Our drone project videos show the older Arduino UNO R3 but you can also use the newer R4. For any of our projects you can click on the link in the description and it will take you to written instructions with a materials list on our site.

That's very curious. Why the downgrade for the R4? That seems dangerously fragile.

You'd have to ask about that one on the official Arduino forums, we're not sure, but in general it's good practice to use transistors to drive external loads. Microcontroller pins are not meant to drive loads directly, it just happens to work out that LEDs require a very small amount of current and are commonly used in beginner Arduino projects.
