Arcane's ability of writing immaculate scenes has blown me away, Viktors Run is one such scene. While there are many to choose from, I truly believe this is arcane's perfect 40 seconds.

I was very hesitant about Arcane. I don't watch a lot of anime or animation in general (mostly because I'm a camera nerd and what I enjoy the most in cinema are the techniques used to create the images we see), last animation stuff that got me really into it was Spiderverse. On top of that, I don't really like League, I know it has a complex lore and stuff, but the overall cartoon-ish appearance of the game always kept me away from learning mre about the characters. When they announced a Netflix animated show, I was like "uuuh really? that's gonna suck". When act 1 came out, I ignored it, had otehrs things to do bla bla bla. When my Twitter timeline freaked out about it for a whole week, I was like... okay let's give it a try. It won me over in the first 30 seconds of the first episode. That introduction sequence has EVERYTHING : storytelling, killing visuals (no pun intended) powerful music and it introduces you to the world without a line of dialogue besides Powder singing in the begenning. My favourite scene (at least one of them, there's so many) is probably Silco's speech to Vander's statue in ep. 9. That scene is like 50 seconds long but it is such a payoff to Silco's character, how he comes to realize what Vander's went through in episode 2 and 3. And the sound track was amazing too. There is so much good in Arcane that I could be there writing about all the stuff I like in this show for days, if not weeks

Arcane is really something special. And what's more is its reaching audiences that animation has never reached. Thanks for your comment my guy it was a super enjoyable read. That scene is also one of my favorites and I'm planning on breaking down in a Silco character focus thing...As well as talking about visual storytelling. (Which is coming out tomorrow as of me writing this comment) Fun fact about that scene. I'm 99% sure that the line that made it into the final cut. "Is there anything more undoing than a daughter." Is actually an add lib from Jason Spisak. As the background track is titled. "Is there anything more enduring and a daughter."

As a disabled person, with a very similar disability to Viktor's, the running scene struck me right where it hurts. It felt like those moments when you feel a little bit better, when the pain is less excruciating, when you feel you can almost do everything... And it leaves you wanting more, more to the point you'll do anything to get there. That scream, that catharsis, Holly shit yeah! I have been there, countless times, and i'll know I'll be there again countless more. And it was portrayed so beautifully painful... It was so real. I think it's again one of those subtle story telling things that you register, but don't focus on. It's a way of telling the audience that he's declining without pointless dialog on his health. I could write a video on how much nonverbal storytelling there is in this show......I think I will

I genuinely had to take a moment to appreciate the attention to detail this show gave to it's storytelling, and how to visualize it to the audience. I love to see the growth of a characters appearance along with the storyline, but it's something we usually see in a more obvious manner, like a big scar across someone's, or dramatic hairstyle change ( making it longer to alude to time passing, or it being cut short on some dramatic change or event ), and mostly relating to a big moment, rather than a more drawn out and slow change during the narrative. It's a shame we don't see that much, but it's understandable, since these things cost budget and time that well, most don't have in hand. But it's sure satisfying to see ( sorry for the big text I'm very passionate about this sort of thing lol )

@@AFlyingWalrus I'd be down to see a video from you about the masterful subtle and nonverbal storytelling in Arcane. Hell, I think the Ekko vs Jinx fight was a masterclass in nonverbal and visual storytelling. ________ Time for the visual breakdown of the Ekko vs Jinx fight that nobody asked for. In the games' lore, Ekko is known for his ability to rewind time thanks to his Hextech invention, the Z-Drive. With that, he can rewind time to twist any situation to his advantage. But this fight scene in Arcane happens quite a bit before the invention of the Z-Drive. It's something that he'll probably be able to invent with the help of Heimerdinger in the next few Seasons but it's not possible in the present. That was the Easter Egg reference section of the whole fight scene. Then we focus on the whole psychological warfare, the mind games, aspect of the fight scene. Ekko bringing out that pocket watch and playing with it in that specific way in front of Jinx was to purposely make her remember the times that they played a game back when they were kids. With that mental frame inserted into Jinx's mind, Ekko uses his incredible memory and visualization skills (along with a very good internal clock) to chart out Powder's shooting pattern from years ago, figure out where he had messed up years ago, and then counter that. When Ekko clicks on his pocket watch, that's when we see him execute this method of attack. Basically, if you've watched the Guy Ritchie directed Sherlock Holmes films starring Roberty Downey Jr, it's basically the Mental Discombobulate Fight scene. Same principle with a few differences added into it. (There's also the symbolism of the Firelight behind Young Ekko and the Crow/Raven behind Young Powder). It's an incredible way of referencing Ekko's Z-Drive ability to rewind time in a way that makes sense by having Ekko play a mind game on Jinx to make her revert to the mental frame that he wants her to be in and which communicates quite a lot of the history between Ekko and Powder using just visual imagery and an understanding of the lore. I guess you could say that just like Viktor, Ekko was on that Sigma Male Hextech Grindset and he held frame. __________ Feel free to use whatever I've said in your videos, I don't mind at all. Keep up the good work, Flying Walrus.

As someone with who couldn't properly run until this year at 22 years old this scene hit me so hard. I was born with a series of bone deformities in my legs and movement has always been awkward and painful. This year I had 2 major surgeries to break and reset my bones into the right place. Its impossible to describe the emotion of experiencing a normal body for the first time as an adult. The feeling learning to walk and run in a way you never have been able to before. I feel like a lot of people will understand Viktor's journey from the perspective of recovering from an injury as that is more common. But when its something you are born with you have no reference of what it is like to walk without pain or for the mechanics of you body to offer no resistance. I yelled too when I ran for the first time months after surgery. It was joy, amazement, but mostly grief. Cause I finally knew what I had been missing out on my whole life. I think I lot of people miss that layer to Viktor's emotion if you haven't experienced it before.

Glad to see someone talking about this scene. A lot of Arcane's characters surprised me, but something about Viktor and this moment in particular really stuck with me. Like a lot of people, I thought they were setting up how he's being overshadowed by Jayce as Piltover's golden boy, but it goes so much deeper than expected. He doesn't care about the wealth or glory. He's a man trying to push the fast-forward button on scientific progress, not just because he's wrestling with his own mortality, but because his ailments are a reflection of the suffering that goes on in the undercity every single day that they aren't doing something to change it. And when they're so close to a breakthrough, he has the rug pulled out from under him, telling him that time is almost up. It changes perspective on everything, making Heimerdinger's well-intentioned words about waiting decades for safety and protocol seem cruel and out-of-touch, while Singe's extreme measures to preserve life no matter the cost start to make more and more sense. It's all capped off with Viktor's run in the rain. No words, not even a smile or look of disbelief. Just a crescendo of music and a cry of exertion as he's able to leave his crutch behind, and truly run for the first time in his life.

Heimerdinger's well intentions and ignorance just turning into plain cruelty and one of the biggest reasons why the undercity is the way it is, was so well-crafted. Like, he genuinely reminds of real politicians who aren't corrupt but have lived such a priviliged life they don't understand they're not even doing the bare minimum and how it causes people to suffer. Where's the public schooling in the undercity? Right up his ally, and unlike the corrupt or the other ignorant but well-intentioned council members, he actually founded the city and has had centuries to implement these ideas, but he didn't. Imagine how much better the undercity would be if it had education. Imagine if the enrollment requirements of his own Academy was lower, because as far as evidence shows, only one person from Zaun each generation actually gets a chance to go there, and Jayce needed Caitlyn's mom to vouch for him because he came from a family that was like lower middle class from Piltover. After elementary school, kids generally are already sent to schools that fit their intelligence, talents and thus inevitably their future career the most. Powder is 11 in Act 1, and the perfect age for discussing these directions. She and Ekko are both talented enough to have enrolled Heimerdinger's Academy. If things had been different, Powder's name might already have been familiar at Piltover for her talent. If things still had turnt out the way it did, it would have only opened Heimerdinger and the rest of the council's eyes even further, because the person stealing and building weaponry against them would be a human they failed, not a monster created by circumstances they can pretend they haven't caused. Paired with being immortal and thus not understanding things like Viktor's fear of dying, makes Heimerdinger unable to create a good society for humans. He doesn't understand what we need, and it was only after he got sacked and met Ekko, someone bright enough to have attended the Academy but never would due to the circumstances Heimderdinger helped create, that Heimerdinger looked like he finally started to understand a few of the points people have been trying to make to him for years, if not centuries.

I read Viktor's downfall a bit different, I guess? Or maybe just saw more to it than a desperate grasp for survival. We have seen Viktor focused solely and entirely on helping people, specifically his own people who he knows are constantly suffering. Except, slowly, the one person he believed was just as dedicated to this as him, starts to drift away to other things, towards more suffering. Then Viktor realizes he's dying. If he's gone, then will there really be anyone striving to help the people of the undercity? If you have dedicated your entire life to making a positive change for the world, a change it seems no one else thinking of, and then realize you ARE going to die and soon, what do you do? Do you waste time testing something that could heal people on plants and maybe small animals? Or do you think to yourself 'I'm dying anyways,' and become your own lab rat? Not only is there a possibility of pushing his own mortal deadline back even if a little to have more time to work, but he could make major discoveries of what the Hexcore can do for people like him, who are sick, who are dying. His leg was just the first test. After all, it likely wasn't related to his illness. He needed to see what the Hexcore would do, what it would change, how it would work. And a bum leg seems like a good place to start. I do believe that survival was part of his motivation, but I believe it was his need to find a way to help people no matter the cost that was his main drive. It's just that he thought that cost would only be to himself. The moment someone else had to pay for his progress, he knew it was over. Nothing is worth sacrificing others.

Plus in the lore they never were friends, but in arcane its very smart that they had a bond, cause their clash will feel much more impactful later.

I'm chronically ill and disabled so seeing him transform and run was a triumph but the fall after, the pain, the struggle, it's too close to me. I'll get a couple days of feeling ok and then, out of nowhere, crash, pain through the roof, unable to move or sleep. It's a constant reminder that you're sick, that you're different, an outcast from society (especially portrayed in RL with the CDC comment about chronically ill/disabled deaths being 'encouraging'.) Unlike Viktor, I have the disabled community to lean back on when I feel alone but the private struggle is an every second of the day thing. Also would like to note, the use of a mobility aid (cane and crutch) shows a realistic portrayal that few non-disabled people actually understand. Many disabled and chronically ill people use mobility aids however, that use is not a permanent, every second thing. Like I said before, you have good days and bad days, and it's based on actions and events for the day too. Going shopping and having a flair up? Wheelchair day. Doing ok and staying home? Maybe a cane or nothing needed that day. The media also doesn't help the situation with their "miraculously recovered" portrayals either. This leads to disinformation, discrimination, people policing, and even violence. Yes, I've seen disabled people post that random strangers questioning if they are REALLY disabled, do you REALLY need that wheelchair, don't they have SPECIAL buses for YOU people, I just saw you stand up so you MUST BE FAKING, you're TOO YOUNG TO BE SICK and even physical violence. PLEASE DON'T DO THIS! It creates fear among the disabled that they'll be attacked leading to some not using mobility aids and suffering in silence. Please be respectful, you don't deserve or need to know why I have a cane today, what my diagnosis is, did I try X or Y treatment, etc. Just let me live my life in peace. Thank you if you read my comment this far. Means a lot of me. Stay safe!

Viktor was the character I looked forward to when watching Arcane. He didn't have the charisma, wasn't highly regarded, had to limp, had a terminal illness, went through tragedies and all odds were against him. Yet despite all this, he was humble, determined and was willing to lose it all after the tragic incident with Sky getting obliterated. He mourned for her life even though he was running out of time and this close to having a brand new transformation. I would say Viktor was 80% sad most of the time but kept himself occupied with determination and 20% elated when there was a milestone breakthrough. His run in those 40 seconds is the reason life is worth fighting for. Life can be shit, absolutely horrible and just downright cruel to the point it may not seem worth living and bearing any longer. That is until you experience the equalizer, whatever it may be in your life. It could be a lead up to a succession of events or it may just one moment in that payload of trials and tribulations.Viktor was broken, was good as dead and was never a leader, but he inspired me and respect enough to carve out some time to write this past midnight. Here's to you, Viktor and everyone going through their own struggles. Don't give up. Cheers.

Thank you so much for this video. Viktor is instantly my favourite character, due to many reasons but the main one being, how we have a character whose life is constant with chronic pain/illness and has a disability. As someone who struggles with 3 chronic illnesses and a newfound disability, it is hard to find good representation & characters who experience the same or similar kind of pain/diagnostic. I adore Fortiche and how they developed Viktor throughout the show, we are first introduced to Viktor as a scientist, someone who is ambitious and passionate of wanting to do good. We see Viktor. A man with dreams and goals. His disability didn’t define him. Rather than letting this get in his way, letting it be who he is…it will always be a part of him; but never who he actually is. Viktor exists beyond being a physically disabled character and continues to show that as the series progresses. I love that. As an artist, it spoke to me on so many levels how he insists to keep working, to keep going and pursue his grind for knowledge. I connected heavily with him, as I too work and keep drawing, no matter the time, no matter if I am in pain or sick; I never seem to stop. Most of my teenage years have been lost to hospital visits, doctors, pain, depression and anxiety. Seeing Viktor in that hospital bed gave me literal ptsd flashbacks of when I have been hospitalized for many reasons. I remember only glimpses and pieces but that’s because my brain didn’t want me to remember…it was too painful. As I watched Viktor ask Jayce how much time he had left; I broke down and sobbed. I had to pause and just let it all out. I remember my cousin asked if I watched Arcane recently and she asked who my favourite character was. I instantly said Viktor, I watched as her face paused and crunched up in puzzlement. She asked, “Why though?” And I replied, “I could give you a whole lecture and PowerPoint as to why he is my favourite and why he should have much more recognition - because this man deserves the best.” Truly, I love his personality. He is sassy, witty, funny, lighthearted, strong minded, ambitious, passionate, can be a bit too focused on work and dismiss others help (which I do sometimes as well) but his flaws is what also makes me love him. He isn’t a one dimensional character, he has such deep and guttural lines/quotes and his character design is so satisfying and lovely to marvel at. I don’t think I’ll ever shut up about Viktor, I am so happy he is getting the recognition and love that he deserves. Thank you for talking about him and his scenes. The boat scene broke me and put the pieces back together again. I connected the scenes of younger Viktor and him during the scene it as I watched him - I bawled my eyes out because I’d give anything to feel what he felt in that moment. Then I realised, I did…I honestly did. I felt his agony, his desperation, his vulnerability, his anger and triumph. But triumph?? I haven’t yet relate to it but this…this gave me hope that I might one day. Which is why Fortiche and the Voice Actor for Viktor are truly passionate and remarkable at their craft. I apologise for such a long comment but I am glad I am able to write it here. Thank you once again for this amazing video; you nailed it. I also love the funny bits and editing you incorporated here to let us have a breather or feel lighter. I appreciate that a lot. I am hopeful to see you touch upon the scene you talked about in this video, I do believe it needs a separate video in itself. It’s perfect. Hope you’re all staying safe!! 💜☺️

It was gut wrenching for me to watch his story and see parallels in things to my own life. My greatest fear is to not have Done anything, left an impact on anyone. That when I'm gone, that's it. @@AFlyingWalrus Thank you for your reassurance, I appreciate it a lot. Whenever I do this; writing in such detail or huge paragraphs - I’m usually met with TLDR. I am truly honoured you say it was a wonderful read. ☺️ I’m saddened yet happy in a way that we can relate to Viktor - it makes me feel not so alone. The parallels that we see in our own lives from his story is tragically bittersweet. I can understand that. I also find comfort in the fact everyone has a different unique story to relate to with Viktor, it’s never the same and how his story touches everyone with their own struggles. Yes!! I think I kinda forgot to mention that or make it clear in my comment on leaving impacts on others lives, to live in others memories so you’re not forgotten; nor has your hard work been for nought. To leave behind a legacy, the fear of not being able to; it’s scary and daunting. Because of this video alone, I can reassure you on my part that it will stay in my memory. Completely agree with everything you said. There are so many small details that are hard to understand if we are not 100% involved into the show, taking in every subtle facial change or emotions and even actions. Like many never noticed or paid attention to what really happened in the scene where Sky died but it is all there for us to see. Viktor desperate to continue his augmentation now that he knows it works, realizes he consumed all the shimmer he had (that is the energy that helped him with the mutation) but continues to go on nonetheless consumed by power, Sky comes in while the hexcore is trying to consume Viktor's energy because that's the only one available and then Sky comes into contact with it and is completely disintegrated and the energy she provided will only be enough to augment one of his hands.

He's not consumed with "power". He just doesn't fucking want to die. And he also doesn't want to suffer needlessly. Nobody does. He's trying to save his own life...not "accrue power". He doesn't give a goddamn about power beyond whether or not it can spare him from his terminal illness. He's so desperate that he's willing to risk the Hexcore eating him in the slim hope that he'll survive it whole, somehow.

I agree with what @Dilios Spartanetz said. It's not he was all comsumed with a rage for power. It's that he was so desperate that he lost his way. During the scene with him running, that little look like 'well, here goes nothing' and then the pure, raw scream of finally -- finally being able to run, I think we've all felt that before, all the frustration and anger coming out. I grew up sick like Viktor, and after I was finally diagnosed I gained the ability to actually do cardio. I started cycling, then running, then the damage from all of those years caught up to me and I had to have my hip replaced at 26. It took 3 years after that before I completed my first marathon, the Boston Marathon. 5 marathons later, I was supposed to run in Tokyo in 2020, obviously canceled for non-elite runners. Last October new damage was found in my spine which has robbed me of running again, but hopefully I can get back before Tokyo 2023. This scene meant so much to me because I was so focused on his emotions and the feeling. It's the same feelings I've had and it made me reconsider Viktor on a whole new level. I utterly loved it... When I was 6 years old, my father brutally lost control of his legs (his spine nerve burst) and all at once everything came falling down. The family, his job, our future, etc. He was bound to a wheelchair, going trough re-education and was told he could never walk again. He lost hope and fell into depression. But through practice and help from amazing doctors he slowly learned to walk again. I can tell you, the moment he came up to us, walking step by step, he was crying in our arms. I never saw him cry like this before. It just meant so much to him, because being able to walk again means you get so much freedom back. This was a very heartfelt video. By the way; Viktor is right behind Heimerdinger as my favourite character and it brings me great cheer to see you do the man justice. I'm sorry to hear that your sick and I wish you a quick recovery. Hopefully one that doesn't involve losing your assistant/secret admirer in a Hextech-Shimmer combo.

I actually still remember what made me love Viktor and it was way before any of this emotionally charged stuff happened. Back when he first showed up I thought he was just going to be a snob but when he came around and stopped Jayce from killing himself and opened up about being a cripple from the undercity I could already tell he must have worked so damn hard all his life to get where he is now and yet here he is risking everything to talk down a guy he never met because he believed in him, and was willing to offer the help he'd probably never got. That scene made me like him, heck it made me like both of them, but the scene that made me love him was when they were discovered trying to break into the lab and Viktor's response was 'Wait this isn't my door' I don't know why that got to me so much but it was just so effortlessly funny, he was immediately my favorite (tied with Vi at first but later Silco) After that single scene with such a silly not that funny joke I was looking forward to the next time we'd see him every time we left one of his scenes and boy did he do wonders with his limited time. Very meta, in a way. He was never going to be around for long but he stood out so much brighter than even the golden boy... Sad, he never got his love interest Sky or to actually see any good come from his hextech work in the undercity...

Well, I've worked on Arcane for more than two years, and still haven't seen any episode yet except the pilot while in production, but your video may have given me the itch to finally sit down and watch the whole of it. Congrats !

I cry every time I see that scene, I even cried watching this. You sound really deeply affected by his story and THAT is what Arcane does so well. Even in this fantastical world, everything is just so human, so similar to what we go through on smaller scales every day

Thank you for this video. Arcane is such an inspiration. I've been spending my days feeling like there's no one else to whom Arcane has impacted as much as me, but I can see I'm not alone. This video itself was very touching. Thank you!

I was really skeptical about Arcane at first because i'm not a fan of league but I saw everyone freaking about it so i decided to check it out, just the opening scene had me interested so much, it was just so appealing in every way possible. I love how they wrote all the characters, Jinx to me personally is really relatable, she's not just some crazy character for no reason who goes around doing random things, she has a really deep story and I love the way they present her breakdowns, she's not just beautifully crying, she's full on breaking down and just the way she reacts to stuff and trauma itself is relatable to me. Arcane is truly an amazing show, it's so beautiful its terms of music, expositions, emotions and just everything. I'm really looking forward to more of Arcane

you summed it up quite well! viktor is my absolute favorite here, he is written so goddamned well. and you did it, the small quiet moments in this show hit so hard. all of the mannerisms the characters demonstrate have many things to say. they hit harder for me than the action scenes :)

I'm chronically ill and disabled, and without going into all the details, I'll probably never be able to walk with a normal gait again, even if I get off crutches, and I certainly won't be able to jog or run again. Every illness and injury hits so much harder than it does for other people, and I never fully recover from anything anymore. Like Viktor, I feel like I'm in decay, slow but inevitable, every time a new medical emergency knocks me down again. Let's just say the running-on-the-docks scene brought me close to tears.

One of my favorite things is that in Arcane they animate the whole face while talking not just the mouth with an occasional blink. They do the mouth, the lips, the cheeps, eyes, eyebrows, jaw, the skin flexes and is pulled tight, it gets bunched together, it just looks human. They didnt take the cheap way out at any part when making a person move or something to function, it all flows extremely well. The VA are great and they fit the emotions of the characters they portray amazingly. One of - if not - the best shows I have ever watched!

I am glad someone talked about this scene, since I believe it's one of the most beautiful yet underrated scenes. When I asked my friends what scene or character they liked the most, it was always a scene including Jinx, RARELY Vi or Caitlyn or Mesmeralda (idk what's she called). When I told them my favorite scenes were with Viktor and Jayce and then mentioned Viktor's running scene, they took a long thought before recalling that scene after mentioning the smex scene between Mel and Jayce lmao. What I wanted to say is: Thank you for making a video about this scene, thank you for describing the details and thank you for appreciating Viktor.
