I did exactly the same thing and I remember this show. Also, do you remember Orson Bean ? He was a great talent, and very funny man in his own right.

I used to watch Carson with my mom who was a night owl. We used to watch in L.A. when the Tonight Show was on from 11:30 to 1:00 AM. No wonder I missed so many days of school!

At one point, it seemed he wasn't laughing so much at the jokes but at Rodney's non stop bringing up stuff which Carson had to be a set up man....like he was laughing more at Johnny trying to deal with dealing with Rodney.

Those were the days when entertainers went into the entertainment industry because they loved it. They would have been entertainers even if it meant they had to live on the street. Today's "entertainers" are in it just for the money.

@@jamesanthony5681 Obviously you are too young to remember him, he was an extraordinarily talented comedian, author and chef. Canon Ball Run movies, did the voices for multiple cartoon movies and appeared in a wide range of variety shows which included the Dean Martin Show. Hollywood legend.

@@kikionthetrailoflove7036 I'm old enough. I remember DeLuise on the Dean Martin show in the barbershop sketches, and in the Smokey?/Cannonball Run? movies with Burt Reynolds. In fact Dom & Burt used to come on the Tonight show together (promoting a movie, I guess), with Reynolds laughing uncontrollably at anything DeLuise had to say. Seriously, Burt would be on his knees laughing, and I used to think, wtf is so funny?? Crickets. I didn't know about the author and chef aspect.

Actually in the very beginning the tonite show was 1:45 minutes. Ed McMahon hosted the 1st 15 minutes.

Carson moved the Tonight show to LA in 1972.

Shon C You left out Orson Bean, who was a gifted storyteller, among his many talents. Told a couple of the funniest jokes I ever heard. All are missed...

guyfihi I tried to find a show where Rodney and Rickles were together, I don't know if they would work well together, but it sure would be interesting. Rodney pretty much did more standup jokes in his interview, while Rickles interacted with the crowd and the host more. Two completely different comedians, but both hilarious, and took over the show when they were on.

It wouldn't work, since they would both try to be the center of attention. One insults and the other one is all about self-deprecation... Just doesn't work since it's all going in the same direction.

2 genuine masters of comedy and timing without resorting to a steady stream of F bombs and gutter language!
