Humbug is obviously their best albums. Most feeling, most emotion, best overall sound. It's dark, interesting with a perfect theme. Not too long, keeps you waiting for more and a better percentage of awesome songs. It's the first all around album they've ever made.

When Alex were a lad, he used to buy those polystyrene aeroplanes. You know the ones, where you got 3 strips that would slot together to make a hand held aeroplane that you could throw and it would glide through the air. Well, you also got a propeller for the front of it. One day, Alex and Jamie went to the corner shop for a 10p 'mix up' and an aeroplane to play with down the old quarry. But when he opened up the packet he discovered no propeller! So... He went back to the corner shop to speak to the keeper, "Propeller is missin' from this mr" he said. "There's nothin' I can do bonny lad... Sorry" replied the shop keeper. "But I bought it from 'ere" Alex responded, "Aye.. Well it must of been a bad batch. You'll have to take it up with Plane makers. Bugger off!" Shouted the keeper. Alex then ran home as fast as his legs could carry him. He proceeded to ring the number on the back of the packet. After explaining his situation, the Plane makers agreed to send Alex a new propeller. It would take 5 days to arrive however. After day 2, Alex and Jamie were very bored and getting impatient. Seeing this, Alex's mam told them to write a song about their situation. MY PROPELLER was born!!! And so, we are here, listening to My Propeller.. Not about a penis, but about a young boy wanting to play with his toy aeroplane down the old quarry.

Am I the only one who doesn't think this song is a sexual innuendo? To me this is like being in love with a girl who doesn't give you the attention you're craving. When the girl isn't around, you're depressed and de-motivated. "When are you arriving?" He wants to see her badly so that he can feel uplifted again, and the propeller allows him to start moving again and being motivated. Sure it can have a sexual meaning too, but I don't really like to think of it that way imo.

+Adam Sinclair I think it's about the effects of drugs. He needs someone to give him the drugs, or to start his propeller because it won't spin. AKA he isn't himself without taking drugs,
@callme_adam
@callme_adam 8 жыл бұрын
When you put it like that, it seems it could well be related to drugs too. 90% of AM songs are related to girls though, so that's why I assumed it was about a girl.

I've become a huge fan of Arctic Monkeys, but I'm questioning deeply why their fanbase is a bunch of damn hipsters. You either get the fans that hate other fans for liking "Do I wanna know" ( which is a great song, so like... are they wrong for liking it because its on the radio? And... can you honestly deny being a hipster if that's your reason? ) or you get the type that are like "This song is so underrated and underplayed." I see this on pretty much every song, even though this song has had 5.3 MILLION views. Please stop turning good bands into cults. Just enjoy the music.

Actually, Alex said himself that it wasn't about his penis. But I think I understand the song now; after it helped me through my exams, I developed a special connection with it. I reckon Derek is right and it's about how Alex needs a woman to "spin his propeller" and get him working again, to "coax him out his low", which could be depression.

love how everyone argues about what the song is about. Just shows the genious of alex's lyrics that there are so many different interpretations from people. personally i think its about him wanting someone to help him out of a low depressing mood, spinning his propeller and snapping him out of it.

Terrifically awesome track that is one of their finest in their career thus far, it has their incredible dynamic structure with music along with those lyrics, The Arctic Monkeys will always move forward surprising then get praised for it.

I love this song because it can be interpreted in a lot of different ways and it seems like Alex doesn't go into detail about the meaning to keep it that way. for a long time i assumed it was a song about getting a blow job. "make your descent slowly" is self explanatory "oil up those sticky keys" could be seen as lube up those hands "have a spin on my propeller" ....suck it. these could be seen as sex references. however, changing the perspective, i can also see this song being about drug dependency. "coax me out my low" anyone who's had problems with drugs know the depressing feeling of being sober, then feeling alright once they've got their bit. "it's a necessary evil" you feel like you need drugs but you know they're harming you. "when are you arriving? coz my propeller won't spin and i can't get it started on my own" the 'propeller' could be his creativity or motivation, and until his fix arrives, he feels no creativity or motivation to do anything. Once more, it could be about being in love with someone. "momentary synergy" could be referring to that moment you see the person you love, and it feels like you know they are the one, being in perfect synergy for that moment. "coax me out my low, sink into tomorrow, coax me out my low, and have a spin of my propeller" might be him wanting the person he loves to be around him to take away his depression and sink into tomorrow like nothing else matters. "it's a necessary evil" Love can make people crazy and do things they wouldn't usually do, sometimes more harmful things than good, but you need that love in your life, making it a necessary evil. I don't personally believe the toy plane story. The rest of the album's songs have similar undertones (obsession, love, sex and drugs) and its very out of place to have just one song be about his toy plane's propeller not working as a child.

I'm surprised : Arctic Monkeys just can't do bad songs ! All their songs are great ! From the first till last ! And Humbug is so much different from the first album...and let's not forget Alex's and Miles's side project - Last Shadow Puppets...just FANTASTIC !!! The best band ever !!! (for me at least)

The lyrics are amazing. I read up on it, and Alex described it as "A descent." This reminded me of a line from The Doors, their song Riders on the Storm; "Girl you gotta love your man/take him by the hand/make him understand..."

I love Humbug so much, I think it's so original. At first you might think some songs like My Propeller or Crying Lightning, or Dance Little Liar are boring or dark, but then right before it ends it explodes in a magnificent chorus and you think thank god I listened to the end...

‘He he the song is about a handjob’ Bruh the propeller analogy is more about the woman taking him out of his depression ‘coax me out my low’. A propeller is basically connected to the engine of a boat, hence the song is about needing his girl to get his ‘drive’ back

I don't think this song is about hand jobs cause Alex Turner denied that ‘My Propeller’ was about, erm, his propeller. He said: “If that was a euphemism, then I wouldn’t be saying that my propeller wouldn’t spin- ‘cos you wouldn’t wanna go shouting that out, would you?”

For me Humbug was the Arctics 1st album aimed at an international audience. The 1st 2 albums were totally British albums. All the songs on them are about British life & British people. That's probably why their 1st 2 albums are their most popular in the UK. Although when AM came out, that put the Arctics on another level all together.

letra en español Si puedes reunir la fuerza, remolcame No puedo aguantar la urgencia Tienes que hacer tu descenso lentamente. Y engrasar esas llaves pegajosas.
