Collin Hay has sent me his footage asking for feedback. Only recently he has taken up sculling, originally coming from sweep rowing. By the way, Collin, your technique looks very, very good considerin how recently you have taken on sculling.
Nevertheless, his main issue is a classic one, almost every sculler, no matter how experienced, has. Here is how I solve it with my athletes.

Very helpful tips, I am starting to row in an area called Delta del Rio de La Plata, a set of rivers to the north of Buenos Aires, Argentina. There are several rowing clubs in that area.

So many of your attention points make sense. Really sound analysis, based on mechanical engineering, human fysiology and rowing experience.

You remind me of my coach! When I first started sculling, I thought that I was pretty good. My coach asked me what I was doing. First of many humility. A complete retraining program commenced. After many hours of video review of my sculling , stupid mistakes and many hours of practice , I learnt not to always muscle the boat, but that proper technique saved me much energy that I could use in the beginning, to increase my stroke rate and for the charge at the finish. My new technique eliminated any pauses, rocking of the boat and the oars literally popped out of the water with little effort at the release. . What use to be a slug fest was now a rowing technique that saved me much energy for when I needled it the winning of many races. Best thing--no more humble pie!

I´ve taken onboard the crucial importance of pelvis preparation.; no coach has ever mentioned this and I notice that none of my fellow rowers prepare their pelvis.body weight for the catch as you very well explain here in this video. Makes a huge difference also realising that you should not place body weight on the handles which you get if you try to reach too far - something trainers always seem to ask for. Thank you again Aram.

Would the analogy of an accordion the way one folds at the catch and unfolds is the secret sauce. Should the folding and unfolding be the same granted add the slight back lean at the finish. Just curious what thoughts are. Thanks

Much like a dancer, a new person doesn't know where their feet are in relation to the dance step. If you watch new dancers they either take too long a stride, or too short spin. You have to adjust to the DANCE. In our case, rowing the body is moving all over the place when learning a new Dance Move. In our case the slide. Your body must adjust to space, and space is the Release moment from the water to the next Entry which we call a Catch. In between these two parts of the dance move. Damn we can screw it up, especially when we combine other people in a multi person shell. Time, distance, and coaching input can help a great many people overcome the Dance of Death our sport of Rowing.

By the way, I am a 13 old rower in Hungary and this video helped a lot to improve my technics. So, I would be very happy if you could answer me, why my arms get very tired at the start of a race?
@AramTraining
@AramTraining Жыл бұрын
Probably because you engage your arms too much too early, or possibly because of bad blade pitch.

As a coast guard officer who did a number of investigations on deaths from hypothermia and personally almost drowning in 50 degree water (canoeing in Seattle in Nov). You might last only a few minutes before you loose body functions. If I could wear a full dry suit or wet suit and row I might consider rowing but might be uncomfortable
