Our King, George the third inherited the throne when he was king of Hanover in the Holy Roman Empire. Britain and Ireland fought with Hanover in various wars such as the seven years war.

There have actually been German units in the British Army for much of the 18th and 19th Century, in part because the throne of Hannover and Britain were occupied by the same monarch. Famous examples include the Hessians who fought in the American War of Independence, King's German Legion who fought in the Napoleonic Wars, and the British German Legion who fought in the Crimean War.

Kingdom of Hanover, a german kingdom from 1814-1866, it's capital was Hanover and it was in a personal union with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until 1837 when victoria took the british throne, it ended in 1866 as a result of the austro-prussian war
