Sahir Ludhianvi (8 March 1921 - 25 October 1980) was a popular Urdu poet and Hindi lyricist, who worked extensively in Hindi films. Sahir Ludhianvi is his pseudonym. He won the Filmfare Award twice, in 1964 and 1977, and in 1971 was awarded the Padma Shri. He was honoured with the issuance of a commemorative stamp on 8 March 2013, the 92nd anniversary of his birth. His biography, Sahir Ludhianvi: The People's Poet, has been published by HarperCollins.
Sahir Ludhianvi was born in a Muslim gujjar family as Abdul Hayee on 8 March 1921 in Ludhiana, Punjab in India. His mother's name was Sardar Begum. Sahir's parents had a very loose and estranged relationship. In 1934, when he was thirteen years old, his father married for the second time. At that time, his mother decided to take the bold step of leaving her husband, forfeiting all claims to the financial assets. Sahir's father then sued his mother for child custody but lost. He threatened to make sure Sahir did not live with his mother very long, even if that meant taking the child's life. Sahir's mother then found friends who kept a close watch on him and didn't let him out of sight. Fear and financial deprivation surrounded the formative years of this young man. His parents' divorce brought him and his mother face to face with poverty and struggle in life.
The house where Sahir was born, a red sandstone haveli, stands in Karimpura, a Muslim neighbourhood of Ludhiana, with a small plaque announcing its importance upon the arched mughal darwaaza - the only effort by the city to remember him.

Good work by Rana Yashwant. I wanted to hear something about Sahir from Sudha Malhotra, what was he about. I know it is difficult for her to express personal feelings but fans and followers of Sahil would like to hear about Sahil's story from her. I find too much of pain, exceptional pain in all of Sahils poetry, Sahil deserves more recognition and stories. Only Sudha Malhotra can do this. Sudha Malhotra is lucky to have been associated with such a gentleman like Sahil.

Whenever I see and hear about Sahir and his greatness I always appreciate and remember him. To me I often feel like he was like a farishta, an angel, a profet who wakes up my inner soul and tells me many things I would have never known without his teachings (for me).

अमृता ने साहिर को इतना चाहा, जितना कभी किसी ने किसी को नहीं चाहा होगा, साहिर को बहुत सारी बगावतें करनी पड़ती, या यूं कहिए एक सच्चे प्यार का हक उन्होंने अदा नहीं किया, 1 ओ मुस्लिम थे और और अमृता प्रीतम पंजाबी थी, अमृता के घर वालों ने इस रिश्ते से इंकार कर दिया जब, तो साहिर अगर सच्चा प्यार करते थे उसी समय वह कुछ ठोस कदम उठा सकते थे, 2 दूसरा-क्योंकि वह शायर थे और अच्छे गीतकार थे, तो उन्हीं शोहरत ज्यादा प्रिय लगी लेकिन इससे अमृता की जिंदगी बर्बाद हो गई,, अमृता पुरी उम्र सिर्फ साहिल को चाहती रही, तो मुझे तो नहीं लगता कि कुछ ऐसी इनकी कहानी है, जिसमें हम साहिल के प्रति सहानुभूति दर्शाएं, अमृता प्रीतम इसकी हकदार हैं,

Sahir saab ki kalam mein jadu tha , tu ye nahin banega vo nahin banega , insaan banega , par mein Bharath ki daath detha hon , duniya ke kone kone sey log aa kar sub kuch ban-jathe hai , sab ko godh mein lethi hai maiiya , hunar ki kadar hoti hai ... duniya mein bahuth kum jagah mein hoti hai .
