First broadcast 4 June 1989. Chinese troops opened fire on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square on Saturday evening. The collection of students and labourers had been occupying the site for several weeks.
Despite the outbreak of "unremitting gunfire", the protesters refused to leave. The BBC's Kate Adie reports from the scene.

Yeah this is definitely the case with a lot of Chinese people. Me, for one, did not even know about it until I moved to the UK for school 3 years ago. I was in denial for many days. This is why I am reluctant to blame Chinese citizens for the atrocities the CCP has committed. Like me, a lot of them are unaware of the truth, only seeing the facade the gov have created and are made to believe it completely.

True, in the 3.5 minutes she was talking, she never once gave her own opinion or tried to guess what other people were thinking or feeling. She just told it how it was: "this happened, then this happened, and then we were here, and then this happened". It's a boring way to tell a story (that's why books and movies don't do this) but it's the only accurate way.

It is brave until a stray bullet hits the unfortunate lady in her abdomen and she bleeds out in a foreign country due to the hospitals already being severely strained as a result of the protests and gets replaced by yet another reporter after a relatively short acknowledgment ceremony in her home country, never to be heard from again. Basically; if one is to report from a crisis region and one also happens to have people who care about oneself, one should never be incautious of the potential dangers of such a situation. What happened is of course likely to be something along the lines that she and her team entered China long before the crisis emerged and when it did, they of course immediately rushed to report on the developments. Yet, I really want to emphasize that protecting oneself is far better than being remembered for an idealized bravery.

I was at university in the UK and I remember watching this being broadcast live. The impact on the Hong Kong students in my university was devastating. One of my Hong Kong course mates cried non-stop for almost a day because of the naked fear that she felt, expecting that something like this could happen after the Handover in 1997. My wife, later became housemates in London with one of those Chinese students who had managed to be smuggled out of China into Hong Kong, and then flying to the UK to claim political asylum. She suffered shrapnel wounds in her legs from the attack, and used to say that she wasn't even one of the protestors as she had gone there to help provided medical care for the student protestors.

If you think the US gov and the CCP are about the same morally I think you're really mistaken Douglas Murray had a quote that says human rights abuses occur inversely to how much you hear about them. Its exactly because the US doesn't suppress its citizens that we hear all the time about how bad it is.

@Google user They didn't just let people die though. Forced quarantines in the way they happened in China are not realistic in the US because of higher individual freedoms. Protests in the US were overwhelmingly aimed against COVID measures, instead of the government doing too little. Furthermore, I don't think elevated racial tensions and certain systemic racial inequality are quite comparable to firing live ammunition at unarmed protestors or eradicating the identity of an entire minority group by forcibly detaining and "re-educating" them. All while completely disallowing their citizens to speak up any further. When it comes to income inequality, China does seem to put significantly more effort into reducing extreme poverty but overal income inequality is unfortunately very high in both countries

There’s much worse footage and pictures than this available. They cut out all the graphic stuff. There are photos of humans flattened like pancakes by tanks in Tiananmen square, bicycles they were riding flattened into their bodies with them, people with their whole legs torn off and the bones sticking out. This is why you don’t see this footage very often even in the Western world... Most of the stuff is too graphic.

@@thevault5828 Yeah. The worst part is they waited til the next morning and use fire trucks to hose all those flattened remains down the drains for easy dispose. Then they went house to house arresting those whose faces were recorded or snitched on and shot en masse. There are pictures of all of this on the internet the last time I checked years ago. Now Google and Microsoft have bent their knees and taken most of them down.

Six points to think about: First, you don't even know what you have said is true, you are assuming it. You don't have hard evidence. Second, there are governments who have killed much more people directly, for example, America in Afghanistan, Iraq. Or indirectly, the refugee in Europe dead because nobody wants to receive them, etc,. Third, you have to understand the complexity of this issue, if China goes unstable, there will not be hundred millions of people being lifted out of poverty, much more people will die. Forth, this is our internal issue, Chinese people have a more say than you. Fifth, your media does not care about the truth, but are crazily promote their idea about other countries and tried to mislead people. Populist in the western country has been a threat to itself. Sixth, I can get access to the information both inside and outside of our cyber wall, so actually, I have a much more all-sided view about the issue. However, western media is full of biased propaganda, which intends to devilize China Think about it, your sense of justice is being used

Not so good journalist though. They reported that they had seen a massacre in Tiananmen square while, in reality no people died there. Most of them were killed during the approximation to the square and there where also some deaths in the morning when the protesters tried to retake Changan avenue. The only reporters (the real freakin' journalist to me) that stayed in Tiananmen square during the night were from from the Spanish state TV (Televisión Española) and filmed how the few students (around 3000) that remained in the square left peacefully. It does not make the events any better but it shows to me that the BBC didn't have much rigor (same as now).

at this point, I believe, the volleys of shots were really common (since injured people were rushing to hospitals every second) and the shot was a bit distant, judging by the sound and flash. If it was near them, the camera would drop and everybody would run. at this point, they're just used to it and could care less if they're shot (I guess)

@@xblade11230 So how did the people die? Did they get stabbed to death? Even the CCP reported over 200 deaths. What about the pictures of the dead bodies and the videos of wounded people being retrieved? You don't hide propaganda from your people when they start believing it. You expose it to show their flaws. China should have more than enough evidence to debunk this if it never happened. But it did happen so all they can do is try to hide it. These people wanted more freedom and they took it from them. No they are taking even more freedom and they are scared of people seeing this and standing up again.
