In this photo workshop Ange gives you a raw glimpse into the world behind the lens of an Arc’teryx photo shoot as her and ski athlete Greg Hill tackle real weather conditions to make the magic happen while on location in Rogers Pass, British Columbia.
Ange shares how to leverage the creative toolbox as an outdoor photographer covering the elements she uses daily on the job while demonstrating how to wrestle her most favorite outdoor tool of all - the power of nature - into a single frame.

Ange, could you do another video on how you go through all the shots that you took and narrow down the images that you like vs the ones that don't make the cut? This video was great, so it'd be nice to go the next step, but also the step before you start any kind of editing process.

You're really good at verbalizing your process in concrete, useful ways. Many photographic instructors are too abstract to do that. I hope you do more teaching/training in the future. Thanks.

What a great teaching tool. All good points I will take into consideration when photographing/filming outdoors. And the photos were awesome. Like others, would appreciate a talk through of how you select and process your final photos.

Thanks. Very inspirational. Especially the points about telling a story. As a landscape photographer I have always focused on getting the one shot. And though you can tell a bit of a story with just one shot, this video has me wanting to explore doing sets of 4-6 shots to tell the story. Great stuff, Ange!

I realise that this is a brand awareness video rather than a photography tutorial and it's pretty good at that. Being a photographer myself and an owner of a couple of Arc'terx jackets I guess I kind of like it. A few things that might have helped seeing that the focus here was on photography rather than the clothing. Discussing the difficulty of getting correct exposure in snow covered environments (something I personally rarely have to contend with but might be second nature to Canadian photographers). Keeping the batteries working in sub zero temperatures. Operating a small mirrorless camera with mittens on. Not using a lens hood in a snow storm. Do you use a protective filter?

Thanks, I use the same lens most of the time an a 20mm 1.8. I sold my a7iii because ,y a6400 was focusing so much better. I ended up selling it and getting a used a9. The higher frame rate helps a lot. I find I can get the moment just befor the snow covers the face. Not having it black out makes it easier to keep the subject in the frame. I did loose some dynamic range which is a big challenge but I stepped up nailing exposure with 107% zebra stripes.

What type of gloves are you wearing? Any handwarming tips and tricks. My biggest issue shooting in the backcountry is that my fingers get numb pretty fast.

You ever try wearing nitrile or latex gloves as liners? It's gross but, it eliminates evaporative cooling which is a major source of heat loss. You can pull off your actual gloves or mitts for a bit if you need to or you can wear them under belay gloves or thin liners to make them warmer w/o losing dexterity. Worked wonders on a week-long hut trip. I don't really bother except under extreme or prolonged conditions because it's kinda gross but it really works.

The last few years companies have made big strides in heated glove technology that can really help. I've tried a few brands, and enjoyed it, but am really looking forward to trying Chaval. I just have chronically cold hands, and sometimes adding heat is all you can do!

As a photographer myself I am really interested in how you stay warm and dry during your shoots. I regularly get cold feet and hands while not moving during a photo session. When I start hiking again I start sweating with all that gear on my back. I love my Arc’teryx jackets and I would be very interested about your take of a winter clothing layer system for adventure photographers!

Everyone is a little different when it comes to layering up for BC winter travel. My advice is to just go on some smaller mission to see what works best for you. Bring extra base layers, a good helly hansen or UA to wick moister and an extra fleece or puffy, extra socks and gloves never hurt either. Glove liners are great to have when shooting too so your hands aren't fully exposed when taking photos. After your first couple of smaller missions you'll find out what you need and not need and can adjust what you bring with according to what you've got planned. Also another good tip is bring a thermos of hot tea or coffee, helps boost moral too when you're in the elements all day.

Very interesting and lot's of things to take with from this, thanks for that! How much gear did she take with her? I once took my camera to a hut in the swiss alps and together with all the other gear it was so freaking heavy (yes, there was also the 60-600mm in it to shoot the capricorn which are up there which might be one of the reasons). Also recently been skitouring again and also ended up being the person with the heaviest backpack even though i haven't taken my camera with me.

Great video! There were several times I was yelling at you to stop talking to the camera, turn around and shoot the light quickly! Hah! I saw you had one hand gloved and the other mittened. Any tips and tricks for cold weather photography is appreciate. I am fine moving but the minute I stop to shoot I get too cold to think. Fun video in the beautiful elements. Thanks.
