Bowie and Byrne at an early Arcade Fire show is just the coolest thing ever. They NEVER stopped looking for new influences to add to their music!
@eltravos99
@eltravos99 2 жыл бұрын
I would have to dig it up again. But David Bowie said he was watching Arcade Fire at that show. And David Byrne was nearby. Bowie went out and convinced Byrne to come see the show. He was like "You have to see this band, they are incredible" or something like that. And Byrne got there in time to watch them perform Wake Up. I probably got that story so wrong but that's what I remember back in the day in like 2005. I'm going to try to find that story again. Yeah, but that is incredible that both of them were at their first headlining show. And both of those guys are huge influences on their music and singing and all that.

That's how I discovered AF: I read a review of the legendary concert in CMJ (defunct College Music Journal). I can't find it archived anywhere. The earliest review still online is from Oct. '04, a month before the Bowery show, in Gothamist (a site about NYC happenings). It even mentions _"the Bowery show is sold out,"_ and it would be the last time people would see them in such an intimate venue.

There was always something magical and special about the era surrounding the release of the Suburbs, cant say i felt it about them before or since, but they really tapped into something there - i consider it a masterwork, and it was released kind of at the zenith of the indie rock movement,

Win actually seems a lot happier now. Seems like his marriage and becoming a father has really brought him a lot of joy. If you go back to older interviews, Win would often come off as more cold as he seemed to always be in his own head. Now he seems beaming with color and warmth, and just seems more open. Happy for him.

Win Butler's interviews for Arcade Fire are always my favourite. When he said that artists need to have an antena connected to both the past and the future at the same time, yeah..... There is always such a delicacy and simplicity in the way he says things that make them so true and so essential. Arcade Fire remains as my favourite band ever because they just know, they just get what the human soul is about, and then they make it in the form of a song.

I liked this guy the more I listened to him (Win). I must admit that the music I've so far heard coming from Arcade Fire doesn't do much for me, but we all know that music has the power to suddenly convert a listener via a fresh listen wether that be through a new experience brought to the listener , or a song they hadn't heard before. But when I heard Win say he "hated the governor of Texas" my ears immediately pricked up because, unfortunately, hate of a greedy , privileged, legislator/lawyer, is something I can sympathise with. And there I realised this guy has some passion I can relate to. Now he has my attention!

Win had great insight in 2007, not so much 15 years later. Thought the new album was great, but I do think he's out of touch with the real anxieties of the age. Surveillance and loss of freedom was huge in neon Bible, you'd think he'd carry that into 2022, but I guess COVID is the worst thing in the world and we should all be afraid. He's a weaker person that we thought. Love the band and the new album, but their vague critique of culture doesn't hit for me anymore.
