Hoyt, Win&Win, Samick, SF, Cartel...what's in a brand? We look at the big names in the archery market and how confident you can be in putting your money into a brand name versus a budget buy off eBay.
Note: A lot of viewers have pointed out my summary of Uukha and MK. While I lumped them into one batch one alternative mid-range brands, they are more appropriately well-known top-end brands. They're harder to come by, but they offer excellent products that aren't seen as frequently, mostly due to sponsorships by other companies.

MK Korea actually makes the most expensive recurve bows - their top end risers and limbs are more expensive than those of Hoyt and W&W. Uukha's top end products are not mid-range either. I agree with the main point of the video though.
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 8 жыл бұрын
Most brands cover a range, so while I did say that MK and Uukha offer mid-range options, they're certainly not limited to only mid-range, and they do offer valuable top-end gear too. Generally, if the brand is trusted and reputable, most if not all of their items are worth their price.

+NUSensei Fair enough. I realize that most brands cover a range, but at least in the case of MK their most well known products are high end (e. g. Veracity limbs), which I see is what you've added as a footnote.
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 8 жыл бұрын
It's good to point these things out. I know MK and Uukha have good products, but as they're relatively uncommon here I wasn't sure how good they were, so I had them as "alternatives" in my mind. This certainly isn't to say that they're poorer options, and they're certainly worth looking at and many people are very happy with their performance.

I don't know if pse makes decent recurves, but they make some of the top of the line flagship level compounds. Even some people who hate the citation's price tag still go with shooting pse with the supra focus even though it has been 1-2 years old! Just shows that you don't need a new bow in order to be good, you can still get older models and shoot nice scores :)

Hi NUSensei. Love your videos. I paid the most attention to one called " can you teach yourself archery". One question. Any comments on a brand called GEOLOGIC. I'm certain they have bows that are beginner level stuff. When I read about them the first thing that came to mind was "Toyota"; mass produced, cheap, and probably good vfm. I ask because this is one (and I mean the only one) brand I can get where I live, and where I live is not big in archery.

I'm sorry, but calling FIVICS, MK and UUKHA 'mid-range' is definitely a misconception. FIVICS and MK have a product range from mid-range to the very highest of high-end, and UUKHA is one of the most expensive if not THE most expensiveand exclusive brand in all of recurve archery.

I have a Great Tree Archery recurve. it was very cheap ( as far as bows go). But I bought it knowing it was cheap because I was on a strict budget. Plus I break things and I didn't want to spend a fortune on a bow just to break it. However my bow has been solid. It's kind of wonky at times but I chalk that up to me being bad at archery. LOL.

A video like this while it does help to inform someone about archery also strengthens a stereotype that no quality can be found on places like eBay and Amazon. As such I am very conflicted as to if I like this video or not. You can find very high quality equipment of any kind (even for example hoyte bows) on these sites especially by using the filtering tools which makes them a phenomenal resource for those willing to learn to use them.

It's worth noting that this video pre-dates the rise of sellers putting up their stock on Amazon and Ebay. Particularly, a lot of Chinese brands have made significant headway into the mainstream market with quality models rather than knockoffs and cheap youth kits. As with many things, the market will change, as they have over the past decade.

@@NUSensei Honestly suprised to see you reply, hats off to you man. A very fair point markets change a lot, I'm generally just bugged by this type of stereotype being spread since even a used, reliable item is almost always leagues above a cheap knockoff and quite good for beginners. Also important to note this was not meant to slight you, just stating an opinion and hoping to inform someone that comes to your channel

Although Cartel risers and limbs are ok, I would NOT recommend any of their accessories (except maybe their arrow rests). Their sights are poor imitations. Although they look ok and may seem ok for entry level, they are not. They require multiple tightening, needing the Alan wrenches on you at all times to make the adjustments. Even with the wrenches, they vibrate apart. My norm is to shoot and then check and tighten the sights and plunger constantly. If I don't, the plungers fall out of the riser, the sights fall apart...literally...as in the pieces will drop to the ground. The plungers are impossible to keep tight without another tool, each plunger having multiple sizes of alan wrenches used. Meaning, you can't keep just one on you, but a multitude of them. For entry level, a Cartel riser and limbs are ok (though the limbs are loud) but splurge and buy a Shibuya sight and Beiter plunger and another higher-end, clicker. If you don't keep up with archery, you should be able to resell those items. No one will buy a used Cartel site...(except maybe an Ebay shopper).

This video is somewhat old and probably this has been said, but I want to make some corrections: 1) the largest segment in commercial archery is probably bow hunting; there's roughly 18 millions of bow hunters in the world and almost half of them live in USA, target archery and 3D archery are niche landscapes in terms of finnacial weight; 2) the four largest brands in the market are Mathews, Hoyt, PSE and Bowtech, mostly in that order (Hoyt makes more variety of bows, and is part of Easton which is the largest arrow manufacturer, but Mathews probably sells more bows); Mathews also owns Mission which is a mid price brand; PSE is huge but instead of having smaller brands has from entry level quality bows to top high end; Bowtech is a bit smaller but istill comparable to the other three. 3) After those four you have a dozen of more niche brands (but still top quality) which either are new or have loss some weight; that includes Draton, Bear or Martin amongst the historical or Elite, Obsession, Xpedite or Athens in the newer. There's top quality manufacturers in the recurve landscape (as Win & Win) which despite their tech and features are merely a shadow in terms of sales compared to the "4 big".

@@NUSensei I known, and I get that most of your audience is aware that your content goes around the modern recurves for the olympic style archery, or just recurves. But for that reason seemed weird to hear about PSE "as a mid to low budget brand". They barely make recurves (their "Heritage" models), and the same happens with Bowtech: most of their production are compounds the same as PSE and Mathews. The thing is, sometimes you talk briefly about compounds for target/3D, and in those fields PSE has products above Hoyt (Hoyt has the Prevail, Pro Force and Double XL, PSE has the Perform, Shootdown, Supra Focus and Phenom).

They don't look like anything special. I'm skeptical because the specs are somewhat ambiguous (e.g. the string material is "imported"), and as I said in the video, many archery stores are hesitant to work with Chinese bows because of their dubious quality. If it works for you, that's fine, but they're dead-end purchases that don't really promote or encourage the buyer to train or upgrade in the future.

The bowstring wouldn't snap. However, it isn't possible to curve the arrow in mid flight like that. The closest effect is inducing a "fishtail" movement, but you otherwise make the arrow curve.

Hey NuSensei, what about buying second hand? I use a Yamaha α-ex that was gifted to me by my uncle. in an attempt to get some spare limbs i bought 2 secondhand bows which turned out to be a Hoyt pro-medalist and a Hoyt gold-medalist. On a related note, since all of these bows were apparently made pre-standardised limb fittings, none of their limbs fit the other risers and none of the risers fit current limbs. I got 2 sets of limbs for the Yamaha (36" and 38") and both Hoyts are 40" Do I stay on the lookout for possible replacement limbs (Yamaha hasn't made bows since '93 so they are becoming rather rare and I doubt I'd find any limbs fitting the old Hoyt bows) or switch to a new model bow if my limbs need replacement or I'm ready to move up in draw weight?
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 7 жыл бұрын
Buying second-hand is a good budget alternative, as bows typically do not depreciate in quality, only in cost. Buying really old stock (e.g. Yamaha) is problematic because there are limited parts in circulation. If you've acquired a cheap used target bow, it's best that your next step will be a newer modular platform (i.e. current-gen riser).
@Doomchild_

Bear in mind that the Hoyt GM uses the Hoyt Dovetail System for limb fittings. The HDS is actually the patented original version of what we now call the ILF (International Limb Fitting) standard. Modern ILF limbs will fit onto the Hoyt GM. I've put new W&W EX limbs on my coach's old Hoyt GM. One of the strangest matches, but perfectly viable.

I've tried modern limbs in the Hoyt GM but they didn't fit (pockets in the riser aren't deep enough) though the limbs were from a cheap starter bow and may not have been ILF standard. I'll ask someone in my club if they'll let me test it with one of their limbs. Someone convinced me the GM i have is an early version of the IFL and not compatible with the current standard. Though it wouldn't be the first time he was wrong about something :) either way, thanks again for the info, I may have to switch to a modern riser anyway since none the risers have adjustable tillers
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 7 жыл бұрын
The thing to keep in mind that ILF isn't actually a "standard". Most manufacturers use the same fitting, but their bolts and fittings may have different dimensions. Consequently, certain modern limbs won't fit other ILF risers even though they should.

Can you (or anyone reading this) recommend a bow for a 7 year old, I have no idea how long she will be interested in archery but she's been with me lately while shooting and has shown a lot of interest.

+Talbott Harrison Genesis Original or Genesis Mini would be the right thing for her. They are no-let off compound bows with a low draw weight. Genesis is a sister company to Matthew's Archer.

+Talbott Harrison Diamond Infinite Edge would be the best bow for a young beginner, they have adjustable draw lengths out to 32" and an infinite draw setting, from 5 to 70 lbs draw weight, so essentially, it's a bow that will grow with her, and if she drops intrest, it can be sold to almost anybody that wants to have a go.

can i have your opinion on W&W inno max vs Hoyt GMX, which is better and why?
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 8 жыл бұрын
Neither is really better. Both are excellent risers. It comes down to which look and feel you prefer. The GMX is heavier (being aluminium), while the Inno Max is lighter, but in my opinion has a slightly bulkier look compared to the sleeker contours on other W&W risers.

+Wardor 1992 Both are great companies. Hoyt has been around for over 80 years, and bowtech has been around since I believe 1999. So I would have to say Hoyt. Personally, I shoot a Hoyt and my wife shoots a Bowtech. We both love our bows. Don't worry too much about the name, go with what feels right for you.

I've never heard of the brand until now. If it's something that is not stocked by any archery store and is only sold on Ali Express, it's likely to be Chinese knock-off brand. It may look good, but it doesn't have the confidence of the archery community.

It depends on what I need to get. I get most of my items from interstate, just because of inventory and user interface (online). Otherwise, I buy from Oz Hunting and Bows or Urban Archery.

In fact, Hoyt technically isn't the giant of compound archery, I know Nusensei doesn't touch on compounds that much so I'll forgive him on that. Darton Archery is so giant, that virtually every other brand, including Hoyt pay Darton for their designs and patents on technology. So every "revolutionary technology" phrase they throw around with every brand that makes compounds besides Darton, isn't really "revolutionary" because Darton figured it out and patented it first.

@NUSensei
@NUSensei 7 жыл бұрын
Jandao is a Chinese company that has been making archery products for a while. The TZXL seems to be their foray into the target recurve market. I don't know enough about the TZXL to judge, but the company itself is reputable enough to have products sold in stores (such as basic takedowns and crossbows).

Recently bought all of my equipment (Glove, wax, bowstringer, armguard, 10 arrows, quiver) , a bow (beginner Ragim Matrix bow ~€90), and a straw target for 230 euros. Clubs are not really accesible for me, as the nearest one is 30 min drive away and I don't own a car, so I'm shooting in my backyard. €230 is not that much in comparison to other sports/hobbies, as this equipment will likely last me a long time since I'm doing this purely for recreational purposes.
