Lyrics
They heard me singing and they told me to stop
Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock
These days, my life, I feel it has no purpose
But late at night the feelings swim to the surface
Cause on the surface the city lights shine
They're calling at me, "come and find your kind"
Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small
That we can never get away from the sprawl
Living in the sprawl
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains
And there's no end in sight
I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights
We rode our bikes to the nearest park
Sat under the swings, we kissed in the dark
You shield my eyes from the police lights
We run away, but we don't know why
Black River, your city lights shine
They're screaming at us, "we don't need your kind"
Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small
That we can never get away from the sprawl
Living in the sprawl
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains
And there's no end in sight
I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights
They heard me singing and they told me to stop
Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock
Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small
Can never get away from the sprawl?
Living in the sprawl
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains
And there's no end in sight
I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights

ive been looking for this song for 3 years, its my dads favorite song and he used to play it for me when i was a kid and we would dance around the living room. he passed away in 2018 and all ive been doing is looking for this song and i just remembered me calling it the angel song because he told mne the women singing were angels. i looked up arcade fire angel song so many times i cant count. then i remembered seeing something about mountains. i found it now and i can finally just listen to it.

The message is about getting away from city life (the sprawl) and doing things in the dark. It's about how the city is viewed as a place of anonymity, yet they always have the lights on, like someone is always watching. Its also about placing value on life's simple things

This is not just an underrated Arcade Fire song, but it's just overall the most underrated song! Everything about this song is just so beautiful: the lyrics, the message, Regine's voice, her childlike manners, the music, that killer instrumental after the second chorus... I can't think of a song more beautiful than this one!!! Although this band is really famous, they are still extremely underrated!!!

I love this album for the sheer reason that they're writing about like the *least* sexy thing a rock band could possibly write about- the SUBURBS. But they created something totally unique and new but simultaneously truly relatable, like a shared memory of a home that doesn't exsist anymore. The fleeting 70's-90's suburban American experience was shared, despite what state you lived in, anywhere across the country, "move your feet from hot pavement and into the grass". It's that childhood experience, running around barefoot between your house and the neighbors' that you could have only had back when there *was* that freshly-laid, jet-black, sun-soaked pavement of the street right up next to that lush, cool, green grassy suburban lawn, coated in water droplets from the sprinkler... before the time when parents preferred their kids to stay inside, inside the safety of their houses and before the fascination of the internet took every kid's attention away from running around outdoors. It was a very specific place in time but it was also *every* place.

So many of these shots seem taken straight from my hometown. Arcade Fire is the band of our generation. So many of us grew up resenting suburbia, or at least held/hold conflicting feelings about it, even if we didn't realize it at the time. It feels empty, mind-numbingly sterile and isolated. It feels familiar, too, of course. In cities across the American interior, hundreds of thousands of Millennials have been trying to rebuild their urban cores and return to the communities and values that the 1980's destroyed. I hope we can find a way to cope with the all the destruction and decay.

This album was the soundtrack to my senior year! Back when I lived in endless desert sprawl of Phoenix, Arizona. The housing bubble/recession stalled many neighborhoods so my friends and I would always smoke weed in the half-built homes 🤣 There was nothing to do and I couldn’t wait to leave for the city. Since I arrived in Canada 6 years ago, there was a very vague, unique and empty feeling I developed by walking neighborhoods and shopping malls. I was warm though, I had just heard my new favorite Cyndi Lauper song come over the air on my pocket radio. I went on to have one of the best days of my life. That was in 1983. This song took me back to that day better than the DeLorean in BTTF ever could have. This young lady has an old soul, and it's glowing brighter than the Sun. This is pure genius, you know that right?

Well their music also says, "Someone please shut the lights." or "Feel like I've been living in a city with no children.." or "Then I'll dig a tunnel from my window to yours" or "I don't want to live in America no more." or "They're screaming at me, come and find your kind" (Talking about street lights) So it was very very relevant.

So much of their songs have such relevant subject matter. Assuming this song is about urban sprawl. Something that has shaped the face of American, and other western cultures the world over. By increasing the reliance on automobiles. And creating widespread light pollution stretching for miles. (I need the darkness someone please cut the lights) Such a great album

They heard me singing and they told me to stop, Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock, These days, my life, I feel it has no purpose, But late at night the feelings swim to the surface. 'Cause on the suburbs the city lights shine, They're calling at me, 'come and find your kind.' Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small, Then we can never get away from the sprawl, Living in the sprawl, Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains, And there's no end in sight, I need the darkness someone please cut the lights. We rode our bikes to the nearest park, Sat under the swings, we kissed in the dark, We shield our eyes from the police lights, We run away, but we don't know why, And like a mirror these city lights shine, They're screaming at us, 'we don't need your kind' Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small, Then we can never get away from the sprawl, Living in the sprawl, Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains, And there's no end in sight, I need the darkness someone please cut the lights. They heard me singing and they told me to stop, Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock. Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small, Can we ever get away from the sprawl? Living in the sprawl, Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains, And there's no end in sight, I need the darkness someone please cut the lights.

Another amazing Montreal creation!... Cirque de Soleil and Arcade Fire are two of the best representations of what makes Montreal so so uniquely special! If you haven't been there before I suggest that you go... and if you don't speak any French then don't worry because everyone there speaks English and is super friendly! It has a Europeanish feel to it (if I had to think of a made up word to describe it, especially old Montreal, beautiful!) In 2008 I spent a couple weeks there, stayed in a quaint, clean and 200+ year old hotel for $60/night just off St. Catherine's street & a 5 minute walk to Downtown and old Montreal... Even in Calgary at that time you couldn't find a comprable hotel room for less than $150 & an average room was just over $200 per night then. This is the thoughts of a Calgarian.

The use of Paper in this video is such an artful metaphor. And seeing Regine break through it in a red Pheonix dress with those peg leg shoes is absolutely freeing to the soul. ...god, I love everyone on this page. You are my people! Not because you like this song, but because you've got some depth. The best part of this song for me is @ 2:59 to 3:14, which is basically a "whoaa, what's happening? sh#% is going sideways" moment, moving into 3:15 where Regine catches the beat and flips the whole song in a different direction. I love the little smile that comes across her face at 3:14/3:15 (she's like, watch, I got this ya'll). It very much seems the cathartic break in the song. Beautiful independence breaks out at that point. Also cheers to the little rebel @ 2:04, breaking sync with the group.

Used to live near Sproul Rd in the suburbs west of Philadelphia. This video could have been shot along Sproul Rd, or I suppose any similar Sproul-like sprawling neighborhood across our great nation. Love the concrete. Love the parking lots. Love the abandoned shopping malls. The underutilized sports fields. Rain on the bicycle. The singer reminds me exactly of one of moms from our little circle of friends: cheerful anxiety. This song makes perfect sense.

This song inspired my d&d campaign of adventurers travelling to unexplored areas of a continent after natural disasters wiped out all records and technology, it's not just about slaying monsters and dungeons, but learning about the world, appreciating nature, and creating a safe place for us all.
