This is so very true! I learned on a recurve when I was young, and my boss just gave me this 25+ year old TSS Quadroflex compound bow that I just bolted a bunch of kit to. It is very heavy compared to the modern compound bows I have handled in the store, but could not afford.

This was a wonderful video presented in a straightforward, simple and clear manner. I am thinking of getting back into archery after 50 years and yes I am an old man. I will start with a recurve bow and it will take me a while to build up my strength. Thanks guy!

i tried archery at a 4h summer camp this year and got totally hooked! i cant wait to get a bow. This video is really well made and is a treasure trove of great info. I will definetly come back to this when i eventually get one.

I Loved this video. I am waiting for my first compound bow to arrive from Cabela's and I don't know a thing about shooting bows. Your tutorial helped me to understand the working of a bow a little better. Thank you.

Very informative, thanks. I tried shooting for the first time last weekend with a recurve bow. Was very fun and the guy seemed to think I'm a natural as I kept hitting red. Archery's on at the London Olympics today too so have enjoyed watching that :) unbelievable how many 10 pointers they can get at 70m!

wow, I forgot how cool archery was.. I took lessons when I was 14 and i'm watching this 12 years later just to refresh my memory. haha. I love archery it gave me something to do at my friends house when she was busy baby sitting her brother and sister. XD

Bought my son a lil Sioux bow for Christmas, he likes it but wants a lil banshee compound like his cousin got. So he's been shooting the compound and I've been shooting his little one. But it's so fun that now I want to get an adult size recurve :-) Thanks for the video and thanks for replying God bless in all your comments! God bless you!

My friend has wanted to get into archery after watching me do a competition but I am a crappy teacher. I have been shooting (bow hunting and competitive) for about 10 years. This video is great but there are so many more basic tips you could give although I will recommend this video.

I just got into Archery myself and I currently have a re-curve Bear Titan bow. It's got some power behind it. I do plan on using it to get used to shooting and then after maybe a few months, move into the modern stuff like compound bows and oh yes, crossbows.

Thanks for the video! Just got my first bow, needing a wrist guard though, hit my wrist with the string a few times already... This video helped me understand what the leather bit was for that came with the bow though (to protect your fingers), thanks for that!

ok thanks alot man! i'm glad you got back to my question so fast and you actually put depth into your answer. i'll have to look into getting finger tabs or gloves tho because the bow i'm working on has a pretty heavy draw and i doubt my bare hands could take it for more than a few shots. that's mostly why i was asking. but thanks again :) god bless you too sir!

Thank you so much for the quick reply. It really helped. I am going to practice more tomorrow, and focus more on keeping both eyes open. Maybe I´ll also go look for an arm guard, depending on the price. Today I just used a long "glove"-like ting :)

Thanks for the video, it was very informative. Got my very 1st adult sized recurve today but I had 2 other youth sized longbow's and a compound over the course of my childhood. I should probably join an archery club at some stage soon too to learn the fundamentals properly.

Generally, when you load the arrow onto the string, you hold the arrow with one finger above the shaft and two fingers below the shaft.

I really loved this tutorial because it cleared up most of my questions in a short time period, but I do have one last question: Is there any type of bow; whether it be wood or fiberglass, that I should avoid based on possible limb snaps or failures? I would really want to own a recurve bow because of its physical beauty and experience regardless of price, but reliability and possible failure points FAR outweigh looks in my opinion. Any response would be greatly appreciated!! :)

i just got a recurve bow as a gift. i'm told its a 58" entry level bow. i just know it says The Mancos model X-40 and Shakespeare on it. i've never used a bow before so i'm looking at vids for tips before i go try it. Just wanted to say thanks for the info and ask if it matters at all if you use your index finger to mark your anchor point? i was told that its alway index finger to mouth corner or cheek bone.

"Anchor point" is when you put your pointed finger at the corner of your mouth.....my question is that, is there a possibility of you hurting your mouth accidentally when releasing the string to close to the corner of the mouth? the professional archers always pull the string until it touch the tip of their nose...what is your comment on this style?

Thank you for posting this. I am looking to begin traditional archery, so this was interesting to see. I was wondering, however, if you have any tips for those who are beginning specifically with a long bow.

no desire to hunt but i would love to taget/sharp shoot. want to keep it minimal tech and more intuitive and natural (mech release doesnt appeal to me). thanks for the post, I may adapt a new hobby

Hey, I just wanted to follow up and say thanks for your content. I watched an enormous amount of material, went with the Samick Sage. I just got in from my first shooting experience. I had never shot before tonight, trying to self teach, set up a target in the yard. I followed techniques I saw online ad enjoyed "ok" accuracy :) Was sure to relax bow grip, I also did much better when my forward forearm was not locked. No string slap, I took off the guard after a few minutes. I was out for a good two hours and I just had so much fun. I cant wait to try again, but wanted to say thanks because without material like this Id have never have had the nerve to try it out.

How much is a bow and arrow and which would you prefer for beginners? a traditional bow or a modern bow with sights you showed in the video?

How do you keep the string from slapping your arm? How do you keep the plastic fletching from cutting your hand in a bow without an arrow pass?

I think I use that "Robin Hood" longbow with instinctively shooting. Ha ha, I already have a bruise on my arm because of the string. I think it is really fun. But what do you use as arm-protection? Is it enough to use a jacket or something like that. Also, do you close one eye when you aim, or is it best to keep both eyes open? And one last thing: Is it best to aim straight at you target,or do you have any rules like "aim a little over, or a little to the side"? Great video by the way! :D

dude i just got my first english longbow today. and i shoot at about 30yards. i hit the target most of the time. when shooting instinctively i hit about 2/3. my bow has a 50# draw weight
