The natural landscape and traditional craftsmanship of Crete inspire a new contemporary residential project by Block722. Situated on the northern slope of Thrypti Mountain, the project was commissioned by a private client and features a 280 m² house with two guest rooms and extensive outdoor areas. Integrating with the natural environment, offering views of the mountains, plains, and the Mediterranean Sea, was central to the architects' approach.
To harmonise with the topography, the house was designed with levels instead of steps, creating a relaxing environment that blends with its surroundings. A sloped path leads from the main road to the entrance, and the complex is divided into smaller volumes interconnected by circulation paths and intermediate spaces, both indoor and outdoor. The main house comprises two low buildings connected by a semi-open area with a water feature. The design uses local materials like wood and stone, maintaining a contemporary aesthetic influenced by Scandinavian and Japanese minimalism.
The architecture emphasises the Greek sunlight, highlighting textured forms and surfaces, and the interiors were planned to be functional and take advantage of the views. The spatial arrangement considers the light and the residents' daily habits, creating visual paths that connect indoor and outdoor spaces. The project promotes a slow lifestyle, inspired by island living.
Block722 collaborated with local artisans to create custom architectural details and furniture, using marble, wood, stone, and mosaic. Many of these pieces are part of Block722's ANATA collection, enriching the design with a blend of art and natural materials. Neutral and earthy colours dominate, prioritising quality over quantity.
Artwork plays a significant role in the project's composition, including an impressive sculpture by Greek artist Pantelis Chandris, specially commissioned for the living room. This 2.8 x 1.5 metre piece complements the architecture, showcasing the perfect fusion of art and design in the project.
