Lets figure out if having a bigger brake set up is always better for your stopping abilities! In this video we compare the stopping abilities of our RX-7 big brake kit compared to the stock calipers. Lets just say the results shocked us! Once again we've tried a bit of a different flavor of video and if you have any comments on it please let us know! we read everything you guys leave in the comments.

Insane production quality for such a small channel. The experimentation/conversational stuff is tough to do with two guys and a tripod but you guys are already pretty solid at it. Wonder if how the rx7 calipers would have done with a brake bias adjustment... Ive been budgeting out a e30 LQ4 build for a few weeks now, these things add up quick. excited to keep an eye on your channel and builds

I have witnessed this a lot over the years more pistons + more surface area , which usually = less stopping power , it is not that fact that bigger brakes will not stop you faster with less heat , they for sure will but the ratio between the diameter of the master cyl to make enough pressure vs 4x the amount of pistons / surface area , hydro boost is one solution .

Comparing apples and oranges with bananas for some of the other componentry. Unless you take everything - the rotors, pads, callipers, lines and master cylinder - into account, your test was unable to answer the question you set for yourselves.

For my E30...I used standard fit rotor upgrade..as well as quality pads, hoses and fluid...little Gretchen isn't LS swapped yet, but the brakes are so good...I'll probably keep the current setup.

Have you ever considered, that your rear calipers cause the problems in your RX7 brake Setup? When they're way smaller then your front ones, then the rear line is hydraulicly blocked, while your front calipers are still in need of some juice. I do agree though, that a master cylinder with a smaller piston for the rear (or bigger for the front) could fix that as well. ;-)
@slightlyMADcustoms
@slightlyMADcustoms 3 жыл бұрын
Good point. But no that’s not how it felt. It just felt like I couldn’t press hard enough when slowing down. If I was locking the rears I’d hear it. And probably slow down faster
@heikohorz2709
@heikohorz2709 3 жыл бұрын
@@slightlyMADcustoms the rears will not lock in your setup, due to the proportioning valve, or did you remove that!?

tell that to the "engineers" they say it doesnt matter, well since i got big brakes installed 2-3 sometimes 4 meters of stopping distance was added. but you also need right tyres. but i already had cup 2's so my brakes were sjit.

Not entirely sure wtf did you guys just did - but those OEM disks looked rusty af AND everytime you put in new pads, you're suppose to "run them in" at least a few decent miles ( of braking ) before expecting best performance :)

I run the rx7 calipers on my turbo e30 and they feel considerably better than stock in my opinion but i do run a brake booster and some aggressive pads
@slightlyMADcustoms
@slightlyMADcustoms 4 жыл бұрын
Ya the booster would really help! It’s just because it takes too much pressure to move that many pistons without the assist of the booster. Maybe a different master cylinder would work better for me

doing an s50 swap right now and bought got an rx7 bbk. but they dont fit with 16mm spacers and style 5s. i thought that i was absolutely going to need it and have to buy new wheels, but i guess ill just stick with the stocks for now till i get a proper m/c. thanks homie!!

Big brakes aren't for everyday grocery driving... the may reason it's big is for heat dissipation... soil there's no heat then the tires are the main factors for stopping... do a cross-country or track drive where frequentbrake is use then big brakes will be noticeable

Have you figured out what needs to be done to make this configuration work properly? Change a brake booster or master brake cylinder ?
@slightlyMADcustoms
@slightlyMADcustoms 4 жыл бұрын
For now I’ll just run the stock e30 calipers. I assume that a different master cylinder bore would help make clamping the RX7 calipers easier

Thanks for the video, I've been wanting to do the RX-7 swap for a while for the nice look but considering how much more power your E30 has and you have a better brake experience with stock, It's hard to believe mine would do better with Rx-7's.
@slightlyMADcustoms
@slightlyMADcustoms 4 жыл бұрын
The RX7 brakes certainly a good upgrade and will offer better braking and heat management. The problem with my set up is I have the brake booster deleted so I don’t have enough force to clamp up those big brakes. Another thing to consider is that brakes aren’t really matched to your Horsepower, they should be matched to the weight of the car and level of abuse. Since my car weighs about the same as a stock e30 and I don’t track the car. I’m not too concerned about factory brakes

Even the rx7 guys said this on e30 forum that rx7 brakes are really not that good and they put big brake kits as e30 guys do 😂 so really a dumb idea to put a brakes from a car that itself struggling with a same problem
