Extension of the Ly-O-Lay Ale Loya (The counterclockwise circle dance) 5.14 "Normo Jovnna" remix by Sacred Spirit.
Lyrics.
Ley O Lay - Lay Le Loy Lao
Ly O Ley O Lay - LaLe Loy Lao
Le O Le O Lo - La Loy La
Ly O Ley O Lay - Lay Le Loy
Controversy
The song "The Counterclockwise Circle Dance" is presented as a native American chant, however the main vocals are an authentic Sami yoik ("Normo Jovnna" by Terje Tretnes), recorded in 1994 by Dutch Channel 4 during an interview as an example of a yoik. The recording, despite Channel 4's denial of having sold it, then mysteriously ended up in a Virgin Records studio in Holland. The Sami organisation Sámi kopiija have demanded royalties from Virgin Records but this has so far been unsuccessful. (NRK Sami Radio 21.12.2007)

I'm mostly white. But, I have Chickasaw and Cherokee native american in me. I went to a native american history museum in rogers Arkansas. I learned a whole bunch about my heritage.. I have to say native Americans are the true Americans. They were here first. Christopher Columbus did not discover America first, the native Americans did. This is their land. Me being autistic, and native american partially makes me happy. I get to learn so much. I am reading a book about the Navajo tribe. This book was a gift from my sister from the museum..I have my favorite tree that I read under. But I love all..but native american people have a genuine spot in my heart. With love, Alie Wood The autistic lady

Ah this brings back such treasured memories of my son 5 at the time singing all in native language I read later for him to understand in English. I'm registered in complementary there pies then we went around feeling the energy around our plants and hugging trees on the way to school. I feel akin to lovely north American friends.

I am part Cherokee on my mother's side, and I remember the native American story of the maiden girl that a great beast of a cat was going to tear her apart, until her compassion touched the great cat's heart, as she was kneeling beside a wounded deer, trying to help it,by absorbing it's blood with her fine dress, offering water on her BEAUTIFUL hands, from her canteen, stroking the head, and trying to comfort the deer, and so , because of her kindness and humanity, her life ,in turn was spared, yes, he was moved that there she was ,kneeling down in the dust and dirt ,in her finest of clothes, to help the deer, ...truly a wonderful person, who did NOT deserve to be ended, and this ,the great cat could see .🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I'm Finnish and Native Cherokee and knowing the history of this song explains why this resonates with my soul. I feel, as I sing, my ancestors sing with me. It is Thanksgiving, a holiday I cannot celebrate, knowing that it was made possible through their exploitation and suffering. Its a day of mourning to me. The spirits of those departed find in me someone who acknowledges and feels their pain so they may heal and rest easier. We grieve for the exploitation of Mother Earth, the source of life which is to be celebrated and respected. The land belongs to nobody, but we to the land. Singing like this is a powerful source of healing and connection to each other, and the earth upon which we live.

This is a SAMI JOIK in origin, NOT native American. Even though it's simular to Native American, it is not. Credits were credits due. The singing is an old traditional Joik from Northern Norway, by Indiginous SAMI singer. It was stolen by producers at Virgin Records, and never given credits anywhere. The real deal with this song. source Sturla Molden: This is the Sámi joik called "Normu Jovnna", performed by Terje Tretnes from Karasjok and recorded by NRK Sámi Radio. The joik belongs to a man called Jon Normo, a fearless bear hunter who got the joik after he had to wrestle a brown bear with his bare hands. He was saved when a fellow hunter shot and killed the bear. Normo had commented something like "what a pitty you had to use that long metal pipe when I was about to punch the bear on its cheek." This forms the basis of the joik's lyrics. Normo's fight with the bear happened in the 1960s. The recording of Tretnes joiking Normu Jovnna was pirate copied by Virgin Records after it was played on Dutch Channel 4 in 1994. Virgin did a remix and edited out all the lyrics to hide the Sámi language. They then added this music video showing what is presumably two young Lakotas. They then went on to show their mockery on MTV as an example of North American first nations' music. It also ended up on their record "Sacred Spirit". Tretnes never received royalties from Virgin, nor did they ask permission to use or remix the recording.

Controversy In the first album, the song “The Counterclockwise Circle Dance” is presented as a native American chant, however the main vocals are an authentic Sami yoik (“Normo Jovnna” by Terje Tretnes), recorded in 1994 by Dutch Channel 4 during an interview as an example of a yoik. The recording, despite Channel 4’s denial of having sold it, then mysteriously ended up in a Virgin Records studio in Holland. The Sami organisation Sámi kopiija have demanded royalties from Virgin Records but this has so far been unsuccessful. (NRK Sami Radio 21.12.2007)
