outboard brands don't manufacture outside parts, they just re-label them. Finding the OEM (the real original one, Denso, Marelli, Misubishi, bosh etc) is the ticket. Usually costs around 30% for the original part if purchased directly from the original manufacturer before it gets in the hands of the outboard brand company. As in many industry you will find that the same part is being used by several companies. This way you have OEM but not at OEM price. I have done it for 40 years and never got stranded out in the blue. Look at the part and google whatever marking or label it's got on it to find the original. Compare prices and decide what is best for your application. Of course that does not apply to engine internal parts. if you are in that situation means you are one of the lucky ones who repair themselves so use that advantage, you are free to decide, the opposite is leaving your outboard (or whatever equipment) to your mechanic and give them full power of decision on what what to replace at the highest price on the market plus their handling fee, you're basically hostage. The best is even when they replace all bunch of parts (cause some don't have a clue) and then when the same issue occurs again they find a good reason to justify why it had to be replaced anyway haha so to say well don't expect me to dismantle it now- anyway the old one went in the bin it was in bad condition anyway and was about to leave you at the merci of Towboatus. yamaha or others don't manufacture fuel pumps, they might give specific specs to a manufacturer to start a serie if the part is not yet on the market. Sometimes i tried cheap (too cheap) like that Suzuki idle solenoid at 7$ thank you Jeff haha, that one never worked but it was bench tested before putting the boat in the water so no arm. Suzuki price 350$. Original factory 75$, that one has been working for over 4 years so will probably work as look as the suzuki badged one. Knind of exceptional someone running a marina like you will be open about that subject, thanks

All of you guys that think OEMs are making their parts 100% in house are delusional. The aftermarket drives the OEM/OES world and the majority of the guys telling you they are OE are not putting the same thing in the box that came on the boat/car/truck. All technicians marine/automotive or otherwise have careers because OE parts break. The trick is just choosing the reputable aftermarket companies.

I’ve been saying the same thing for years! Fun fact: Honda originally made piston rings (for Toyota amongst other brands) before becoming a car company of their own.

Who made it and where is not my concern. Let's say Mercury contracted FRAM to manufacture their filters; that doesn't mean they're being made to the typical, crappy FRAM quality. In theory, Mercury told Fram, "Make it to THESE specs, and put our name on it," and so, that means that when you buy the "OEM" filter, even if you know it's really made by FRAM, you don't know that it's "REALLY A FRAM," but you DO know that--whatever it is--Mercury endorses it. (That's a made-up example. I have no idea who makes filters for Mercury/Quicksilver.) As far as FSMs go (which I bring up because so many of the OEM parts all seem to be made by Carlton), I also assume that each engine manufacturer is contracting the fuel pump manufacturer to make parts to a specific quality and output specification, and I see no benefit to trying to bypass that in an attempt to save money, especially when our host pointed out that replacing just an individual pump for a VST in order to save ~$700 wound up frying a $1,200-ECM. You do the math.

Great solution. Just be conscious when buying non-OEM parts and it will be ok. If it hooks directly on the EMM/ECU then be really critical and prefer the OEM if available. If it doesnt its most likely ok to use non-OEM.

I go OEM on fuel and electrical items unless it’s just a re-labeled part. I go as far as contacting people who work for the parts company and find out the parts origin. Insurance reasons in the event of fire 🔥 or failure is another reason. Some companies will not cover certain things like auto parts in a marine application if an investigation is required for an explosion event.

Replaced both of my yamahas with a quantum high pressure fuel pump in the VST. Have put several hundred hours on them with no issues. You can buy 7 of them for the price of one yamaha one. A lot of oem parts are just rebranded. Aftermarket injectors are hit or miss but the bosch ones are what you want.

I quit buying parts from Amazon that indicate OEM because the amount of problems that I’ve had , I found that most of these are manufacturer reject parts that are re-sold at a greatly discounted price and most of the time I have problems with them therefore, I only go to the dealer for manufactured parts , as for aftermarket parts, I would consider buying them only if it’s from a company that has a decent reputation such as I hate to say it Doorman or TYC

One thing (as a past owner and tech at a shop) was if that new OEM part failed it was covered (parts and labor) and if it caused cascading damage that would be covered also. I was in a remote area so that same coverage was good at his home port. That being said I can say I have installed quality aftermarket parts,yeah you can tell. Fit and finish. If you have to modify to install the guy down the road may not be able to diagnose that mod. So yeah do your homework and for heavens sake tell the tech if you’ve done work. Hours of expensive diagnosis can be avoided with a heads up. Pride be damned. I would never chastise a guy for trying to save a buck. But don’t make our job tougher by not being up front about attempted repairs. Thanks in advance.

I work at a tohatsu dealership an i can say from experience with mfs25/30b and c models its walbro fuel pump only as i haven't got an aftermarket one to last or be reliable as the oem. even with the relay to run the aftermarket pump the pump are unreliable ( runing aftermarket pump without relay will cause the ecu to burn out as its batteryless efi and get ac power from stator and the ecu has an inbuilt rectifier that supplys power to run igniton, injectors, and fuel pump with is controled by a transistor and so the aftermarket pump draws 4amps and the oem 2amp with the extra draw it burns out the transistor and if you look at the stator the charge circuit is around the same size windings as the stator side and the max charge current at idel is 2 amps so there will be a voltage drop and ohms law said the rest )

Temken bearings USA, China. Ordered 2 of the same bearings, 1 came from China and 1 made in USA. They looked identical. Bring manufacturing back to USA and bring the prices to an affordable price.

Buy a Chinese ACU? The problem isn't the $36 bomb! The problem is the ACU. Big manufacturers do this to force us to buy absurdly expensive parts from them! In this case, try using the Mitsubishi Galant 2.0, the pump is the same amperage, same pressure. Just out of curiosity, in Brazil the government determines 27% alcohol in gasoline! Corrosion problems are very common here.

If you think its not chinese because its branded with an american sounding brand name, youre only fooling yourself out of pure ignorance. The brand names that sell for big buck are just buying from the same cheap chinese factories and then marking it up 1000%
@woodycooper7551
@woodycooper7551 7 ай бұрын
@@reeseman4408 I'll give you that OEM parts can be made in China. However the quality is much different. It's tempting to buy a $595 fuel pump for $169, and I did that. The cheap one was NOT the same, and it failed after four hours, just long enough for me to install it and use it once. Same goes for thermostats and sensors which do not open or close on spec., right out of the box. I'm convinced that they manufacture stuff to last just long enough that you can't send it back, or you won't bother to test it when you remove it from the box. I have multiple stories like this. China can manufacture stuff well, if given the right specs and QA, but they are at the same time flooding places like Amazon with garbage. They're even selling boxes that supposedly do something useful but in fact just light up an LED, and selling cheap scent vaporizers masquerading as all sorts of things.
