung by prisoners of war during the war with Japan who were being lead over Arirang hill to be massacred. and during the Korean civil war. It was to encourage everyones heart.

SoHyang arranges ALL of her covers she sings. It’s all her. She is THE MASTER, and not just vocals only. Most reactors do this one first. You got hit like it was the first time watching her. She is that good. On my humble opinion, she is the best female vocalist on the planet. Nobody comes close to SoHyang. And the last part of her name is pronounced like that “a” is a U. Like SoHyung. That is how she says her own name.

Arirang can be interpreted in many ways, but in this song, i think it means a big hardship that koreans have faced historically. On the lyrics, mt. Baekdo is the highest mountain in the north korea and mt. Hanlla is the highest mountain in the south korea. So “from mt. Beakdo to mt. Halla” means the both sides of korea. The whole song means, even though koreans will face many troubles until the unification, they should go on. the Koreans is the only one who has a division country. So you guys can’t empathize easily with the feeling that the song has. If you know the historical things, you can understand this song better.

A satisfied sigh is a great way to describe it! She captures us, leads us through an astonishing vocal and emotional experience, then releases us, dazed and amazed, when the story is complete. A master of her craft.❤️

Arirang has no direct translation to English but the idea it represents is along the lines of very hard work or diligent struggle. The song is based on a Korean folk song that has evolved over a period of 600 years and now is an allegory for their desire to reunite north and south. Sohyang is difficult to rationally explain. She might have died from cervical cancer when she was 20 but credits God with her healing. Yet a bad blood transfusion at the time of the surgery left her with hepatitis B. Normally that is easily cured with antibiotics but this was the rare incurable variety so it plagues her to this day with a compromised immune system and she contracts pneumonia rather often. For a four year period from 2016 to 2020 she was battling it eight different times and was almost out of circulation in the musical community. Thus Sohyang knows what it is to be chronically ill for a lengthy period of time but again credits God with teaching her invaluable spiritual lessons from it. She has largely been fine since then but did come down with covid19 for two weeks in the summer of 2022. Thankfully she recovered well and at the age of 45 sings as excellently today as she ever has. You are right when the thought comes to mind that there is no way this woman is 45! She looks 10 or 15 years younger, at least! But it is true. She was born on April 5, 1978! 🤷‍♂ Professional "super star" level music producers (David Foster), singers (Michael Bolton and Josh Groban), teachers (Seth Riggs) and vocal coaches aplenty are pretty well stupefied at how much talent is wrapped up in this tiny five foot four inch, 100 pound woman. Sohyang has trained her central nervous system to the point, and developed such articulate muscular control, that her singing technique is perfect. She is considered a master singer. Literally. Again Sohyang gives the credit to the divine entity, stating her voice "is from God." Obviously she has taken her singing talent to the nth degree, and tells others who want to enter the world of professional singing that they must be born with a good voice and then work very hard to develop it. But this barely scratches the surface of who Sohyang is and how talented she is on stage. Her stage presence and body language are unmatched in my experience, much like what Elvis Presley had fifty years ago but different, of course, since she is a sincere Christian woman and believes in presenting herself in modest yet excellent quality theatrical attire and with absolute confidence and purpose at all times. I have also found these high production value South Korean music presentations to be as good as you will find anywhere on the planet. They show Sohyang in the best fashion possible and these seem, to me, as good as you would find at _any_ of the Grammy Awards in their heyday. When you add a Super Star talent like Sohyang to the show, everyone who watches it is quite rightly blown away. 👀😮💥👌😎🎸🎙👽🛸💖💖💖

This song arguably speaks to the Korean's suffering in history and its people's perseverance in enduring hardship together with fellow countrymen. However, this song has taken on additional significance over time as now it is often regarded as the symbol of the collective desire of Koreans to see a peaceful and united Korea. She did not win this segment of the show because the Traditional Elders really approve ...The Gentlemen In the Green You saw Won this He is Very well known...But he approved ...as You Know Kim, So Hyang does her own Re-writes and then instruct the Band What she is Looking for...so She in in the Total Production Loop.... .The solo violinist here is Sue Son and the back and forth between them is a big part of why this is my favourite version

I've watched a fair number of her performances now, and what has been one of my favorites parts is in this song at the end when she goes from the huge vocals, pause, into the most delicate vocals as if nothing had just happened. I don't know what about that grabs but it does. I can't say another performer do that with such....true ease. Great reaction!

The voice of an angel, for sure! But the heart of a saint as well! In my opinion, the reason Sohyang evokes such strong feelings in the listener is that she's coming from a place of humility and honesty. When she sings, "Our hearts will be one", she BELIEVES it, and you believe HER! She connects with the listener in a profoundly truthful and impactful way! This is something no amount of technical skill can accomplish by itself!

Btw, the original Arirang Alone is not a traditional folk song even though used the theme of the traditional folk song Arirang. The song came out in 1990, but the singer sang in 60s or 70s fashion and feels like an old song, but not even a traditional folk song way. SoHyang on the other hand weaved the original 3 verses song into 2 with the original meaning and used both traditional and modern instruments and amazingly managed to express the totally different North and South Korea with the violins and broght the dissonant chaos into unison expressing the unification of Korea. She also managed to put the most well known original Arirang in the middle of the song where people sang along with SoHyang which is not in the original Arirang Alone and managed to put Korean traditional rhythm in the song. Btw, Song SoHee also sang this song in traditional way.

This is truly an epic masterpiece. One of the world’s best live performances I’ve ever witnessed. Simply stunning no matter how may times I watch it. I hope it’s on her playlist next week @pechanga.

Do yourself a favor and react to her Korean performance of “Fate”. One of the most unbelievable vocal last few minutes of a song I’ve ever heard vocally.

This song and Bridge Over troubled waters are my2 favorite songs of hers (but I haven’t heard any that I didn’t love). So Hyang is friends with another Korean singer that I love named Park Ki Young. My favorite songs by her are Nella Fantasia which has an opera vibe and is so beautiful I tear up every time I listen to it. Yeonan Pier has a jazz vibe.

One of my favourite parts of this performance is when the older Korean man (wearing the hat) is nodding and smiling. She is doing justice to a beautiful song that belongs to the painful history of Korea. Dokdo is a small island of rocks the Japanese say is Japanese, despite it belonging to Korea on all Japanese maps before the 1900s occupation. korea is still trying to get it acknowledged as korean land. so the lyrics "Dokdo, did you hang in there okay last night?" is even more poignant.
