Travelling by bike efficiently and safely is a key issue in this mayoral byelection. So far we have heard from some of the candidates. Mark Saunders and Anthony Furey vow to rip up bike lanes on University Avenue.

The city is for everyone, not just for cars, it should reflect the lives of actual residents , not just for poeple who arrive everyday then leave. During the pandemic the city & downtown streets weren't dominated by cars, they all fled to Muskoka. Accommodating cars is a balancing act but, in the end , having streets with bike lanes is a highly efficient way for getting around downtown. Burning gas sitting in traffic is a waste of money & time. 0_o

Amsterdam used to be very car centric back in the 70s to emulate the American car obsession. It only then that people stood up fought against the demolition of their neighborhoods to make room for cars. Now it's more livable for people who can walk, cycle and take transit. Amsterdam identity shows that it puts people first, not being the bike capital, but by giving people options

The first lady is somewhat ignorant and I could feel her emotions. She probably isn't aware that we ride bikes all year round in Scandinavian cities and towns. Just like driving in snowy weather requires lower speed for safety, riding bikes in winter is the same. If you could drive a car in Toronto during winter, you'll surely be fine to ride a bike in winter too. Bike lanes hurting local business? Many European cities could serve as models for you, Toronto. Car-centric is an outdated idea. Put PEOPLE first and you'll all have a better life.

Disappointed that there was no addressing of the prerolled line that people can't cycle x months of the year... cycling is great in winter if you have maintained bike lanes and people cycle in the winter around the world. You can't cycle in the winter because the city doesn't bother cleaning the lanes to the common standard. Anyone who's biked in the cold would know that it's actually very pleasant because your body temperature and circulation increase and all you need is the regular winter accessories to protect your fingers and face from the wind.

And often, that's because people are parked in the bike lanes, so they can't be cleaned of snow and ice. Cyclists are treated as third-class citizens, let's be honest.

@kitchencarvings4621
@kitchencarvings4621 Ай бұрын
@@kyleg2027 No, sidewalks are for pedestrians. Streets are for vehicles. Remember, streets were for bicycles before there were cars. During the 1950s, people abandoned their bikes for automobiles. Now, things are changing again. There is a cycling boom with the high price of cars, insurance, and gas, and people are discovering that it is often faster to get around on a bike than to sit in traffic. If you build bike lanes for all ages and abilities, protected from traffic, you will see up to a 900% increase in people cycling, at least for shorter trips. You'd think motorists would be the biggest proponents of bike lanes with all the congestion now.

The space available must be divided into thirds. Cars get a third, Cyclists get a third, and pedestrians get a third. What could be more fair than that? Whenever I go to the city, it drives the point home that we must change. The traffic, noise, and congestion are ridiculous. 50 % of trips are less than 5 miles. Make cycling accessible, people will fill that third, and maybe the traffic will improve with fewer cars. For every person choosing to cycle 3 miles to the grocery store or 6 miles to the theater or restaurant, that's one less car on the road and one more freed-up parking space. Wouldn't drivers like 50% less congestion? Do they want to live in a much friendlier, quieter, cleaner, more vibrant, livable city? Because that's what they fight against when they are against great bike infrastructure.

they need to clean the bike lanes, cyclists have better visibility compared to cars so rolling through stop signs and red lights can easily be done, most deaths are caused by cars and not cyclists and our network of bike lanes is long from connected which means that cyclists constantly have to merge into multiple lanes of traffic which is not very convenient is it? if we want a sustainable future and let our kids learn how to cycle safely at an early age then we have to build streets for everyone.
@kitchencarvings4621

When we obey the rules, motorists get mad at us, trying to hit and throw things at us. The rules are that cyclists are allowed to ride on any road except where it is expressly prohibited, and we are allowed to use the whole lane if it is too narrow for a car and a bike to pass, which is 14 ft. I'm happy to have cars pass me if there is room. A cyclist requires a minimum of 7 ft. We must have space to go around obstacles and escape if some motorist tries to side-swipe us. But when we do follow the rules and take the lane on narrow roads or at junctions, we are accused of "hogging the road" and "impeding traffic." They'll pass us way too close, only to have to stop at the next stoplight. Just relax. We are both going to end up at the light together. Are you in a hurry to sit waiting at a stop light?

Friends, bike lanes are not a good thing. They cause more accidents between cyclists and motorists, our streets are much more difficult to keep clean, some bike lane areas are obfuscated from passing cars making it much more difficult to see traffic and vice versa, it also clog's roadways with heavy traffic. Cyclists should consider their safety as a first step and use side-streets next to main roads instead and keep in mind that the helmet law was invented to protect a brain that's functioning so poorly to begin with.
