I’ve finally found the answer to a question that has been bugging me for a while now, “Does a certain type of bow have to be shot in a certain type of way?”. Now I know that it doesn’t matter the bow, it matters only what is comfortable and works for the archer! Thank you yet again for a very comprehensive video that was enjoyable to watch.

I constantly battle with 'what works for me vs. what is historically correct.' There's a tendency to believe that centuries-old texts are irrefutable, but these same texts were merely an evolution of what came before them. And when we stop evolving, we stop learning.

My thumb hurt so much even with a padded thumb ring after a practice session. What works the best for me though is the Slavic draw. Goddamn that's comfy as fuck with a proper glove I could shoot all day long.

The Kaha brand "Khan" model (discontinued) and the Noman brand (maybe not the same Nomad as premium, custom horsebows?) "Black Shadow" model -- these two affordable bows seem to be at the pre-stack sweet spot of efficient draw length right at 28" (not 30" etc. like at my ear) and so they are examples of horsebows or Asiatic recurves etc. that are compatible with shooting 100% like a Western hunting or target bow -- work fine with Mediterranean draw, left side shooting (the Khan even featured a shelf sold as right-handed model) and anchoring at jaw or corner of mouth at only 28". I'm not saying this form is "better" I'm just defending it being acceptable when you shot this way all your life and are 50 years old and not having a lot of fun reinventing the wheel. All my muscle memory and instinct are in place shooting like a Westerner. And these two bows work fine with it. I'm seeing very famous people shooting an affordable one from Arrouha that even recommends only drawing to 29" max so this one probably works great, too and looks "ambidextrous". I'm not trying to take business away from this gentleman, in fact I have seen him with a Freddie Black Shadow (he preferred an analog to it slightly) and Khans no longer are sold, and I'll bet he'd get you a Arrouha and go over it from stem to stern like he does for such a reasonable retail markup.

I tried the thumb release with the middle finger on one side of the string and the pointer on the other for @ a month. I just never got comfortable or accurate. Now using a middle finger locking the thumb with the pointer just resting on top. I am able to give that 1/8 turn and I get a much better arrow flight. Thanks to all (Kia mihi) fot the comments

Very interesting with two fingers on either side on the thumb release. Also from health POV, its less wear on the joints. Also great to promote to move from "right", and "wrong" and more to solution oriented thinking. Do what works, keep an open mind and try new things. All power to you Armin. All the best! Armin, a fun game on the range. The Parthian shot game. Ie as if you were riding away from a pursuing group of enemy Walk away from the target holding 6 arrows. Turn and shoot right handed, swap hands, turn and shoot left handed either to the target behind you or targets to each side. In other words 360 degrees as if you were riding away. It's a lot of fun.

Of course "what works for you" should be the deciding factor. BUt I would LOVE for you to have a summary post of 'advantage' of different draw techniques based on type of bow, draw weight, arrow weight, foot v horseback, etc. There must be some basic conclusions you can reach that would be very interesting. AND, this is not just theoretical -- because I don't have companies sending me whichever bow or arrow weight I want these kinds of 'experiments' can be very expensive. It would be great to eliminate some of them by using your guidelines. Thanks for your posts.

This comment is a bit late, but the "thumb over, finger split" draw was a common draw technique used by southeast Native Americans for bowfishing since you can hold the draw and the arrow in place with better stability, for an extended period of time, waiting for the fish to stop moving in the river/stream.

There's an old saying in ancient Chinese. Probably can be translated as "There is no better technique, just a stronger person." It's like, Shawn Marion is much better a basketball player than most of the people on this planet, but I won't learn his posture of shooting a basketball... No matter how you do it, only if it's the best way that suites you. Appreciate your sharing. Jia yo!

It sounds like you saw the same vid on the Persian archers as I did just this last week. I found it pretty interesting and you gotta recognize that the idea is based on the historical artifacts. In reference to your different draw methods, while I'm learning that different cultures had certain archery techniques that were widely accepted in that culture but the fact that humans are so unique, I think it's highly likely that within whatever group you might talk about, there were individuals who found alternative ways of doing things that they found easier and what was more comfortable for their own bodies... Just as you say with your own archery, I think countless archers over millennia were doing things their own way even if it wasn't something taught by their peers. If it works for you you'll do it rather than using the 'standard' method that you hate doing, lol. Having been a soldier myself, I can testify to the fact that soldiers will find a 'better way' to do something on their own and they are quite happy to share techniques with their brothers especially if they feel that it will give them an edge against the enemy.

The question on what's historical and what's not is mostly answered by what's practical or not! People tend to ignore that most historical texts and iconography wasnt made/written by an archer or a soldier. It's was done an artist, or a monk. Looking at a historical depiction of someone using bow and arrow is, most of the time, like looking a movie and proclaim, "that's how it works". When it works, it was probably done.

That was brilliant, I’m definitely trying that thumb draw at the club this weekend (assuming we aren’t snowed in). I’ve never seen a draw like that before, I like thumb draw (even though I’m not accurate with it yet), but my biggest problem has been keeping the arrow stable and in place on my thumb ring. This looks like it should solve a number of issues.

I think for slavic release if you shoot heavier bows you can add your pinky to the draw to add strength. But it's critical for accuracy to rotate your hand towards you for a cleaner release. This helped me immensely.

I can use this method quite "ok" upto 60#28", but it is very struggle for anything above 60lb draw, seems two little finger is too less to hold 80, or 90lb draw....

I firmly believe knowing multiple styles of release can be beneficial for an archer. My favorite style of draw is the Mediterranean release. However I do sometimes play around with the Mongolian release (a.k.a. Thumb release) whenever I'm practicing with my bow. And from what I researched, the Mediterranean release is excellent for consistent accuracy while the Mongolian release is best for speed and on horseback.

I’ve been practicing the “Persian” release with a low profile, polished steel Turkish thumb ring. So far, it has been both comfortable and effective. The more even pressure on the thumb seems to create a more neutral state in the string. By that, I mean the string isn’t rolling about it’s axis, nearly as much as it does in any other conventional draw. This appears to make even a little bit of khatra quite effective. Definitely an intriguing technique!

As i mentioned in an other of your video thumb release felt so much better to me than mediterranean release i used exclusively for almost 20y now. But this kind of happened accidentally when i decided to make a leather pad, all the rings i tried and naked thumb hurt too much. The difference went from being almost impossible to shoot accurately with rings from seeing instant clear benefits. Draw experience and snappiness of the arrow are just on an other level when you use thumb, it's not even comparable, and i didn't lost accuracy but probably gained a bit because you can clearly feel the release is cleaner as the arrow goes straighter in most cases; all this left me a bit shocked to be honest. Mainly because most people comments about thumb release made me think i would have to "relearn everything". Yes the thumb skin hurt a bit, but it's really nothing that bad, it's just a hardening feeling of skin and joint. And i used the exact same bow i used for years (40 lbs recurve) because that's the only one i ever practiced with and have. All this make me want to try other methods, rather than sticking to one method as i did for so long. I will try this double hook.

Beautifully said, thank you for sharing these techniques! On KZfaq there's a proliferation of people who consider themselves 'experts' and like to pontificate regarding what they consider right or wrong. You are clearly very accomplished, yet don't take yourself so seriously that you feel the need to constantly remind us of your expertise; you just embody it. And I very much enjoy your sense of humour. When I'm learning something new that I'm passionate about, it's very easy for me to fall into the trap of noticing how badly I'm doing something while I learn. But you make it clear that, rather than get lost in details, I should simply enjoy the process as I practice. Archery is now starting to feel as it did when I was a child just having fun.

Earlier this week I heard of two things I've never heard of before. "Three below release" where all three of the fingers of a mediterranean release are below the arrow knock; and "string walking" where the release fingers are moved up or down the string below the arrow knock to change the arrow's angle for the different ranges. This way of shooting requires two knock "rings" (or zip ties in my case), one above and one below the arrow knock to hold it in place. I'm going to try it this week end and see how it works out for me.

I think your mention of historically correct is interesting because I can easily imagine archers of the past just doing what worked. Obviously when they were first taught theyd likely start from whatever the official way as determined by that teacher but you might find yourself tweaking it to suit you. Art often shows a fair variety of techniques like which side of the bow to position the arrow and Ive heard some say thats artistic liberty. Id argue that maybe instead of adding variety the artists may be reducing it. Every slight variation in ways the human hand can reasonably grip an arrow is pointless especially when hands are so difficult to get looking good. Besides if those purists really were trying to be historical then theyd probably use those incredibly high draw weight bows that require you to use practically every muscle you have. I firmly believe that most techniques that feel reasonable will work with practice and should only be avoided if you might hurt yourself, those around you or your bow. Extremely long winded way of saying I appreciate the ways you look at these "traditional" techniques and give alternative variations

great video....I like the way you "think" out loud. Question: in previous videos I noticed that you commented on the vibration of the bow after "plucking" the string. how is the vibration of this bow? Judging from the fact that you have not commented on the vibration of this bow I would assume it is of little consequence?? Is the vibration of the bow more of a comfort issue or does it relate more directly to accuracy?

Very interesting Armin! Just practicing the movement without a bow actually feels much better on the wrist. As you say, that technique seems to lend itself to a better movement with the shoulder, with less torque? pressure? against the wrist when using the Mediterean or 3 under etc. Any reason why you could not use that type of release with a longbow shooting off the shelf on the lest hand side? Anyway, I'll give it a try later today. Cheers!

I tried to shoot this style with the indexfinger on the left side of the string, since i dont have big hands and not really long fingers, its a bit uncomfortable. The flesh between my fingers gets squished together and my thumb is not long enough to rest secure on the string. Maybe just a technic not made for my hands :) But as allways a really nice and informativ video!

Just in from a quick initial try. Forgot to switch the gopro to record, so no footage (yet!), I'll try again tomorrow after work, light permitting. The slavic draw and release , only problem I had at all was that my thumb was sticking up in the air, as it is now used to being hooked round a string. It is fast to load, and a nice clean release, and the arrow is firmly in place. I could easily get used to shooting that way. The thumb draw split finger draw and release feels really secure, firm and a clean release too, it feels great to draw and the release is unnoticeable. The only issue I had was that it felt a little clumsy bringing my index finger over to the left, but a little practice it would soon become second nature. Tried with the 30lb alibow turkish bow, with a finger from a normal glove cut off and protecting my thumb.

Pick up your arrow with your middle finger and thumb. Fold your index finger down. When you raise your arrow to your bow nock it with your hand at an angle so the string slips in between your index and middle finger before you nock, then just pull the arrow onto the nock extend your index finger and slip your thumb under. Should look like youre pushing the arrow forwards and then backwards when youre nocking. This is a cool method because effectively it allows you to shoot on the left side of the bow with a thumb draw gaining the benefit of aiming down the arrow, drawing flat with a fist, as well as farther back on a "short" bow without crushing your fingers.

at 3:00, I thought I saw historic Chinese drawing/painting depicting this method of string draw. I'm guessing this is for extremely high draw weight bows. Having two fingers (left & right of string) reinforcing the thumb, you're practically holding the string in a fist.

I just gave that hold (thumb and two fingers) a try...gotta say stability wise a better hold..the Slavic one is kinda harsh..thanks for the suggestions.

Interesting technic. I have this ideia that even (or specialy) back than, the "historically correct" would have many variations and "personal touch" depending on personal preferences and what works for the person. Not only in archery. But hey, I'm not an scholar, so I don't have any solid foundation to back up this idea, I just have some interest in those things. Thanks for video! Ps: Brazilian customs sucks, they are in process to send my fiberglass tatar back to china to ali bow.

I searched Persian draw in youtube, but it's different with what you shown that it's somehow resembles Slavic draw. I wonder what the actual name of the drawing techniques you'd shown here.

Balakrishnan Venkataraman Hi, I have some questions about the dzungar as I was thinking of getting one. It seems like a nice alternative to the English longbow/horsebows I normally shoot. How smooth a draw do you get out of it? Cast? Any hand shock? (not an issue as far as I'm concerned but worth knowing). If you can help at all that would be great as it seems like a lovely bow:)

Charlie Hargrave Dear Charlie Hargrave, My Dzungar has a maxdraw of 32”. It draws 48 lbs at 28”. There is no mentionable hand shock. The draw is smooth and the cast is very good with the proper arrow. I shoot both Mediterranean and thumb style and find it very smooth and efficient. In a nutshell I am very happy with the bow. Albeit The speed is lesser when compared to a laminated horse bow of the same poundage . Happy archery!
