This is a short video of my CNC machine cutting the top plate of an Archtop Acoustic Guitar...thanks for watching!

Amazing. I can't wait to get my machine and get started on this, and the electric guitars I've been designing using the methods I learned from your instructional videos!

I am a little sceptical about the integrated braces. The braces are supposed to take up some heavy load from the string tension, but the fibres in your "braces" do not follow the braces. The fibres go across the braces. No luthier would make braces from wood with the fibres in this direction. The braces also have another function: they try to keep the top from cracking due to drying. I think you should be really careful about these integrated braces.

machined in braces is rather pointless and totally defeats the purpose of bracing.

Hello, please tell the maker in this video that his built in braces are pointless, and Thank you for agreeing.

Well I was also...but I have a guitar build with this going on about 1 year now, with .13's as strings applying heavy pressure to the top...and so far, no problems....I will keep monitoring it, and your concerns are valid, but I wonder what luthiers would have build if they had access to today's technology....just because "it has always been done this way" is not a good enough reason for me not to do this... we will see how this holds up, but so far, the results are great, and so is the sound!

Thanks Cyborg, awesome video and thanks for the incredible amount of information you make available to the guitar building public. Though, from the comments, there seem to be trolls even here! So many armchair ‘Luthiers’ telling you why your design won’t work! I love your comment about, well, you built it and it sounds great and the guitar is playing well for 3 years - seems like evidence is apparently not enough! I’ve built many acoustics (not arch tops) and I am totally into the maths and physics of it all, but I also played and performed professionally for 25 years. A lot of my favourite sounding guitars don’t pass any of my tests for what I ‘think’ or hypothesise should be good construction, but they sound perfect in their own way. Here’s to exact science - but in-exact ears of musicians!!

Thank you Stephen! Really appreciate your comments, and you are exactly right! Still no issues with this guitar, plays and sounds great!

It is a TeknoMotor.... Check them out, really good spindles. This is the 1 HP model, and I am using a Delta VFD to drive it.....you can also buy them from damencnc....really good prices and awesome to deal with....

So how did that work out, integrating the braces into the top face? Interesting idea. How does Gibson make 335's? Do the take a fla piece and form the curve, or do they carve it like you're doing?

wonder if those carved in braces are as strong as mounted braces with different grain ? would the one piece top with no glued in braces sound better?
@Tongdee7 жыл бұрын
Those braces have so much "run out that they would have little to no strength at all, in my humble opinion. But I could be wrong (haha) please correct me "If evidence proves me wrong. . To visualize this clearly cut crossgrain equal height, equal width "Braces" at the same angle to the grain as the video shows and "braces where every strand in the wood runs the full length of the brace from the same piece of lumber. Side by side clamp both to a bench in the same way 1/4 on the bench and behind the clamping force. Give each a pluck. Note the pitch and sustain. Attach weights to each in increasing amounts until they break. Record the results. Form a hypothesis. Invite peer review. Stop wondering as you will know.
@Tongdee7 жыл бұрын
I do like the Idea of using those "Carved in Braces" as a flat base for gluing braces with zero runout to (lower the height to aprox 1/16" thicker than the top but computer flat side to side) as fitting braces properly to a fully carved plate is time consuming
@cyborg2517 жыл бұрын
..yes, that would be an interesting experiment. Here is another: Create the guitar, play it for over 3 years, and watch for any issues? So far, this guitar is functioning and playing great. Top has good strength, and is quite responsive and resonant. Works for me. Your idea about using the carved in to then glue other braces on top is a fascinating one! I think that would work as well.....I guess when you build this, you will report back?

@michaelabel7610 жыл бұрын
I agree with Björn Gröhn. The inside braces need to be made seperate.
@cyborg25110 жыл бұрын
..You can easily do that....but I have NO PROBLEM with this bracing system, and the guitar sounds great! It has now been over a year since this build, and the guitar shows no signs of any weakness or drop in sound quality. Very easy however to add the braces separately after the top is carved on the CNC. Cheers!
@molinobeer11 жыл бұрын
Those integrated braces seem like a great inovation! What is your conclusion on quality of the sound produced by the top using that method? Is it as good as with glued braces?
@raykanoon77056 жыл бұрын
If you have a thick enough wood can you carve out the sides and top in 1 piece?
@cyborg2516 жыл бұрын
I would not do that...that would waste a HUGE amount of wood, and add hours to machining....not really the way to do it.....however, the CNC machine will do what you tell it to do, so yes, it can be done in theory...
@stevehinton53006 жыл бұрын
What machine do you use..?? Would you recommend that same machine or an upgrade??

Cyborg Neuromancer Planning on cutting solid bodies for guitars.... I would like to have one 24" x 48" or longer... what would a kit like this cost..?
@cyborg2516 жыл бұрын
Yeah...that size sounds right...Not sure of the cost of the kit, as I said, I put this together myself over the course of a few months. Good kits can go up to 4-5K. You can pick up reasonable ones on ebay, but be prepared to do some modifications. There are many folks over at cnczone that build their own, and some might be able to offer you such a kit...

Wow, that is awesome! What thickness blank wood did you begin with and what was the final thickness of the edges of the top?
@cyborg2516 жыл бұрын
I used the Benedetto Plans, and I think the edge is at 3/16, with the recurve at 1/16, going to 5/32 and then back to 3/16 at the center. I left them a little proud, so that I can fine tune with sanding and obviously tap tuning...

The braces need to have the grain running straight through them so they need to be seperate, This may be enough, but it is giving up a lot of extra strength.
@cyborg2517 жыл бұрын
I have been playing this guitar for years, and has not shown an issue....Another option would be to have the braces in a parallel config, as compared to X....or like you said, leave them off....easy to do with the model.
@Erowens987 жыл бұрын
yeah, this is good enough most likely. Just not something the perfectionist in me likes.
@klijnsmitguitars29798 жыл бұрын
Having the top and the bracings from 1 piece of wood is awesome!
@MrStudioCalifornia6 жыл бұрын
No, it's not. The grain of the braces should be straight and in line with their orientation. Even running them at a slight diagonal compromises strength greatly. Bigly, I mean.
@kriyaban1003 жыл бұрын
@@MrStudioCalifornia man, yes your way was the only one before cncs. Yes, we are using braces with different grain pattern. But, if this practice shows success ? Then f-ck it!!
