This his story it literally happened to him. It happened to my Mum too. Stolen Generation went from mid 1800s to 1970s. My Great Grandfather had to carry around a Certificate to say he was a good Aboriginal and he could participate in white society,but had to behind the Boundary(Boundary Rd, St,Lane,) by Curfew this lasted until 1967. That's because we had a referendum Vote to Include Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander as Australian Citizens

Australia's colonial history goes back a mere 240 years. Aboriginal history goes back 60,000+ years. The damage done to them will take God knows how long to heal.

Archie Roach is the indigenous Australian guy singing. Archie and his siblings were taken from their family, he has written a book about it, called "Tell me Why". There are quite a few books written about the stolen generation. The children were taken from the early 1900's until the late 60's. There is also a movie called "Rabbit-Proof Fence, that is based on the true story of three girls that were taken from their families in the 1930's, and their struggles to get back to their families after they escaped from the settlement they were taken to.

Still makes me cry & I dunno how Uncle sang it without breaking down! (I can't) It's very triggering & always makes me think of my Stolen ancestors, but such an amazing song!!! Miss you Uncle Archie...

My father was one of the Stolen Generation. He was one of nine children and they were all taken from my grandma because she insisted that they needed to live traditionally so that they would know who their people were and how they lived. The government disagreed and took them away from her. His father was away working at the time. He came home to a crying wife and an empty home. My father was old enough to remember who his parents were and made contact with them once he became an adult (21 years old). To this day there are still two siblings unaccounted for. When I had children of my own, grandma would always tell me to make sure that we had clean clothes and food in the house or the government would come and take your children away. She was an amazing woman who lived in a small wooden shack with no plumbing or electricity. She physically survived the heartache of her children being taken away but it scared her mentally. Grandma and Grandpa split up because their children were taken away.

A lot of them didn't come back the same though... many of their families, like grandparents, didn't only miss out on seeing their grandkids growing, but the children missed knowing their elders as a lot of them had passed.... it was not only a sad and shameful part of our country's history but it's only recently actually being talked about. Thank you for once again showing respect for our country , it's artists and more importantly our history.

The indigenous peoples have been here for over 60 000 years. British settlers landed in 1786. They didn't manage to outbreed them, despite their best efforts. It also happened in Canada.

Archie Roach is an indigenous singer songwriter an individual not a group. He has written many songs that speak to the indigenous experience and injustices and is a powerful voice in the rights of indigenous Australians.

FYI, me and my partner had the pleasure of interviewing Archie a while back for a radio show. He, himself, didn't know he was part of the stolen generation until a relative of his showed up at his school. It was a privilege to talk to him.

I’ve worked with many indigenous Australians, the inter-generational trauma is so deep and the destruction of whole nations their language and traditions is so deep. Some government policies now are little better - the indue card for instance, neglect of health issues that disproportionatally affect indigenous people such as Kidney disease - led to the death of Gurrumul and Jimmy Little for instance.

This song speaks of children being taken by the government which continued to happen well into the 1970s and we continue to see it to this day done in other ways. It’s disgusting what our communities go through with the systemic racism that is never addressed.

Archie Roach is a truly great man and wonderful story teller on par with Paul Kelly. In fact they are great mates. My sister works with the Aboriginal Trust Fund. Her job is to find and contact these poor people who were stolen and tell them there is “compensation” money from the government. The trauma these people suffered is unimaginable so you can imagine the phone calls are not at all straight forward. Just an abominable part of our history.

The grievous damage that was done to our indigenous brothers and sisters though this heinous systematic abuse is incalculable and recent. We as a country live with the consequences of the social and psychological damage that was inflicted on an entire race. No amount of recompense alone can erase what was done. I hope and pay that with time acknowledgment recompense and understanding there will come healing and recovery but there is still a very long way to travel before that is so. It shames and worries me to hear this spoken of as something that is in the past it is not past it’s consequences are very much present in the here and now.

We just lost our Archie, just a few days ago. Godspeed dear Archie, We love you. To see his beautiful face and hear his voice makes me weep. The woman is his wife Ruby, He used to say the highlight of his career was supporting Bob Dylan in Sydney in 1992 at the State Theatre. We were there and so surprised to see him. He got a standing ovation.

Australians used to refer to the “Convict Stain” and a great national shame at the fact that modern Australia was established as a convict settlement and much of the population was descended from transported criminals. However the REAL stain on our country has been the treatment of our First Nations peoples, and the fact that for nearly 200 years there were official policies of genocide designed to do away with Aboriginal culture and society. The Stolen Generations is one example of those genocidal policies and their consequences. Archie Roach is one of our great songwriters, and he sings here from personal experience, having been separated from his family and culture at a young age. A powerful and important song.

So my grand dad was part of what’s called the stolen generation . His parents raised 5 children in a tiny outback town about 800 km from Sydney. They were separated and told not to tell anyone they were aboriginal . They were Archie alive skin . It was brutal and cruel and on some level still happens . Yes children need to be protected but when they are sent to Anglo Saxon families they lose touch with their history and culture. Archie is a hero. Apparently what they called welfare rolled into town in big black cars and rounded up with kids . Our pain is similar to your culture anyway sad

Thanks for reacting to this song. My grandparents were part of the stolen generation (basically the government kidnapped Aboriginal Children across Australia for decades). Children were still being stolen into the late 1970s. There are still many victims alive to this day. This song is a huge part of our healing as Aboriginal Australians. 💔 So thankful that I was able see Archie Roach perform this song live. It was very emotional ❤️

Archie passed, surrounded by his family and loved ones, at Warrnambool Base Hospital after a long illness. We thank all the staff who have cared for Archie over the past month. He was a healer and unifying force. His music brought people together. A private ceremony will follow. We ask that the media please respect the family’s privacy. I have friends and family who were affected by this. Two of Mum's Cousins who were brothers married Aboriginal Ladies, Mum was really good friends with both of them. One of Mum's Cousins remained married until He died. The other one was a Boxer who was given some terrible advice, which He followed. He was told to divorce His Aboriginal Wife to further His career. There wasn't a Custody Case, the government came and took away My Second Cousins. By the time Her youngest son came back home. She was Prematurely Grey and dying in Hospital, basically She died of a Broken Heart. My Second Cousins were taken care of by their Aunty. Mum's Cousin did patch things up with His Kids. Mum was normally a very forgiving Lady, but She couldn't forgive what He'd done to Her Friend. A Family Friend since the 40's had some of His Siblings Snatched off the street by the government. The government would send Big Black Cars into Aboriginal Communities and do that. From what I've heard what the Canadian government did was even worse starting around the turn of the last century. They rounded up entire Native Canadian Tribes and took away all of the Kids.

Such an important person in Australian history. Archie's cultural input will always be remembered. Very sad to hear he has passed away. RIP mate

Archie is one of our National Treasures. He’s quite frail these days but still producing wonderful music and storytelling. Archie was a great man and a respected and loved elder of his people and a much loved and respected friend and performer amongst those who listened to his music.

I loved Archie Roach and was privileged to meet him at St Kilda Festival a few years ago. Still sang beautifully and was a gentleman. Yes I am white but he chatted to me🌹💜🇦🇺

The Nightingale is a must watch movie. It is a story set in Tasmania, but be aware it doesn't hold back with truths regarding the extreme violence of the day, (early 1800s). Not suitable for a young audience and those who are victims of violence who may be triggered by the traumas acted out in the film.

Rabbit-Proof Fence by Doris Pilkington Garimara is a good read. About three girls who escaped after being taken and their journey following the rabbit-proof fence to get back home. There was a movie adaptation too.

Archie Roach is an absolute legendary storyteller.

I love Archie Roach's voice, - his quiet delivery, so beautiful & a beautiful presence. It was an awful policy in Australia to remove Indigenous children from their parents. It also happened in Canada, another country that's a member of the British commonwealth, - Colonialism, a system of oppression and stealing.

He is a legend and it's with sadness that he has recently passed but back to the land sea, water and stars. With music that lives on. Whilst the idea of the stolen generation being a particular time period may appear as historical. It is still very prevalent in modern society. This enforcement of Anglo European ways has left indigenous folk separated from country and their family story, narratives and dressings. Archie roach uses music to spread a very real message. This did not just happen here in Australia.

Great story song. Thanks for highlighting the story. The Rabbit Proof Fence is a good reference point for the attempted genocide of the Australian Aboriginals who were considered to be part of Australia's fauna and flora until the mid sixties.

So glad you have come to this song - also highly recommend giving the 30th anniversary release a listen, his weathered voice hits even harder. Uncle Archie's recent memoir, Tell Me Why, is a very important read and beautifully written - or better still, he narrates the audio version. A documentary about Archie and his late partner, Ruby Hunter came out in Australia not too long ago and was somewhat surprisingly joyous (I was fully prepared with the tissues). Such an important artist, as was Ruby, so many First Nations singers of all genres speak of how he paved the way for them. His story of how Paul Kelly got him to support him on stage, and then convinced him to record an album is a good one!

Bless The Stolen Generations. Yes acting white but feeling black. That’s how I felt being the only black kid in an all white school in ‘75. Your Ancestors and Descendants are cheering you on. For your healing is their healing 🖤💛❤️
