Can we just remember that Vi is only 2 years older than Jinx. I feel like there is animosity towards Vi that she didn't handle things properly, but also like again... She is ONLY 2 years older than Jinx. Vi is just as much a child as Jinx is, and is going thru many of the exact same pains that Jinx was.

her actions r still her responsibility. obviously she was traumatized and there is a reason she's the way she was in the scene. she's know violence her entire life, but that doesn't make it better. she still traumatized her sister and she does deserve to be held accountable.

To me, Vi is an absolute hero. And she got it even worse than Jinx
@mechtime

It's the adults who put children in this hellish situation who deserve the bulk of the blame. Yes, Vi's actions broke Powder and made Jinx (in the context of all that happened - things could have gone differently if Marcus hadn't been there, if Silco hadn't come, etc). But Vi was broken in her own way by the deaths of her family (family #2) and the knowledge that her own sister was responsible. At her age, it's insane she even came back from it. And she collected herself in the moment and was going to go back to be there for Powder, but fate had other things to say. It's a tragedy, where each character (including Powder) had fatal weaknesses that were hammered by tragic circumstance. But again, these were children, already deeply traumatized children, whose trauma came from the actions of adults. I only see Vi and Powder as victims here who in their own ways heroically rose above it and were buried beneath it.

Hard disagree. Vi was supportive of Powder up until the moment Powder became an inconvenience for her(And yes, killing Mylo and Claggor was wrong but that wasn`t Powder`s intention, as she said repeatedly she was only trying to help and save her big sis from Monster Deckard and she did.)She knew Powder was insecure, yet she didn`t defend her from Mylo`s attacks when Powder was in earshot.

Throughout Arcane and League of Legends, Vi never bothers to see those she`s fighting(Even when they`re her own flesh and blood) as anything other than criminals and inferiors. How is Powder ,an already traumatized child with deep-seated abandonment and insecure attachment issues, magically supposed to develop cognitive empathy and self-control if her own big sister whom she once admired and depended on never modeled that for her? It was never going to happen!In other words, Vi is no different in her mindset than a female version of the stuck-up Topsiders and Enforcers she once resented like Marcus and her own parents` killers!

I personally think that Jinx wasn't trying to protect Vi or harm Silco. Or that the moment she shot Silco was a moment where she was choosing Vi over him. I believe that she just reacted to the sound of a gun pin clicking. We've already seen with the crow that when she hears a noise, she will immediately react to it. Draw her weapon, aim at the potential threat, and asses it; before choosing a course of action. But that was when her mind was clear. With everything going on she skipped those steps and just reacted. Remove the threat. Vi was lucky that she wasn't killed too. Jinx did a sweep of the entire table, all the demons in her mind were "seated" there, and she heard a gun safety pin clicking at one end. She didn't start with that end of the table, the end with the threat, she ended on it, destroying everything else in the path. Unintentionally shooting at Vi and Silco, and unintentionally missing Vi, because Vi was looking at Jinx, and had the time to dodge. Silco was looking at Vi, not giving him the same amount of time to try to dodge too. Jinx wanted the pain to stop and reacted when she heard a threat. Vi was able to dodge, ducking below the sweeping gunfire. Silco was not. Also, as a side note. I have no animosity towards Vi, I, in fact love her character, and the dynamics that she has with Jinx, and I really hope that one day they can somehow manage to bridge the gap, and that Vi can accept that Powder is gone, and if she wants her sister, that she is going to have to accept Jinx, and not try to make her be Powder again, but move forward together. (Also, I'm not saying that she needs to accept Jinx's affinity for violence, and disregard of the pain she causes others, but that she can't go back to being Powder, and that by trying to make her do so, is just causing her pain) This was just how I interpreted the end of the tea party scene, I didn't feel any "choosing" aspects or protective aspects. Just a desperate reaction to protect herself.

Interesting note. In the beginning, Vi tells Powder to remember what she told her when it was time to jump across the roof gap. Basically, "you're brave and capable" and that's what Powder became to make the leap. This returns at the close of Act 1, when Vi calls her a jinx, and that's who she becomes.
@fionn2220

Important too that in a literal sense, the interaction goes "What did I tell you?" "That....im ready." and then at the beginning of episode 3 when powder wants to come save vander vi tells her bluntly, if justifiably, "You're not ready." and this clearly hits her hard. She bases her self worth and identity around what her family figures expect her to be the whole way through its one of my favorite aspects of her character.

I think those 2 seconds are the saddest part of this whole scene. I think she is actually hoping that Vi says something, anything to make her stop. She shot Silco to protect Vi (I do believe that was intentional dictated by her subconscious, not a random accident), and throughout the dinner scene she keeps doing thing looking for Vi's reaction. When she raises her gun against Cait, she doesn't fire, although she could easily have shot Cait before Cait reacted with that minigun, but she didn't because she knew that would hurt Vi. She ultimately wants Vi to accept her for who she is, but Vi never gets there. That last look is a look of sadness, disappointment and resentment.

The fact that you can even SAY this much about the intricacies of just 1 character in a show speaks volumes about how well written it was. Season 2 will have a hard time living up to how amazing season 1 was (given how much more time was put into season 1) but I'm still so excited for it. I feel like even Arcane at its worst is going to be leaps better than other shows at their best.

to be fair about the time difference for s1 and s2 a large portion of the 6 year dev time was probably pre-production and purely about getting the aestetic and style down. (as well as annoying Bureaucracy from some rando higher-ups at riot) i would guess the pre-pro and Aestetic was probably at least 2 years of the time and from what i heard there was a 2 year hiatus where no work was done so its more like 2 years of pre-pro and 2 years of storyboarding and fully animating and geting the music and stuff

1:43:20-1:45:02 You've either got personal experience in this area, worked with a lot of people who have or spent a lot of time doing your homework. Everyone who does combat sports (e.g boxing, MMA etc) professionally will say the same thing, namely if you have to think about what you want to do in the middle of a fight you're already behind the ball. And as for shooting on a range vs a battlefield you are right on the money with that as well. (Story time) When I was in basic we had this guy who practically grew up with a rifle in his hands, damn near never missed and was overly smug about it. So our sergeant an old veteran issued him a challenge in the form of a 1 on 1 competition, an hour long PT session followed up by a round of shooting. By the end of it Mr Smug's groups were so horrible that he would've been better off using a shotgun while our sergeant's was still fairly consistent. He pointed towards Mr Smug's target and said something that I'll never forget "that is what happens to your accuracy when bullets start flying back at you and the adrenaline hits. That is why we train you"

I think that the perfect way to describe her arc is: "A victim of a series of REALLY unfortunate circumstances". Anyway, my least favourite Arcane character is Heimerdinger. I understand that he has PTSD towards magic, and that sometimes you need to be careful to things you don't understand. Howerer, as Jayce points out, humans don't have the luxury of centuries old lifespans, and people would eventually grow tired of empty promises and small talks, and demand actual facts. Plus, his own passivity is the reason why he was blind to the corruption of both Piltover and Zoan.

One thing to point out with Arcane that is still to this day just insane to me. All of the body language and facial expressions were key framed, they did not use any motion capture in this series. Usually it's pretty hard to capture compelling facial expressions when manually keyframing animations where mocap has been a real boon to many animated series. But they still managed it to such a high degree.

I smashed the SUBSCRIBE button so hard I nearly broke my computer. Coming from a family of therapists-and being in therapy myself-I really appreciated this deep dive into Jinx's journey. Arcane has arguably the most emotional depth of any series or movie I have ever seen. So many shows and movies try to show a character's emotional state, but it's either painted with broad strokes, bad tropes (often dangerously inaccurate), or Pop Psych 101; but the writers here clearly did their homework, and they cared enough about the characters to make them feel real. The characters' actions were driven by their emotional state rather than "the cool factor"-though the action scenes were insanely cool!-often with devastating consequences. It's so hard to portray trauma without resorting to shallow clichés, but Arcane really nailed it in showing us the journey from Powder to Jinx. It's heartbreaking because it feels so real, and it's done with such care, nuance, and understanding, while also being wildly intense, entertaining, and visually stunning. The writers also managed to pull off another amazing achievement: virtually every character in this series is The Protagonist, and from a writing perspective, that's practically impossible-to get us to care about the actions and motivations of every character who appears on screen. Arcane gives us complex, three-dimensional characters in a 2D animated series-adapted from a video game. I am in awe.

I just want to say huge thanks for this video. I've also dealt with many traumas from young age, and I relate so much with Jinx's ptsd panic attacks and her emotional struggles. The animating team did fantastic job on describing how having traumas+poor mental health feels like. And you did perfect job on breaking those down one by one, on such an intimate level, without dehumanizing people with mental illness. Those things-making one dimensional, hateful or wrong accusations on real life identities- sadly happen very often with character analysis videos, you know. But watching this video, I felt catharsis, not the fear that you might get the details wrong. So thank you. Thanks for looking at people/characters with delicate, loving eyes. I will say that the actress for Young Powder might have put a little too much emphasis on speaking the line "she is not my sister anymore" clearly rather than keeping the emotion that was so apparent both before and after that line. It felt less like grief and more like she was "just being dramatic" and the contrast was severe enough to knock me out of the story briefly. The cadence of the line just felt a little...goofy. I love and agree with your descriptions of all the characters as they relate to Jinx, and wanted to share my own thoughts on Silco not just towards her, but towards Vander. I believe he was always emotional. He has sympathy. He understands emotions all too well, which is how he's so good at manipulating them. I think the cruelty that informed his entire life before Powder became his daughter is more a result of combining a reduced (not absent) sense of empathy with a dismissal of the importance of rationality in contrast to logic. It was only at the warehouse, when Silco found himself in exactly the same position as Vander did at the bridge, that his empathy for another being increased. It wasn't by much, and it was overshadowed by a startling increase in compassion, but it was there. He was confronted with the consequences of his actions in the most immediate and visceral way possible. He saw a real person hurting in the way that he had been hurt so he wanted to help. But because he valued logic so highly in comparison to rationality he ignored the context and Powder's personal convictions. He took Powder's grief-stricken explanation that it was Vi's fault, not his, at face value and absolved himself. This left his conscience clear and meant he didn't have to change. Vander, by contrast, took responsibility for the situation. He quite easily felt the hurt that Vi and Powder did, and though he didn't quite understand it well enough to know how to fix the underlying cause, recognizing his own fault in the matter gave his newfound compassion greater strength - if also rougher edges. It was at that point he truly had the desire to help those around him. It motivated him to surrender that dream he and Silco had shared and devote himself to the people that he had hurt. I think the worst part about his fate is that he had still been growing as a character when it happened. Since the bridge, he had gained a measure of the sympathy that Silco used to manipulate people - as he demonstrates when diffusing the situation with Huck. He grew even further during the fight in the warehouse, when he took up arms once more and fought for a truly righteous cause - the safety of his children - for the very first time in his life. It was a glorious capstone to such a briefly-seen character arc, and yet I still believe he could have grown even further if he survived. (Which would be why I'm likely one of the few people who believes Episode 9's Stinger to be narrative gold on top of being a top-tier mythology tie-in.) I believe that the reason Silco was so certain that she needed the exact the same thing he did, rather than something that suited her uniqueness, was because his compassion was weighted so heavily towards Sympathy, rather than a better balance with Empathy, combined with a thought process equally weighted towards logic over rationality. Vander had a chance to give Powder what she needed, rather than what he needed, and Silco couldn't understand the difference until he understood why his brother "gave up the cause". And then, in Episode 9, he does learn. Jayce gives him that devastating ultimatum, and he finds himself unable to imagine a world without Jinx in it. Even the nation of Zaun doesn't seem complete without her. That's why the line "is there anything so undoing as a daughter?" is so damn powerful for me. It feels like the singularity where all plots and characters meet. The needs of one's children supersedes all others. There is no pain greater than that of outliving your own children. Silco finally has his Empathy and Rationality brought up to healthy levels. And like Vander, he dies almost immediately after becoming a complete person - doing something that on the surface seems completely out of character for someone who is thought to be cold and calculating: reacting purely on an emotional drive to protect his relationships. They are estranged far beyond repair, but they are still brothers. Still so similar despite walking such different paths. And their last words reflect this, impressing the thing they now value the most on the daughter they were closest to. Vander enjoins Vi to be a protector, to put others' needs above their own. Silco promises Jinx that she does not need to change. Her own needs come first always. My feelings about Silco's last line are complex. I love it, and it's beautiful and it's heartwarming but I also hate it, and it disgusts me. To say that Jinx is perfect is to say that the killing, the grief, the pain, are as things should be. Powder is the name she was born with, and nothing can change the good times she had with Vi. Jinx is the suffering teenager who tosses back breakdowns like candy and nothing can change that either. Going back to Powder is impossible because there's just too much trauma and other sorts of growth that have happened since then, but living as Jinx is just as impossible. Nothing lies down that road but pain and despair. When Silco affirms Jinx, and not Powder, he is saying that the pain is all that matters. That suffering is happiness. When Vi affirms Powder, and not Jinx, she's implying that the pain was pointless, that it can just be thrown away and forgotten. Vi and Silco tore her apart because neither could accept that both personas were a part of her. Anyway, I've made myself cry at least six times writing this comment. I don't know if my thoughts match up with the literature anywhere other than where it matches up with what you say in this video but in the end I don't think I care. I just hope it resonates with someone.

I gotta say, Georgia is the only therapist that managed to made me listen and try to understand most if not everything she's saying as well as having me realize, see and tried a few times to open up how I feel, think and reflect on me. I'm still trying to express my feeling and sometimes I even try to reflect on myself more then just biological fact. PS. English is not my native tongue and for that I apologize if and for my bad english.

In a lot of "good to bad" stories, there are several points along their character arc that if any one of them were removed, it wouldn't impact the outcome much, so you can kinda make yourself believe that there wasn't anything that could be done to stop them turning bad. What makes Jinx's story so tragic is the fact that the entire reason she ended up turning was because of a single moment. If Vi had gotten back to Powder before Silco showed up, or if that enforcer guy didnt kidnap her, Jinx probably would have never existed. It's one of those things where something _could_ have been done to save her, and that simple fact makes the tragedy of her story arc all the more impactful

That was an amazing video, thank You so much! It does explain why Jinx seemed so different on the bridge with Ekko and why did she lose. I'm surprised that You didn't mention anything about her killing people and commiting terrorists acts.

31:42 he wants her to give up hope in her sister becouse he wanted to belive in his brother and he got hurt really bad. he thinks jinx is exactly like him and thats the reason she is the only one he truly trusts and loves. sevika is rly close to silco and even loses her arm in order to protect him. he asks her in the loyalty scene if she was temptet tho. thats something he never would have asked jinx. i have no doubt that silko loved jinx untill the bitter end.

I completely agree with what was being said around 1:13:00 and up,I think the combination of thinking silco lied about Vi,Vi leaving with caitlyn, and finally echo turning on her as well took its toll and she really tried to end it all there

im both 100% analytical and 100% emotional and ive noticed people have a hard time understanding me and i always feel at war with myself, i feel like im both one thing and the opposite at the same time, for example i have a common interest with everyone but fit in nowhere, i have hobbies in common with everyone but am always left out, im anxious and shy around people but i love being around them, im very open minded but head strong and stubborn... i feel like im 2 separate things in one body and it feels like im tearing myself apart with any difficult decision 9:53

Again thanks for visiting Arcane again, it's still one of my absolute favorite even though I'm a 57 year old woman living in Denmark. And I have to add that your insight makes it even better 🙂 There are two things that I'm wondering about. First, Vi and Powder crosses the big bridge in the beginning, Why? Is it because they are coming from Piltover or did their parents try to escape and then got killed on the crossing 🤔 Second, Doesn't Jinx have to eliminate the Counsel to not be hunted by them till the end of time. After all, Silco had to give her up to get a deal with Jayce, even though he never wanted to do it. I think that no matter how distressed she might be at the moment she would have to do it anyway. After all, wouldn't she do everything in her power to silence the voices that hunt her when she fights (goes to war, which is more describing, I think)? 🤔

Oh how I hope for a happy ending for Powder/Jinx. But as a Bad guy jinx is scary, smart, and driven. She's the character that you can't intimidate, control, or wear down. All she needs is a good P.R. team and we can get her elected for sure.

I love watching your things, and love how you didn't dignose Jinx with what you think is happening to her psychologically. It is what I try to do when I do my own character anayslis into another character with abandonment issues just like Jinx and argue with someone on Reddit about it. And I love how you go into not only your professional opinion on all characters, Vi, Jinx, Ekko, Caitlyn, Silco, and Vander, but really give a clear picture of what is happening. Can you do a psychotic breakdown of what is going on in Violet's head in the video game Telltale's The Walking Dead in the final season? I would love you to break down what she is battling with as I can tell she suffers much like Jinx on abandonment issues, and an interesting thing I am finding out is how she cradles her ex-girlfriend Minerva over Clementine. The same way Silco does to Jinx on the bridge when Jinx is hurt. Violet does the same with Minerva after she shoots an arrow to Minnie to save Clem. Would love your dissection of what is happening in that scene and why Violet chose to embrace her ex instead of her new love Clementine if you chose to romance Clem with Violet. Violetentine fans can't answer me on that one.

Can you do Warrior Nun? Some very interesting psych to unpack in Ava, who was paralyzed for 13-15 years and then given superpowers.
