This is one of those rare games where I didn’t mind the lagging that went on because it made it easier to see the bullets and stuff flying at you
@MrSprattibaggs Жыл бұрын
As someone who grew up playing this on the NES, I had no idea the storyline was so different for the arcade. In the NES, you’re trying to destroy a giant, planet-devouring serpent from the inside. But the arcade takes more of a “Fantastic Voyage” route, where you’re actually shrunken down and trying to save their life. The name makes more sense in that case. That said, I can now see how good the NES port really was. The music and graphics translated beautifully to the 8-bit console version.

The Famicom version is a slightly better port, in my opinion, because it shows you all of the names of the power-ups, just like in for example "Gradius 3". This is a lot more convenient than only seeing one name at a time.

What an imaginative concept- being in a body, but it a half human half robot. And you’re the treatment? But the body is seeing you as a threat… weird. But innovative.
@DrewDracoSune9 жыл бұрын
I find it very odd how the actual Life Force/Salamander game both the japanese Arcade version and the NES port actually has space-ish backgrounds and enviorment, while the US arcade variant here has everything inside somebody's body! Like the Vic Viper was shrunk down and you're attacking tumors and battling through kidney stones and such? I mean it should've been called: "Body Wars" or something. Not to mention this person you're fighting inside, if he has kidney stones, a raging inferno in his stomach, he must be in a humongous amount of pain or something!
@Laserbryte7 жыл бұрын
Salamander's plot is pretty much a repeat of Gradius, except that the bad guy is a sentient fortress planet named well.. Salamander. It's not clear *why* exactly it's called Salamander, though it presumably has something to do with the game's love of fire/dragon imagery. I guess. Maybe it came out of a star. You are not, however, inside of anyone's body for most of the game. Even then Stage 1 is probably just a generic Gradius cellular level. Life Force on the other hand just took stage 1's cellular theme and ran with it, making up a crazy BS story about you saving a biomechanical soldier hero dude. ...though if some of his anti-biotics are people in ships, why hasn't anyone just told them "it's Vic Viper/USS Light-Speed (the f***) idiots, don't shoot"? Dammit Konami your laziness is getting people killed!! not even gonna get into the Japanese Life Force...
@garyhobbesworth9416 жыл бұрын
They probably also shouldn't have made that thing you're flying out of (its brain?) explode too. Kind of seems like that defeats the whole purpose of destroying that giant tumor a minute earlier.

When I used to play this in the arcades it was called Salamander and it didn't have as much speech in it. There was no mention of being inside a body at all. The only speech was the power up part. I found the amount of speech in this to be somewhat intrusive to the game, and it seemed to take some of the challenge from it. There were no hints about the flame eruptions or how to kill the bosses in the version I used to play. This was another game (like Nemesis) that I used to be able to loop several times. After several loops, 6 or 7 I think, even the power ups used the shoot at you!

I couldn't say without trying it, but while having four options for five times the firepower would be advantageous through volume, the game obviously can't actually handle the player blasting out 5x lasers and missiles at all times. I can only assume that it becomes a total slideshow if you're playing with a pal and you both get full options, blasting with reckless abandon. It'd be interesting to see a game like this overclocked or something, so you can see it without slowdown, but there's points where it looks like the player is meant exploit the slowdown in the face of massive enemy projectile spam, and that you wouldn't be able to react fast enough otherwise.
