It's important to note that Hebrew also uses "min" to denote "from". Both "min" and "me"/"mi" are correct. The sound [n] is weak and Semitic languages tend to drop it, or swap it for something else. That's how the [n] of "min" was dropped, leaving "mi" and in certain environments "me". Many roots with the sound [n] tend to behave irregularly when used in verbal conjugations, primarily they tend to assimilate the [n] with the next sound. If you say "min London" many times, you'll notice the [n] is barely noticeable.

Hey Maha, Loved your lessons and the Hebrew vs Arabic series, I loved each and every one of them, would love to have more, I also liked to notice that as a native Hebrew speaker I was amassed to how good is your pronunciation in Hebrew as well as in Arabic, you just nailed it. Best teacher ever ,and of course a really good looking one(If I may add). Best of luck with your videos.

Great message Maha. I'm Jewish Canadian Israeli (wow, long description!) and I've been learning Arabic for a year, also for the purpose of bridging that gap between us! And really, the languages are so similar that once you learn one it's so much easier to learn the other.

Both! It has to do with phonetic changes. When the country starts with the letters א,ה,ח,ר,ע then the preposition is prononounced as “me”. With the rest of the letters it is pronounced “mi”. For instance: Ani mi-Sfarad (אני מספרד) vs. Ani me-Amerika (אני מאמריקה). Hope it was helpful!

Thanks. I started learning Hebrew in 1974, believe it or not, I have never been able to grasp it other than a few words here and there. Arabic even less so. I don't know why but being from a Romance language country, they are more inter-connected with me & my ancestors.

Do a vid about Layl & Laylah,"Night" in Arabic & Hebrew I have heard the word "Laylot" "Nights" or "Evenings" in ancient Spanish, believe it or not-coming from the Jewish influence in Spain,or Sepharad in Hebrew. The regular word for night in Spanish is Noche (No-Cheh) & in Portuguese it is Noite (Noy-Teh in Portugal,Noy-Tchee in Brasil - I speak all three).Just like Arabic & Hebrew being "cousin" languages,Portuguese & Spanish are also cousin languages. Thanks,Maha for all you do 4 language.study

Arabic coming from Aramaic is sort of right in the sense that Arabic developed much of its grammar from the Neo-Aramaic language that flushed into Arabia. However, much of its vocabulary is totally distinct from Aramaic and Hebrew. Either way, these are just educated guesses and theories on origin, though I'd say most authorities would certainly not claim that Hebrew comes from Aramaic. Heck, some would say that Hebrew is actually older than Aramaic (or at least the generic Caananite language).
