Archie (Carroll O'Connor) finds Edith's (Jean Stapleton) old slipper, and finally lets go, crying for the first time since she passed.
From Season 2, Episode 2 'Archie Alone: Part 2': Archie's refusal to grieve over Edith's sudden death continues to take its toll on his friends and family... until one day he happens to go into their bedroom and sees Edith's slippers.

About Archie Bunker's Place: Archie and his partner, Murray buy the neighborhood bar and rechristen it “Archie's Place.” The Bunkers adopt their niece, Stephanie, but during the show's second season, Edith dies, leaving Archie to raise Stephanie, and, soon, another niece, with the help of a black housekeeper. Most of the action is set at the restaurant, with a cast of new characters including Anne Meara as the cook and Jason Wingreen as the bartender.

This scene brought me to tears. My wife passed away in my arms three months ago at the age of 28. One moment we were sitting together watching a movie and two minutes later I'm giving her CPR and begging her not to go. Tell your spouse you love them every single day, because you never know when it'll be the last time.

I feel Archie's pain. My wife and I were married for 46 years. She passed away in 2017. I'm 75 years-old now, and I'll never forget her or get over her passing. When you really love someone, and spend almost your entire life with them, it's...well, I don't wish this on anyone.

@DonnellxxOkaforI'm sorry about the loss of your father. I lost my father in May, 2019. I was very proud of him. My mom died from breast cancer on September 9, 2021. When I called her on September 6, 2021 I made sure to tell her that I love her. She said the same thing to me. The very last time we ever heard each other, we both uttered I love you repeatedly. She died 3 days later, aged 78. Enjoy the time you have left with your mother.

I remember when my grandma passed. My grandpa lasted about 2 years. He had diabetes and was very good at managing it and then had trouble and my mom asked if he was sabotaging it. He said maybe. She asked him, please don't we need you still.

"I was supposed to be the first one to go". They nailed that painful guilt that so many widows/widowers feel. Especially when he says that she was supposed to stay and take care of things and he wasn't good enough to fit those shoes. Brilliantly heart-rending acting

This show kept it real. Didn't sugar coat what it portrayed. Always loved it for that. Archie's grief seems so genuine, we grieve with him. I cried seeing this years ago because it just wasn't fair. Edith was a precious soul. It hurt to see her go and see Archie all alone. But this show kept it real, like I said. Life isn't fair. This happens every day.

Agree, and I think your comment would still be valid if you had stopped at the word feelings. I've watched this scene maybe ten times over the years and the tears flow. I don't watch so the tears will flow but to see O'Connor's and Brisebois' amazing performances. The writing is superb too: how to get into and out of the core of the scene and not leave the viewer at home depressed at the end, revealing that Archie is still Archie. He hasn't given up yet and isn't going to give up now, if for no other reason than Stephanie needs him and he needs her.

I remember the night my father died I stayed at my parents house and I slept on the couch so my mom wouldn't be alone, in the middle of the night I woke up and I felt this feeling of a terrible loss and I remember hearing my mom crying from her room and I realized that for the first time in their 44 years of marriage they didn't have each other anymore and I couldn't do anything to make her feel better.

My Dad lost my Mom just after their 52nd wedding anniversary. Dad was utterly crushed. Like Archie, Dad spent his entire life assuming and planning for him to go first so that Mom would be looked after. He simply wasn't prepared for being without Mom. And, in her own way, Mom was exactly like Edith. Dad passed exactly ten years to the day after Mom, and their funerals were even on the same date, which happened to be Mom's birthday and the anniversary of their first date. No doubt that was the longest ten years of Dad's life, but at least they're together now.

So moving. Such wonderful acting. My father was like Archie. A World War Two combat veteran, staunch conservative, nose to the grindstone. And like Archie in this scene, my mother passed before dad, and dad said he expected to go first. But he lived another 11 years beyond mom to age 93. I lived with him his last 3 years and got stories from him about his childhood and the war I had never heard before. So bittersweet.

Boy do I identify with him now! My own wife died on September 21, 2021 after only four months from being diagnosed with cancer. I cried for over a year (still do, did today). If you haven't lost a spouse, you have never experienced this grief. I felt like him.. I always thought I would go first.

My Mom passed in 2014 they had been married for about 55 years also. My Dad stayed around for another 6. Unfortunately he took his life at 82. And I never expected it. Because he was always here at my house and spent time with my boys and I. He seemed happy but deep down he missed her more than he showed. Not saying that will happen in your case but just spend time with him and pay attention. Because I missed it

I know that feeling. Standing there in the room when it is so quiet all you can hear is your own breath and heart beat. You can still smell the person too. You even feel them. It is an aweful feeling because you realize its final. You'll never see them on this plane of existence again. Makes it even more impactful with Corol Oconnors broken english acting. A simple man trying to comprehend significant loss. Powerful.

Only the third time Archie was ever shown this vulnerable, the first being when the bar was failing and he got hooked on uppers and when Mike and Gloria moved to California. Such a powerful moment. His confession to Edith in the All in the Family finale that he was nothing without her was also very moving.

Brilliant. This sitcom was so ahead of it's time. It played to a live audience, was brilliantly written, impeccably casted, and more courageous than any sitcom since. Carol O'Connor and Jean Stapleton were superb actors. Such iconic characters, and this show didn't cater to stupidity, it held us in high esteem. Unusual indeed.

Most people don’t understand that Carol O’Connor and other actors have to really go to a dark place inside of them to be able to cry and mourn on cue like that. He was one of the greatest actors that ever worked for Norman Lear! 👍🏾🎥🎞️

I'm now 62, and I grew up watching all these wonderful shows. So many talented actors and actresses during the 70's and 80's. They are mostly gone now. And I watch very little TV anymore, because there will never be the true talent that all these iconic people played in the classic sitcoms. Carroll O'Connor, you are surly missed but never forgotten.

Watching Carroll O'Connor was always like watching a master class in acting. The detail and consistency of his character work was sublime in every sense, always matched and complemented by Jean Stapleton in their scenes together. Like all great actors that can also be great clowns, he could rip your heart out and hand it back to you and still make you laugh through the sobs. He is sorely missed.

Weight, substance, depth, life. Yeah, we don't get to see these things anymore. This little scene shows the poetry between the lines. This is art, the ability to move the viewer to feel something real, tangible. If you can't do that... it isn't art. And if it isn't art, why waste the time and the money better spent in more fruitful pursuits?

My grandfather, (aka, Papa,) was this guy's double in looks. When his wife died, he was emotional too. He said a big part of him died inside. Two years later he passed away in his sleep. Thank you for this profoundly touching video.

When he notices her slipper... anyone who's been there knows how overwhelming a sudden reminder like that can be. Its a flood no man with any kind of heart could contain. While Archie was a very flawed man, he always had a big heart.

My dearest husband Adam died in my arms. His last words to me were, "My darling, I'll love you always." The song that was on was, "My Heart Will Go One." On the last note he exhaled never to inhale again. I was 36 and even though I'm 61, I still cry when I hear that song.😢😥💔 This April will make 25 years he died and I am Still in love with him. And I always will be.

I lost a friend of mine who I was the caregiver for back in 2018. It was a wonderful year, with the stuff we did together. We watched shows, sang, and played games. She was like another mother to me. Her passing while under my care was one of the hardest things to endure. I struggle still, but I do not regret the time I had with her. I cry, but I also smile at the good times, laugh at the funny things we would get into. Don't ever forget the memories of those close to you.

The beautiful thing about this scene is that in real life, Jean Stapleton was still alive. It's easy enough to bring up real emotion for a cast member who really died, but this... wow. When Jean Stapleton was first approached with the idea of having Edith die, she said she didn't care, because Edith wasn't a real person. Norman Lear replied "She is to me." And she was to all of us.

Ya know my Yiayia (Grandmother in Greek) couldn't speak nor understand English, but she laughed and laughed when she saw this show and she loved Archie and Edith when they went back and forth. Actually, Norman Lear created the part of Archie Bunker for Jackie Gleason. Carroll O'Connor spoke about it in front of a live studio audience many years ago. It was a anniversary special CBS did for 'All in the Family'. When he told the audience Gleason was first choice for the part, the audience booed. He said, 'No, no...don't boo'. "If Jackie Gleason was the only guy you knew to play the part, you would have enjoyed it." I'm paraphrasing, but I believe he is correct.

This was sad enough, but really, the one that really got me in the feels was when Mike and Gloria said goodbye. Once they walked off the set, Carroll O'Connor gave an audible gasp and put a handkerchief to his eyes. I don't think he was acting.

Carroll O'Conner was one of the most talented actors who ever lived. He went from Archie Bunker to Bill Gillespie, and they were both totally opposite characters, and he was magnificent at them both. RIP
