in one of the last frames with the boxes of camera gear, you had the 24mm pancake lense. what would you typically shoot with that? i've got it as well and if you've got any pointers that'd be great

Probably one of the most overlooked subjects in photography is architectural photography. I shot architectural shots for years w a Sinar 4x5, now I use a Fuji GX680. It has the tilt/shift and rise and fall of a large format camera, so buying a tilt shift lens is pointless really. I shot black and white exclusively (no color work here), which made me lose a lot of business but it also helped me gain a solid repeat customer base. A lot good tips on this video for those who are thinking about taking this on. It's hard work, so be ready to do it but once you get going you won't think too much about it and one more thing and I cannot stress this enough: Enjoy what you do, as it will show up in your product.

I enjoyed the "details" part and the "declutter" part reminded me a lot of Japanese minimalism. Over time, I've found that my gear doesn't make much of a difference, some of my best shots are with inexpensive or out-dated gear. (Nonetheless, I really want the Fuji 16mm f/1.4 for arch.!) NB: I noticed you said that photography has helped you see more objectively, I bet you it's both, photography can help one see both more objectively and subjectively! The camera is, after all, the ultimate subjective view... Thanks for this, a video of a calming personality, colors, and pace.

Made the big jump from a 60D to a 5dsR after booking lots of jobs. This required me to upgrade all my glass to Tilt Shifts & L's. My next learning curve is learning 10-bit editing for publications.

Right now I'm using a Panasonic G85 for my videos and photography. I like the 4K, the colour, and the price. It's a very easy and fun camera to use. @@30by40 If you were to upgrade from the Canon 6D, what would you consider?
@30by40
@30by40 5 жыл бұрын
@@MANaboutTOOLS gear is a real weakness of mine...you too? For upgrades it always depends whether you want to stay in the Panasonic family or not (presuming you have Panasonic glass and accessories already). For me Canon advantages are: autofocus (I never have to worry about it), color (it's natural + really appealing right out of the box even if you choose not to colorgrade) and the range of lenses available. If I were to upgrade, the next body I'd get would be the 5DMKIV amzn.to/2WtoQLh , mostly for the 120fps, but also b/c I'll want 4K at some point in the future, and I'm already invested in the Canon ecosystem. The bummer about the higher end Canon bodies is the lack of a flip screen. So all that said, I'm super happy with the 6DMKII right now (it's their least expensive full frame that has an flip screen)...so far it's been great and the dynamic range for folks like you and me is more than adequate. BTW - Love your work, esp. the voiceover quality...what mic are you using?
@MANaboutTOOLS
@MANaboutTOOLS 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah... I love gear too. It seems like there's no perfect camera out there. They all have something they lack that the other brand has. And thank you for your kind words and support! For my VO work I use a Sennheiser e835 Dynamic Mic with a Triton Fethead phantom in-line preamp. This runs into a Scarlette Solo USB interface. I hang blankets in my office to deaden the room the best I can.

FYI - "DxO Photo-Lab" is excellent for creating rectified photographs suitable for use for publications and documentation. It's the best software I've found for correcting my photos when I've not been so careful levelling the camera on the tripod or not using the tilt-shift lenses. I recommend adding one of the 70-200 Canon series of lenses to complete your kit - they'll get you up close if you need a detail up close like a chimney cap or for architectural detail. It's a natural companion to the 24-70 you've already got. I have a different take on flat lighting - for documentation purposes (like in heritage work where the photo is acting like a drawing for notes etc.), an overcast (flat light) day is highly preferable, otherwise the deep shadows block detail and areas of the building that I want to see and potentially note up. For showing off built work in a publication or online,... yes, sunny and deep shadows create interesting and dynamic photos. Another great video!

When straightening converging verticals, it's not always a good idea to straighten them fully. This is especially important on tall buildings because, looking at them with the naked eye, they will seem to converge slightly due to the visual perspective. If you look at an image of very tall building that has been fully straightened, it will look as if it's falling forward. As for tilt/shift lenses, there seems to be some real bargains around at present in the UK on Canon products, because the "latest lens" brigade are trading in for the newer versions.

For Architectural and Interior photography, a crop sensor camera (Canon 1200D) is not bad. It's a good camera for beginners. You will need a wide angle lens but not that wide that it will make the space look converging. So, you will need a 10-22 mm lens. If you had a full frame camera, a 16-35mm lens would have been good. To understand more about why a particular focal length is used for a certain sensor camera for the kind of photography. You will have to understand what is a crop sensor camera and what is full frame sensor. In fact, please do look up what are the other sensor cameras available.

Currently using a Sony A6000 with stock lens kit. It's been great but after traveling for 3 months I find I now need to buy some better lenses... lower aperture and also a wider lens. I did borrow a telephoto lens for a bit which was really fun... using it to focus in and crop an image in real time. However, the aperture was terrible on it so only good in broad daylight!

@@nnamdiakubuiro It's my first DSLR so I don't have much to compare it to..... but it's been fantastic. Extremely light weight. My wife has a Cannon 80D and it feels like a total brick compared to the A6000! After using the camera for about 8 months I really like it and highly recommend it for the price point, it's easy to use once you get get used to it.... images are sharp and clear with great colour. The electronic viewfinder is aaaaamazing when your balancing the exposure. Video is great. The iso low light photography is really good. Much better than my wifes Cannon 80D. I think combined with a fast aperture.... it'd be a really really good travel camera as it is feather light and slim.... you can fit it in a jacket pocket. It is missing a touch screen which is a bit annoying.... but this is a fairly budget camera. A big annoyance I find with the A6000 is changing the ISO with the wheel on the body.... it needs a wheel where the hand grip is.... I think they use it as a differentiating factor between the budget cameras and pro camera..... I reckon if you can afford it get the A6300 it would be a better investment for not much more money.... 4k Video.... weather sealed body etc

While having used both 70D and the 6Dmark2 what would you recommend getting? I’m pushing my 1300D to the limits and I’m looking to upgrade really soon since I have a trip to Paris coming up. I would like to know what you would recommend. Keep in mind that I’m on a (architecture)student budget ;) Greetings from a Belgian 3rd year architecture student!

on an architecture student budget: amzn.to/2JogEVR you could also go body only and pick two primes to go with it...I like the 24mm and 40mm...see this video for more details: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9CSarugus7Md30.html
