Are bipods better than air rifle bench rest bags?

Whats the best filling for air rifle bench rest bags? here i try a few different common filling materials on my new rest bags. Hopefully i can find something a little more stable than the cheap bipods i often use.
the Airmaks katran isnt very stable on the bipod on account of its low weight.
with different fillings in the front and rear bag hopefully i can get it super stable to improve my precision down range.
the Anschutz 9015 and Air Arms xti50 are both a fair bit heavier and have stocks better suited to being shot from a bag.

I use bean bag fillers, cheep as anything, light weight, waterproof and warm to sit on in the winter if you're out shooting pests, no smell and no noise when you move about, they also shape to anything from a post top for a good rest to a wet cold dry stone wall to sit on, very versatile and you will never have to replace them, if they get a bit flattened down you just add some more

I used an extra large food bag as a liner then old pillow fibre for the ears, pack it tight, then dried sand for the base, no dust and easy to top up when compacted

I used some poly pellets from amazon to fill mine, I found them very stable and not even half as heavy as the previous filling (kiln dried sand)

I was given a couple of bags, they were filled with Airsoft BB's which do the job really well - I think they were leftovers etc as otherwise probably not the cheapest solution but they've lasted several years

Another great video. Thank you. Putting a plastic ziplock bag inside as a liner prevents the media soaking up water, and in the case of the rice from rotting. Will deal with the dust issue with the cat litter as well

I've been using aquarium gravel solid easy to mould but a bit heavy,so just ordered myself some beanbag fillers, going to give them a try

I've got split lentils in my bags. Still pretty hefty when carrying them but mould and manipulate quite well

I work in a plastic moulding factory and use the plastic pellets that come in the raw state before they get moulded. They are very good.

expensive to buy if you dont work in a moulding factory i was going to get some but thought sod it give some poly beads a go.

If you don't mind a little weight, Airsoft bbs make a very solid fill. And the fancy packaging foam you cut shapes and glued in fancy packaging either cut small squares or you can actually cut it mostly bag shaped and fill the rest with polybeads can make odd noises.

I’ve used none clumping cat little in my bags and whether it’s the type or make of little, or even the bags, I’ve not experienced any dust. Not ever tried sand but certainly wouldn’t use rice. Interesting test as always, cheers, Woody.

I like using cherry pits like the once in the pillows. pretty heavy as they are quite dense wood. Gives just enough movement. no dust ;-)

Do you have to eat all the cherries first? I didn't even know they had a use outside of the fruit.. I'll stick it on the list of odd things to try😉

I’ve been using rice in both bags for some time now with good results. Found filling more than you think you’ll need works best so have the bags really topped up. It’s surprising how much you end up putting in due to the rice settling in. And I keep my bags indoors.

If it helps - In the generic front bags they keep the ears low so that the bags can be used in BR comps where the rules prohibit lateral support ie gun must sit "flat" on the bag

You must live in Arizona or texas... :D Actually with our drought going on, it'd be interesting to see how much moisture the rice picks up... I use it in my filters for my guns... :D Bi-Pod much more versatile tho... if can, do both. :)

I had the same experience with cat litter, heavy and really dusty - like concrete dust - and now use bean bag filler.

the nuts granulate , that is used for ammo case cleaning in tumbler will work

I found the wooden pellet cat litter worked best for me, you also need to tighten the strap on the front bag to make it firmer

@@tillysgunstocks 😂😂 easily done 😉 it’s ideal to get it just right on a bench, gives a bit of freedom to move away with the rifle and put it back with minimal adjustment to the bag. Think it was a cracking video and it shows the limitations of the designs on the bags, I’d prefer a two part bag. Top part filled with something that will mould but not to heavy like cat litter the wooden pellets, and a bottom bag with heavier weight sand. But I guess it would just be bumping the price up

It's given me a few ideas using it, the bag could really do with either more external straps to tension it up,or even some ribs stitched or removeable into the left and right sides aswel as a partition internally.

Did the same, sand way to heavy, cat litter really dusty. Rice was great just need to get as much in a physically possible. Going to knock up a mini jack for the front bag just for fun. Good video though 👍

I found putting a thin plastic bag inside as a liner to prevent any dust escaping and keeps the contents dry.

Do you have a zip opening mate? Or just a narrow funnel type affair ? I like the idea,but it looks like it might be a bit of a mission with the small opening of this bag

Rubber playground crumb ( coloured shreaded tyres ) got it by the sackful at work , endless supply , not TOO light , not TOO heavy , just right ...

Shredded rubber? Try sandblasting garnet - 100% dry & zero dust, maybe a combo of materials

I've always been a bipod person. I have a cheap (fake atlas), a harris and a Tier one ATAC bipod. And to be honest, they're all as good as eachother for stability, but the quality you get from a cheap to an expensive bipod is night and day.

Poly beads from craft shops. 👍 Sand, cat litter ,and rice are ALL moisture attracters and will eventually start smelling and also rotting your bags. Because you use em outside and even if you leave em in in a slightly damp environment they absorb like silica gel satchets. 🤔🤔🤔

I tried the cat litter but it becomes very dusty. Sand is good but quite heavy. Rice is my personal choice.

The quality of the bipod is critical. I use a Harris bipod, but Atlas is the benchmark for stability.

I use toy filler in mine, no issues with moisture or dust not as quiet as rice when moulding to prefered position etc but happy with it but do prefer to use bipods.

Iv used rice but my mate used saw dust for hampster cages packed it in its keeps its shape whilst shooting and is lighter than mine !!

I've just ordered another bag funnily enough. I'm going to try recycled HDPE plastic pellets. They are sort of uneven sizes so hopefully will pack together nicely. I'll update when I've got it sorted out 😉

I use 2 bladders from a box of wine semi blow one up and then blow the other one up to max to fill the bag…obviously it’s lighter and easily packed away.

I filled both with rice , it's heavy to lug around but not to bad plinking in the garden. Prefer my bipod or porta aim to be honest

Benchrest rules stipulate that front rest must be flat and not have sideways support, and the rear bag must be filled with sand only.

Is it true that if you shoot comps the bags must be filled with sand? I roast my sand for an hour or so in the oven on a lowish temp before filling - wife loves it......not! Love the channel, love fishing and fancy one of your stocks!!!

Some rules and regs do stipulate sand as the filling yeah.best check with the specific rules for the leagues you want to run Bit of a random channel this one .. but always outdoors fun😉

Wow, weird. I’m currently carrying out the same comparison. At the moment I’m leaning towards a bipod with a rear bag but I’m not done yet. I’m hoping that I can do better. For the bags, I’m using Tesco cat litter and tbh, I’m not finding too much dust.

I'm going to bite the bullet and get a decent bipod down the line, my rear mono pod setup is fantastic , especially on the 9015 with the extra weight it's super stable. The xti just looks rediculous off the bipod so will use that off the bags for a bit. The bipod is probably the best around option but the sand filled front bag is super stable and I don't need to do anything to stop the gun canting, ie no unwanted pulse through the grip 😉

Brother, regular sand bag, tube sock filled with corn. Take your hand beat a V sand bag. Laying flat or on its edge. It will work great for you. That was painful to watch. LOL.
