We are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Charlie Chaplin's A WOMAN OF PARIS and its re-release in a splendid 4K restoration. This video looks back on the filmmaker's career and reveals anecdotes about the making and release of the film in 1923, through rare archival documents with commentary by Arnold Lozano of the Chaplin Office.

I did not really enjoy this film or the music that Chaplin (and unofficially, Eric James) later composed for the film. Now, this could have been the fault of the score, actually, because of how repetitive it can be. Unfortunately, the repetition most likely was due to Chaplin's health, and James was trying to remain as faithful as possible to Chaplin's style of music. Finding out that the wonderful Timothy Brock had created a new score based on unheard music from Chaplin has piqued my interest in seeing the film again. I will say one thing about Chaplin's score from this film, and that is that I love the main title, and how it is an expansion of the lovely piano music Chaplin performs in Monsieur Verdoux (1947) before his character murders Lydia Floray. I was always disappointed that this theme wasn't used more in that film, and unfortunately, just as little in A Woman of Paris.

@phonotical Not sure you are talking about the 2023 restoration with the new Chaplin/Brock score. So far, the new score is only available on dvd/bluray in France from Potemkine Films (since September 2023). Janus Films/Criterion Collection are giving the restoration a theatrical run in the US and the UK before setting a disc release date (UK and US premieres took place in December 2023). The only other screenings have been at the Berlinale 2023 and Cinema Ritrovato 2023.
