Can you believe they were all 17-19 yrs old when they recorded this album?? So incredible. And I really do think Matt Helders is one of the top drummers alive today.

Your lyrical analysis is absolutely spot on. That's the "certain" romance Alex talks about - not between people, but for the place itself, for his neighbourhood. "You won't get me to go, not anywhere, not anywhere". High Green is a pretty rough working class area of Sheffield, which was a city built up around the steel industry. While some areas of the city have since evolved and gentrified, others have been left behind to squat on a very typical North-England post-industrial poverty line. Kids his age didn't have much to do but scrap, cause mischief, chase girls and play music, and you'll hear that in all the songs off their first two albums. That kind of culture and outlook is not at all unique to Sheffield, but the pride and local specificity with which he references his hometown resonates with people all over the UK, because we all feel that way about where we come from.

I believe it also refers to the music itself, they're not making music for "new ringtones" but because there's a certain romance for the music.

Fake Tales of San Francisco is a great song off this album that does an excellent job at providing snarky commentary on the amateur music scene and nightlife during their early years.

I love that Alex sings with Sheffield slang.. Their early vids were shot in our local areas they were 'claimed' as our lads! 😂 It's so great that people love them. They're still the same lads. 💗

Also, you are right. Turner is romanticizing, vis-a-vis nostalgia or familiarity, a locale and its natural ambiance that really aren't romantic in the slightest, yet hold a certain level of charm to those who are "of" it.

I'd say the lyrics talk about british youth culture at the time, whether it's at a bar or just in general. Alex (the singer) just kind of sarcastically comments on all the little stupid or shallow things people do/did, observes it and kind of makes fun of it (the first album is basically full of these witty, sarcastic, observational lyrics about this topic). The last verse then acknowledges that he might scoff at the behavior in other people, but he 'gives it a pass' when it comes to his friends. - 'you cannot get angry in the same way'. What's notable is also the fact that this song concludes their debut so the last verse can also kind of apply not only to this song, but also to the other ones. I love the debut album, it's got amazing energy, fun tunes and witty lyrics - but their other albums are just as good and sound very different - it's one of the main strenghts of the band - you never know what's coming on the next record - As someone else mentioned here, it would be cool if you did a song from each album first so you could get a taste of their progression. (Seeing the abbey road poster I think you might like some of their later stuff too :P )

Loved the reaction to this song! My interpretation of the lyrics is more about brotherhood within a circle of friends. The first few verses they're stereotyping people they don't know and judging them harshly when they're not quite so innocent themselves, but that's ok because they have each other. "Well, over there, there's friends of mine What can I say? I've known 'em for a long long time And, yeah, they might overstep the line But you just cannot get angry in the same way"

Just found you guys and enjoying your reactions. The whole of the first Arctic Monkey's album is chronicling one night out, so the first track starts off with the anticipation of getting ready to go out and then onto pubs, clubs, meeting girls, run ins with bouncers, taxis home, the seedy late night etc, all seen from a very (Northern) British viewpoint

Time to kick it up a gear - May I suggest "DC Fontaines - Boys in the better land (Darklands version)". If you like the Arctic Monkeys then you should really dig this band. Its the next shelf above the Artic Monkeys.

Alex and his band come from Sheffield which is seen as the 'rough part' of England, kind of like Detroit I guess? Although there are rougher parts in England than Sheffield. The singer is saying there's nothing 'romantic' about the place like say London but he still loves his hometown and his friends. The song is nostalgic of Alex's childhood.

Alex Turner's social commentary of growing up on a Council Estate here in the UK where, as a product of their environment, gangs of youths aka CHAVS (Council House & Violent) wore their "Tracky bottoms tucked in socks", He refers to the violence, drink & drugs & says "y can see it's a little different around here" & "it's clear there aint no romance around here". He does backtrack a little though by as he's grown up with most of these people & considers them friends, so doesn't judge them a severely as others might

You just heard a freaking masterpiece and of course it's deep...a certain romance is THE MUSIC. Their making music because they love it, it's real, it's not for new ringtones. The whole album is an homage to being young, going to bars, making music, describing all that, but this, the last song ends it all perfectly, they love their hometown, and all the shenanigans but at the end of the day, its all about their romance with the music. A sly admittance brilliantly done. Arctic Monkey fans study them like you studied Shakespeare in college. I'd give you a D.

No one is going to say they love this town, but don't you dare say anything bad about it. These mugs will squabble about you. This is their home. It's a rough town. It's a non-glamourous town. But it is very homely.

being from the uk, and growing up in this kind of environment, the lyrics really resonate with me, maybe out of more some weird nostalgia for this then anything else, but to me, the lyrics are about Alex and his friends judging what we call chavs in the pub, for acting like knobs, before then acknowledging that the group he is currently with are actually similar in a lot of ways. it ends with Alex saying that he cant get as angry as he would with strangers for acting in this way, as the people in the pub are mostly people he grew up with at school and as a kid or teenager. nothing incredibly deep, but im sure any brit who grew up in this "chav culture" find a lot of nostalgia from this song

This song hits me so hard in so many ways, emotionally in high school when this came out, and physically recently when I played it on my car's sound system with a 15 inch subwoofer. 👂🎶

They were just kids when they recorded this first album. Only about 16 I think. Think Alex Turner was a few years younger than that when he wrote most of the songs too.

@@bentownsend4017 first album is great, there was nothing like it at the time. Gets boring quickly tho, not much substance to it. Gets boring quite quickly. It's rock music for teenagers

@@taz454 gotta disagree with you. To say the older stuff gets boring quite quick is purely your opinion. I’d imagine that most of the fan base would probably disagree with you too. I love Tranquility Base, but I’d argue A Certain Romance is the most complete song Arctic Monkeys have released so far

@@lukehodgkinson5062 yeah mate, totally my opinion. Personal preference I guess. Their first album is much more basic musically and lyrically, that's not opinion, that's fact. To be honest I've never even heard tranquility album, it's the only album I haven't bought. I'll give it a go at some point. I still love humbug. The fact most fans don't agree with me doesn't make them right 😉

I think tranquility base and casino is the only album that was more "interesting" than the first one. Honestly, from humbug to AM there wasn't anything standing out in an interesting way, they were still good tho.

@@intothemusic908 Not saying those are bad songs, but you may want to go chronological with the Strokes as well (who kind started hot on their first two albums and really spurred the early-2000s "garage rock revival" that Arctic Monkeys started out as a part of. In fact, the first line of the newest Arctic Monkeys album is, "I just wanted to be one of The Strokes/Now look at the mess you made me make." The subsequent Strokes albums have been sort of a mixed bag, with their newest being considered one of the better of the bunch.) The most famous song off the first Strokes album is Last Nite -- it's basically their "Creep," the one song that keeps getting radio play 20 years later, even though they have many other songs that are just as good if not better. "Someday" is a song I'd recommend off their first album. "Reptilia" is the most famous song off their second album, although both first and second have a lot of songs worth recommending. Third album, I like "Razorblade," other people might prefer others. "Taken for a Fool" is a good song off their 4th. The fifth album was kind of not too well-received, and the newest album the two songs @Steven Huynh recommended are both good.

A couple other great garage rock revival bands were Bloc Party (who are still active, although never reached the heights they started at; some songs I recommend off their first album are Banquet, Helicopter, Like Eating Glass, Pioneers, Congratulations) and Franz Ferdinand (also still active; their most famous is Take Me Out; many other great songs on their first two albums, and some good ones on their third.)
