Final Fantasy XIV currently stands at the top ranks of the MMORPG genre, ten years after its initial release and an unprecedented full reboot after being heavily criticized.
We've spent some time with Naoki Yoshida, who took the helm of the project in December 2010, who recollected on his career, his beginnings at Square Enix and the evolution of FFXIV, now at the end of its third extension.Yoshida also told us about his admiration for Yasumi Matsuno, creator of Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story, who is now heavily collaborating on FFXIV, in addition to his views about the future of the MMORPG genre.

"Executives nowadays, if someone were to attempt to make an MMORPG, they would probably advise to make something like Fortnite instead." Too sad, too real...
@MiloKuroshiro
@MiloKuroshiro 3 жыл бұрын
Why would that be sad tho. The market changes, the Season-pass based content is what's working right now. YoshiP would be the first to embrace it tbh That's exactly how he turned around 1.0 when the old team simply ignored how much things changed after XI's release
@edagos391

@@MiloKuroshiro it's not the design philosophy that is changing (tho that is changing too) but in this context Rava means the mmo genre as a whole being sided for being a hard challenge to get right

@@edagos391 I think next step is VR for MMO..... tbh... things are p boring .... even with the new tech of today .. we still limited to so many things that would make an mmo go popular but its too similar accros the board.. so i think VR is the only way i think MMO would thrive again
@JLydecka
@JLydecka 3 жыл бұрын
@@Userdoesnotexit Yes but the issue is, and what Noaki was alluding to, game studios wouldn't greenlight such projects yet because of the costs involved to make them, and for the money they would generate for the studio on release. Not enough people have VR kits and high end pc's nor the space to play them in to warrant spending all that money on a VR MMORPG. Yes it would be amazing but you're looking at needing millions of VR users for it to be viable, and currently VR is extremely niche.
@ummerfarooq5383
@ummerfarooq5383 3 жыл бұрын
@@Userdoesnotexit no the next original step of ffxiv online is that they fix the cut scenes out, add more audio voice overs, and make a final fantasy flix so that production companies can put their own quests in an online world which people can stream and play. Like the Hildibrand Mandeville series side quests. Shove an isekai background theme mode into final fantasy xiv for new characters. Seriously get rid of the cutscenes cutting at the gameplay.

Excellent interview with an amazing man. Also absolutely beautiful editing for this video thank you so much for sharing it with us! I'm grateful for what he's done to bring FFXIV where it is today. I remember when I first logged in to FFXIV, going on 8 years ago now during the phase 3 beta. A friend gave me a key and I figured I'd try it out for a few days and then move on. I didn't have much experience with MMOs at the time and preferred single player games. I wasn't a fan of online gamers, so many online communities were so toxic it seemed, and I'd also not been a fan of Final Fantasy XIII. After hearing about how much of a failure XIV had been at launch I wasn't getting my hopes up. However, I fell in love with the game from the moment I logged in. When I later saw stories of where the game had been and where it ended up, and when I saw how Yoshida-san and his team had not only remade the game, but incorporated the destruction of the old game into the plot, it just amazed me. Now I look back and remember how frustrating the ARR launch was. I forget sometimes that we had such a hard time back then, and that we were often seeing emergency maintenance every two weeks, or even every week. This game has come a long way even since ARR launched.

one big reason I love ff14, Yoshi P and the dev team as a whole is they're never afraid to hype something up, but they're also completely aware and take into account if what they're planning is a possibility or a pipe dream, he can recognise that he and his dev team are capable of a lot and will push them to the best of their capabilities for the players sake but they also recognise that over promising on something can completely tarnish a good reputation and destroy a dev teams morale especially in MMO development, I genuinely think it's that philosophy coupled with good ethics and smart people running it's development that it's stayed so strong and only increased in it's quality and appeal. Of all the Squeenix execs I trust the most, Naoki Yoshida is the one I have the utmost confidence in with the games he's in charge of and/or overlooking in a producing role. We can rest easy knowing that XVI is definitely in good hands and will meet expectations.

There are many game creators who have made great works and gained many followers, but not many who are as "loved" as he is.

This resonated alot with me as a player who was part of the FFXIV community long before 1.0 release. We saw YoshiP coming in but still we didnt get our hopes up as we had been given to many false promises about the game at this point. It wasn't until that famous Press announcement that player opinions changed and we could see just how sorry they were and hope serious they were about making things right. As the weeks and months went by that excitement only grew as the interactions between the players and SE was finally at the place it needed to be as they finally listened to what we had to say, and we in turn listened carefully to them on their new direction for FFXIV.

Another exceptional documentary! Would love to see if there's anything coming up with either Yasumi Matsuno or Hiroshi Minagawa. Keep up the wonderful work you're doing.

We'll most likely slow down a bit on game related content once the Caravan series is over, but we'll see.

Came here to watch this after Yoshida announced that they'd be delaying FFXVI. I have complete faith in him and the team at SE to deliver us one of the greatest, if not the greatest FF game in the series history. My most favorite game in the series is FFIX for the record :D
