This week in what I'm doing, how I'm doing it or 5 minute whatever...
ARB FRIDGE! This mystified me at first - how to power it, how to run the wiring, how to mount it... it was too much for me in the beginning. BUT, this is how I figured it out, what I did, blah blah balh.

I totally left this out. Haha. The REASON I ran dedicated power to the fridge, rather than use the 12v plug that’s back there is BECAUSE: that plug back there in the 5th gen 4runner is not hot all the time. When you shut the car off, it cuts power. I completely forgot to show you guys the plug the wiring terminates to.

I was thinking the same thing. how did you connect it direct ? I am looking for videos showing that part. I am thinking to take the two wires I ran back there and connect them to a 12 volt plug.

I'm currently working on a 2006 Sequoia 4x4 that has a pull out kitchen with cooler, sink and stove. The main box accommodates the 3rd row area back to the hatch, then I have a 2nd box that I store in a cargo cage behind the SUV and at night I flip up the 2nd row of seats, insert the box and it becomes a full size bed. It also has storage on both sides of the box and you can still access the pull out kitchen and the storage drawer on the left side as well as sleep 3 more in a rooftop tent...so essentially it carries 5 and sleeps 5 all without having to pull a trailer behind me :)

Nice job. did a similar setup but I prewired a fuse panel where the converter is in the passenger side wheel well. Then used the ARB DC plug to the ARB DC socket. worked great.

Hi. Recent F150's support AGM batteries via flipping some bits in FORSCAN. You change some hexadecimal to option no. 8 and when the battery needs it it ticks a little over 15 vdc for a while. I run a Group 27 Odyssey in mine this way and only plug it into a tender when it sits for a week or more. I've also used XSPower batteries, they're comparable and are available at Batteries + Bulbs locations.

Great video as always. I'm glad you covered what you doing, it helped me think about what I need to do. I wish you could go I little further into the solar. Maybe it's not as complicated as I think? Look forward into part 2 of the ARB fridge.

The best way to do it if you dont want to use dual battery system is to buy GOAL ZERO YETI 1250 PORTABLE POWER STATION its very useful , specialy this model because it can be connected to other batteries if you want to get more amps ,you can use it to run the fridge ,fans , lights ,charge your laptop and so on and it got a built in inverter up to 1200w and you can use it to charge your main car battery incase of emergency , its not cheap but its safer than using your main car battery

Thoughts on using something like a goal zero yeti and plugging it into the 110v auxiliary plug in the back of the 4Runner?

I have a tip that will cut the amount of work you need to do almost in half. You may have your own reason for this, but you shouldn't need to run the black (negative) wire back to the battery. As long as you have a solid grounding point (metal contact that should also be connected to the negative terminal) you will only need to run the positive wires. I've done this for wires I've run. (amp, seat heaters, backup camera, etc)

Thanks for this. I am currently running a seperate battery box with 12V and USB outlets that allows me to have portable power at camp and between vehicles. However, I'm really interested in a more permanent solution. If your in need of video ideas, I would love to see how you are running your solar system.

I run my fridge from the lighter socket while mobile but have a portable 120 ah battery box with outlets for when camping kept topped up with a solar panel. If going for long camps away if needed I have a 600w inverter wired straight to the battery and a 20 amp several stage charger I can use while driving along to top up the 120 ah battery if weather is no good for the panel. For me it just gives more options.

An exhaust fan in the compartment you want the fridge in in the trailer would do a lot of good, but having it in your vehicle is probably better for a lot of reasons beyond your vehicle being cooler. I especially see the benefit of being able to leave your trailer at your campsite and still have cold beverages when you are out driving and/or it is with you if you have to go shopping either mid-adventure or in daily life.

I have a 65 quart Dometic fridge which rides in the back of the Jeep JKU plugged into the rear convenience outlet. I've heard that the wiring to that outlet is too small on the JKU to push the needed amps, but so far no issues (other than the fully loaded fridge is a heck of a lift for one person). At camp, the fridge comes out and sits on a table next to the kitchen. It is hooked up to the Turtleback dual battery system which has a 100 watt solar panel that seems to keep up with usage; I might run the generator (Honda 2000) every second day for an hour to top up. For drinks on day trips I have a Pelican ice chest with cold packs replenished from the freezer on the Dometic. Similar situations can have very different but working solutions!

I'm looking to run a inergy kodiak with 3 panels and a fridge. I would think a system like that would be more plug and play than going thru the hassle of rewiring to the car battery albeit pricey. I think it would function in the long term.

Jason. I’m looking at a 50qt arb vs Dometic. I believe dometic makes the arb fridge. What are your thoughts on the size of the 50qt. I’m also looking at the 63qt size as well

I have had a Dometic 50qt for a little over a year and love it! I like how it opens from the side vs the front giving you more room to actually open it and see what is inside in a tight space. I got mine from Apexoverland.com

I still have the factory battery, and I have a dash camera with parking mode hardwired. It’s set to shut off at 12v. The camera always dies overnight. You’re right that the factory battery can’t hold up to much when power is drawing off of it.

I want share what I experience with the arb fridge I have, it's a 50 liter, when I shut the truck off, the low voltage sensor would would shut off the fridge at any amp setting on on fridge. I'm using the 12 volt factory plug. Since its only a 10 amp fuse to the factory 12 volt socket, I replaced it with a 30 amp fuse and never had this problem again.

Sojourn Overland Thats nkt a good idea. The fuse is a 10 amp because its suppose to break before the other components in the event of a short circuit. By going with a larger amp fuse, now the wiring could be the weakest link in the event of a short circuit and thus catching on fire, inevitably burning 4runner to the ground.

Samuel Butler Jr. I understand your point and I was thinking this too, the fridge just would not work on any setting when truck was off, my logit was 12 amps times 30 amps equals 360 watts, and I still got voltage protection.

Hey bud, you issue is probably due to not having the proper gauge wiring run to the ridge itself. Look up the max amperage draw for the fridge and how far the wire run is and then use a wire gauge calculator to find out the proper gauge wire for that bad boy and i BET your issue goes away with the proper wire size. There are a lot of factors in fridge power consumption. External temp, contents, fridge temp setting and even the power source you choose... i.e 12v vs 120v. You start to get into dual battery area when you use it as a freezer opposed to a fridge, and if it's only half full you'll use a considerable amount more power than if you were to fill it with frozen goods nearly full. We've found 200W of solar to be the perfect offset to running in freezer mode in the summer time. Or you could just start your vehicle every 2 hours but who wants to do that? Cheers.

CampRoyale If you are going out for more than a couple of days with a “wet ice” cooler you may have to use dry ice to keep food frozen and dry. But keep in mind dry ice will freeze everything so no drinks in there!

how is your fender/wheel well holding up? a couple of local guys (San Francisco, CA area) that are running group 31 batteries experienced cracking in the fender/wheel well area near the upper control arm due to the weight of the group 31 + stress from off roading. www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/230084-frame-chassis-problem-crack-fender-well.html

Arb fridges have a low voltage setting so it wont drain your battery btw.

Nice video, but clean up that wiring a bit. It looked like the positives all joined with a big non-insulated stud in the midst of the rats nest. That makes it easy to accidentally short a wrench or screwdriver across if you're not careful. I've been running my 51L Indel-B fridge for about 6 months with a slightly oversized Group 27 battery. No solar but I added a Schumacher battery charger/maintainer in the mix so I plug in when I'm at home.

how about calling it "overland talk with Jason" or overland talk with swellrunner.. that way it doesn't matter how much time you take. Some subjects will take longer than others and that's ok.
