Aggressive Tendencies

7 жыл бұрын

Archspire vocalist Oliver Rae Aleron and Psycroptic vocalist Jason Peppiatt talk about their role as tech death metal vocalists, despite thinking the subgenera is losing some if its catchiness and songwriting in the complexity. They reveal their bands specifically try to avoid this and, in the case of Psycroptic, have even toned down the technical elements over the years to make performing live more enjoyable. Aleron explains how he’d rather listen to Dolly Parton than 90% of tech death, going on the rule that maybe 10% of any one thing is any good, though the pair resent the too-cool-for-school “I hate death metal” response they get from touring peers performing in death metal bands while wearing death metal shirts. They end the interview by revealing their Big 4 of tech death and opining why there isn’t really a right answer for that. May 20, 2017.

Totally agree with 'catchiness' being lost on a lot of tech bands. Thankfully Archspire has memorable songs!

Shame they substitute outright speed for odd time signatures and tempo changes... that's the best thing about tech death (e.g. Spawn of Possession and Blotted Science).

I still follow the rule that about 10% of the genre is really good and 90% is kinda garbage". I pretty much agree that this is a good rule to follow.

I've never really listened to slam... It's a bit of a stupid "genre". My comment is a bit misleading. It is more about the mastering of a genre. Obviously I don't think that the best 10% of rock artists are EQUALLY as good as the best 10% of Tech Death artists.

I agree with the catchiness statement and I really think Psycroptic's strongest songwriting is on their self-titled album. Although it sounds simpler because there's fewer but stronger riffs, it's still a cunt to play them
@hashbrownz1999
@hashbrownz1999 3 жыл бұрын
Hands down, I think their self titled is one of the best tech death albums written. Like I loved scepter more when I first heard it but their self titled is one I can keep coming back to over and over, and I constantly find riffs stuck in my head. I think lots of tech death fans are hesitant of any form of simplification or formulaic song writing so they're largely turned off by that sound.... but objectively, their opinions are wrong

Archspire is my favorite band, but it's hard for me to grasp that Oli doesn't like the same music that I do... Stay tech :( :( :( I do love the intimacy of metal shows that cost about $15. My hommie and I were one of the 10 people at an Archspire show and during the set Oli roasted me. He called me an orphan or something I couldn't really hear him. I bought a bunch of March from Tobi. Oli claimed the stage was on fire and went to go "take care of the fire" I called Dean Lamb chops and in the most little kid voice calmly said "That's my name". Looking forward to the new album!

at 1:32 Yes You Do Mean To Say It Like That.... dont be bland be direct about it. Because I would say the same thing. and I still say it that way... I've seen the scene in La change and then merge within each other. With the hardcore bands Down by the Bay clashing with the brutalness of South Central. They couldn't compete so when bands like Suicide Silence started coming out it was okay for them to start doing blast beats and not starting s*** at metal shows. Or i guess real metal shows at that time. Now it's cool because people have gotten over it, I think. But before I remember the same mentality with these core kids thinking "I don't listen to that s*** nah it's not for me". But then again when some of their favorite metalcore/slick hair over everyone's face kinda bands or whatever, started doing more double bass or blast beats or even low growls. They're like oh yeah!!!! let's take this s*** and make it our own and call it death core. LIKE THEY DID WITH DJENT!!! which has obviously been around way longer than when the name came about. I've been listening to Meshuggah and bands like Fear Factory and of course Pantera forever!!! and Da Funk!?!? lol BUT don't get me wrong there are some really good Deathcore bands but for the amount of time that it took to get there without them talking s*** about real death metal bands is ridiculous. some of these fans were So hypocritical. At least artspire and Psycroptic come from real brutal tech metal. It took so long for core kids to get over them selves and actually start playing death metal or even like it.. all they were really doing is just following the footsteps of All Shall Perish, Suicide Silence, The Faceless, job for a cowboy. the list goes on!!! I remember when all of these bands were nothing like what they sound now. MySpace days... I just find it funny that these core kids started acting all hard at every show trying to start s***. meaning at real metal shows when they're Fab bands were on the line up.. Especially around the time when the first Summer Slaughter tours started coming about. Now I like a lot of bands but I come from a background of Death, Cynic, Deeds of Flesh, Morbid Angel, dying fetus, cryptopsy, origin, skinless, necrophagist, of course, Some old school jazz and Flamingo stuff Paco de Lucía, Frank gambale, Chick Corea, etc which probably some have never heard of... one time at the first La metal Fest back in the 2000s in downtown LA. I remember one night was headlined by necrophagist and the next night by Suffocation. There was a bunch of Deathcore bands just starting out that were playing throughout the day and the fans literally cleared out when they heard necrophagist or Suffocation. Or even bands like cattle decapitation. just because there wasn't any Slam Dancing pits. REALLY???? this used to happen a lot. I was like what the f*** this is the real s*** here. now let's keep this clear I do like hardcore but the real hardcore grin shit. Terror, Infest, Madball, Throwdown, bury your dead, Nails, Nazem.. And what just trips me out is, how they're all trying to SOUND just like those bands now (Death metal). The only reason why I say they are all trying TO BE THEM is because they're all from an older age group now.. Back then they're obviously lot younger they had to be the same people. had a lot of friends that if it didn't have breakdowns melodic Maiden rip-off riffs, they weren't into it. Who else would they be ???? Anyways this is my rant. Don't take back what you said period at 1 minute and 30 seconds because a lot of them should have got over themselves a long time ago and now they're all balls deep in your music. Which of course you guys are f****** awesome I just saw you guys with Obscura and a few other Great Tech bands like "Exist".. I was pretty impressed. the LA Show!! That was a show that a lot of people needed to be at if they didn't know about tech metal. anyways psycroptic is a big influence of mine! always has been especially since "scepter of the ancients." you guys never disappoint man. keep it up I'm in this game with you guys. and one more thing the jamming of the notes again comes from the newer bands that all of us and came from a different background. Because I can tell the difference. it has gotten so saturated that even yes I do agree that a lot of tech death is just over done. Necrophagist was probably the last band that really changed the game, besides spawn of possession in my opinion.

Pro Tools killed it all. There aren't "legends" today because everyone is produced to perfection vs having to actually perform in a studio for a full take. Yes, tape splicing was available back in the day nut you still had full on guitar/drum masters that stood out.
