A few days ago Pierre Poilievre interviewed a woman from Cape Breton, #Canada who had moved to #Nicaragua and the phrase "fleeing Canada for Nicaragua" was used. As someone who talks to people about relocation all of the time, this rings very true with my experience. I talk to so many Canadians who want to relocate, and live around so many who have.

One of the aspects of Nicaragua that initially sparked my interest was during the pandemic. There was no crippling lockdown like in many countries. I'm paraphrasing but I read the president said "the people must work". Consequently, no forced closure of businesses and locking people in their homes. Compare that to most countries in Europe, US/Canada and ANZ

Speaking of loss of liberty, how does the local government treat expats as opposed to locals? Nicaragua is ranked very high in the corruption index, and approximately 300 people were killed in the 2018 protest by the government. My concern is, what is stopping the Government from being heavy handed with expats?
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog 26 күн бұрын
Logic, history, common sense, attempts to be good people, desire for investment, lack of reason to do that... you name it. What stops any government from suddenly doing crazy things? Not a lot, honestly. What Nicaragua has is a history and tradition of good behaviour and nothing, outside of North American propaganda, creating any cause for concern. It's a fair concern to have anywhere in the world. But it's one you can't apply just one place. Where are you more likely to be treated with a heavy hand, the US or Nicaragua? No one who has any knowledge of both would ever suggest Nicaragua. The US is far more risky, and far more heavy handed already. So your question is absolutely valid. But you have to ask it about every country you live in, or might live in. And when rubber hits the road, Nicaragua is a major draw BECAUSE it is among the least likely places to be heavy handed. It has never been so before, assuming it will magically turn into a US/Canada type country suddenly and be totally different than it has ever been without any reason to do so is illogical.

Up until 5-9 years ago, your list made sense for the reason why Canadians would relocate or retire in Nicaragua. 1. Cost of living is out of control. Even though I am considered well to do, my pension and investments will be just enough to “live” ok, as opposed to “thrive”. 2. Weather. I’m done dealing with snow/ice and short daylight hours between November to March. 3. The ongoing political crisis is nothing short of catastrophic. Our freedoms have eroded too much for me to stand it anymore.

Very little censorship, nothing that would affect an expat. You just can't be involved in politics that aren't your politics (which no one should be involved in anyway, tourists to Canada shouldn't be attempting to influence Canadian politics either, for example.) The lack of censorship here is actually a big deal. We immediately have to be cautious about what we say once we return to the US. But not here.

Same in the US. They don't censor you the old fashioned way. They just control the "volume" of what you see and hear. So you can basically say antyhing you want, but they control who can hear you or how much of you they hear. It's far more effective that complete censorship. MOre elegant and modern. Wow, Sarnia! I was actually there maybe eight years ago.

My wife won't leave, at this stage, nor will I, since all of our kids are having kids themselves. So lots of grandkids in the making. All what you hear of in Canada under Justin Trudeau is absolutely true, it's going to happen everywhere far sooner than any of us, can ever imagine. Eventually, Communism mixed with Marxism and Islamism with other Isms is going to sweep the earth. Our only chance in this life, and in the life to come is to put our hope and strength in our lord and savior Jesus Christ. Anything else is unstable ground it's that simple folks. We are entering into what the Prophets of old and Jesus Himself predicted for thousands of years, that would happen in all the Nations prior to his coming, it's called the Great Tribulation. We are seeing the very beginning of these turbulent times unfold before our very eyes folks. No one wants to hear it, but it's true. It's time we all put our houses in order. No ifs ans or butts that's what were seeing unfold before our very eyes.

Hey Scott, I'm in Toronto and would be happy to discuss the feelings here on the ground. It's a giant country and not everywhere has the same problems but I will say that we are generally feeling more "squeezed" than we have anytime in recent history. I don't have a sense that Toronto is any more dangerous than it has been in the past. This is an almost uniquely safe city and suggestions to the contrary tend to come from people that don't live within the city proper. With that said, My wife and I are absolutely considering Nicaragua. We visited a few years ago and loved it so much. I decided nearly immediately that Nica is the place I most want to come to for retirement (perhaps sooner). In the end, the calculus is more than I could probably address in a comment section but again I'm happy to chat more.

Loving your content, Scott. My wife and I spent nearly a year in Nicaragua (SJDS) after leaving Canada in summer 2021, part of a big influx of Canadians flooding into the country at that time. We ended up moving on to Turkey. A big negative of Nica residency for me is the requirement (started in 2020 or 2021, I believe) to renew your residency card every six months. The talk at the time was that the rule wouldn’t last, that it was a short-term, knee-jerk reaction when the govt did a welfare check on expats during C0vid and found that many were not living at their registered addresses. But it's now four years on and the rule is still in place. What’s the current word on this? Any talk of the govt easing up on this requirement?
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog 26 күн бұрын
Thanks! The issue you mention is for residency only, which likely wouldn't apply to you (or many reading this.) Watch my countless videos breaking down the myths of residency and the false belief that people have that they need the residency process. It's not from 2020, it's from 2023, people who have done it have only done it once or maybe twice at most so far. It's very new. There might have been a renewal back in 2020, that is absolutely gone. Renewals are five years typically now. My guess is you are seeing one rule from 2020 for COVID that went away (renewals) and a new rule that just went into place (reprints) and seeing them as one continuous thing, but it's two quite different things with a break in between. It's not renewing your residency, that's completely false information from scam lawyers. I've heard this a bit from the people talking to the crooks in SJDS - they make their money on false info. It's just a need to reprint your cedula card. Still super annoying, but again WHO needs to do this, not many. You need to look at the full picture, it might be a problem for you, but really check, because normally it isn't. The requirement isn't going away for people with those types of residency, at least not in the short term. But it might get easier to deal with soonish as new capabilities are rolling out across the country for government offices. Fingers crossed on that. But that it is a huge pain is one of the reasons I constantly list, now that it is in place, that you need to consider not getting residency and I break that down in all my videos from the last year.

I'm Canadian and I have been to Nicaragua 7 times (the first 14 years ago) and the last time 2 years ago. I still like it, but I liked it more in the years past. Slowly with social media places get bombarded with foreigners (just like everywhere) and places slowly change (usually for the worse). It's a very cheap (but poor) country to visit and very safe overall. I have visited the large majority of Latin American countries and Nicaragua still remains among my favorites. It's not for everyone however. I would say it's not a place for those who hate to learn another language (Spanish in this case), only like 5 Star accommodations (very little of this currently in Nica), have a difficult time looking at poverty (Nicaragua has a lot of it, (although things are slowly improving), and hate an extremely slow pace at how/when things get done (Nica-Time can be frustrating at times). If none of those things are a problem for you than visit Nicaragua.

We are running away from a global problem... it will reach the smaller countries in time... no place to hide. Resist. Go down standing up. As the world burns, do we really want to keep running away? Yes, Canada is struggling. Frankly, we did it to ourselves. But, the human trait is to not take responsibility for the messes we creste and, worse, to point fingers at others. Then again, with children, its hard for families not to want to avoid the Hell coming our way.

What do you feel Canada is done that smaller (or larger) countries can't avoid? Canada is a small country, not that much larger than central american countries and much smaller than many LATAM countries. And it's not running away. You don't fix problems by contributing to them. If Canada is doing something bad, then the way to stand up to it is to stop empowering it. Staying put is one of the most minimal ways of fighting. Leaving is the true vote, the true action against. In the the US, where votes mean nothing, the only real voice you have is "your wallet." If you don't vote with your wallet (tax dollars in this case) then you did nothing. Or moreso, you are giving your tax dollars in support of what the Canadian government does. Relocation is the opposite of running away. It's making a difference.

It is not easy to pack your belongings and move across borders, but WEF already stated that they expect massive global migrations, as they recognize the effect of their actions, and in the end we will end up with West/WEF and East/BRICS, with no trade between, and end up in Canada not being able to purchase healthy bananas, because the border, police and propaganda will not allow it. However, I'm not so crazy about the Philippines. To be honest, there's 2 things that have soured me on the Philippines.Number one is the natural disasters including typhoons, one which destroyed the house.Second is the fact that it seems like most locals in the Philippines look at a foreigner, especially a Westerner, as a walking ATM and I just don't like that kind of feeling.I don't like being stared at.I don't like being looked at like I'm something special, if that makes sense. I'm an intorvert and I do not like to be the centre of attention at all. The questions I have are; 1. what is the natural disaster situation like in Nicaragua? Are they prevalent? Are there Earthquakes? Are there volcanoes and Hurricanes? 2 How do locals view expats and foreigners there? Are they looking at them as normal people just trying to retire and live their life?. Or are they looking at them as something like a walking ATM or something? Do they have a colonial mentality there? Thanks!

@ScottAlanMillerVlog 22 күн бұрын
@@ferencfoti5541 So imagine if you stayed in Canada but there were no truck driving jobs. While unlikely, that could happen. What if AI drivers become mandated (that's actually expected someday.) Your situation will be the same, but with super high cost of living. You have the best possible situation in coming to Nicaragua: the ability to live in the best place and unlikely ability to work where it makes sense. Even if you COULD work in Nicaragua, that makes no sense. Pay scales are so low you'd realize it would be impossible. A truck driver might make $700/mo. Maybe Probably not. So whether you can or not, isn't relevant, it wouldn't be a viable option. Under no condition would you want to take that option. So it's a matter of figuring out what career online you want to do and going for that. The great thing is, is that you don't need anywhere close to as much money working FROM Nicaragua as FROM Canada. For one, you often get to live tax free. So that's a windfall right there. Nearly half your paycheck just appears. And the cost of living is fractional, and the purchasing power parity is super high. Often you can live better on 25% of your old income (or less!) So finding a job online that you can do, and that includes every possible field, everything has something online these days, or otherwise remote (it could be by phone, not computer, or similar) that pays less, but still more than say 25 or 30% means you can likely work less, and have more buying power.

@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog 17 күн бұрын
Nope, that's why it's such a big deal. You "just come" assuming you are from the US, Canada, or EU. There's zero paperwork for your first... year or years. And then only sometimes, must you do anything at all. The median average person who moves here permanently never has to do anything. Ever. Nothing. But if you fall under certain conditions then you eventually, but only after already living here for a good amount of time, might have to file for a special visa. But it is outrageously cheap and as long as you aren't committing crimes, I've never heard of someone having problems getting it. It cost almost nothing for that paperwork and there is zero "waiting" because you only do it after you are already here. It's literally easier to move to Nicaragua than it is to continue living in the US or Canada.

That Nicaragua totally pushed back against the US drug trade and gangs and stayed say while nothing around it managed to do so was a massive black eye on the US and they hate how embarrassing it is when people find out that separating themselves from the US has made Nicaragua a paradise that can provide more social programs like roads, Internet and healthcare with nearly no budget than the "richest" country in the world can do. So promoting the narrative of danger and cartels is critical to the US (and Canada gets swept along.)

I watch your video and you have a 20ft cement wall in the back yard. With rolls of razor wire. Then you cut to the front yard. You have have a 12ft steel bar fence a round the front yard. It doesn’t look to safe to me 😂😂

That's your North American context. You probably have to lock your doors and close your windows, right? Well that doesn't sound safe to a Nicaragua. Our doors are wide open. WIDE open. That wall is the only thing that keeps COWS from wandering into my house. Also, in Nicaragua we worry about people hopping a wall and swiping our laptop sitting on a table. In the US or Canada we worry about an armed invader killing our families. Walls stop our laptops and cell phones from disappearing. If you consider pick pockets to be a "danger", then Nicaragua is dangerous. But as an America, that's an inconvenience. "Danger" refers to bodily harm. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f69-hLmlzszZj4k.html

Until you feel comfortable sleeping with your house literally wide open, doors actually open so that animals can wander in and out (my dogs do), you're still in a level of "feeling unsafe" that we don't experience here. That's the real test. Also, unlike the US, we don't have guns. The US only doesn't have razor wire EVERYWHERE because the risk of being shot is SO real, even if you just knock on a door to sell girl scout cookies. Trust me, coming to Nicaragua will change your CONTEXT of what dangerous is.

If there actually something giving you more buying power in Canada? You have to earn something like 4-20x (real numbers) more in Canada for the same standard of living. Doesn't take much to earn that much less, especially if you end up tax free.

I don't know Margaret, I left the US a decade ago and am pretty high on life. I've loved every minute of every country I've lived in since leaving the US (7 countries.) It's kind of miserable to tell people that your country or fellow citizens or taxes or war or economy or safety can't make you unhappy. They certainly can. That's why travel is so important. People who explore the world are generally much happier, and those that realize that they don't have to go back and can choose their own path forward are generally much, much happier. Nothing more miserable than feeling that misery is unavoidable and that you are trapped inside of yourself. Maybe changing countries won't fix what makes you sad. But not attempting to fix what makes you sad definitely won't fix it. Change is a first step. Even if the country you are in isn't the source of problems. But in a case where your country is stripping liberties, taxing you heavily, not providing good healthcare, treating you like you have no voice, supporting foreign policies that weigh heavily on your conscious... then NOT leaving is basically guaranteed to make you miserable. There's no reason to try to talk people out of improving their lives. Even if misery ends up not being solved by having lower stress, lower taxes, more spending power, better weather, more freedom... it's definitely not going to get worse because you improved your life.
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog 27 күн бұрын
I think the thing you are saying is basically... if a change can't guarantee a 100% fix, then don't do it. That's horrific decision making and whoever has told you that, isn't your friend. If you are unhappy, you don't avoid "improvement" just because it doesn't make you completely happy all the time. That's a very toxic mentality. And honestly, that kind of toxicity that is preached by North American culture is exactly itself a reason to get out. Get away from a society that wants to harm your mental health to create a false sense of being trapped to get your tax money and labor.

You seem bitter than someone might find lower cost, more freedom, warmer weather attractive. How can you address the issues in Canada by "watering your own grass?" It's odd the way you chose to interpret my comment, we are all individually limited by our ability to perceive reality. The wisest thing one can do is to learn to be objective. Let me put it this way: everybody loves a good party, as the party winds down people start to leave, there is always a mess to clean up but only a handful stay to help clean the mess, in my experience it always seems to the same people that stay to lend a hand understanding that they had a part in creating the mess. Most leave assuming someone else will take care of the mess everyone had a part in creating. This is what I mean as duties. I understand everyone wants to be free but we need to first notice that our history is about slavery and we live on farms with fences we call borders. Some farms treat their livestock better than others. I m not suggesting to act like a slave but rather to objectively perceive reality separated from your feelings (ego). We all have our part to do in braking the chains, to me it seems wiser than running from a problem no one can hide from.

Hi I think is a socialist country to invest is not a good idea cloud be taken away from you!! Think twice
@ScottAlanMillerVlog
@ScottAlanMillerVlog 27 күн бұрын
ACtually that's a great reason to invest in it: socialism and buyer protections. Systems like the US and Canada have prominent eminent domain and money talks. In socialist systems, the goal is to do what is right for the people. Socialism encourages the strong property laws that Nicaragua has and the US lacks. Nicaragua has a strong property protection system and the safety, compared to the US and Canada, of your investments are a great reason to invest here. HOWEVER, investing has absolutely nothing to do with the topic. Why bring it up? You don't move to another country and just invest. That's crazy. I have video after video explaining the totally awful business logic that it takes to do that (if you plan to make money.) If you believe in the Canadian economy, as a Canadian, your best scenario is to invest in Canada and live and spend in Nicaragua. As a Canadian you have nearly no likely knowledge to make you a viable investor in any other country (this is not unique to Canada, immigrants make bad investors, they don't know what is needed or how things work.) So while your logic for investing is backwards and shows a "manipulated by Canadian marketing" response, the result is correct. But what does it have to do with the topic? Why bring it up unless it's just a fear response of people finding out how good the business environment is in Nicaragua? It sounds like something you'd say if you were afraid and didn't want people to leave. As an investor in both the US and Nicaragua, you certainly aren't going to make me think that I'm safer in the US. That's just silly. Those of us who live here know how much more stable property ownership is here. And REAL business investors don't panic when they hear "socialism", they look for it for safety of their investments. Most of Europe is socialist, for example. And they look into property concerns, they don't operate on random rumors that are at arm's length (e.g. random thought that some forms of government must automatically do their opposite of their mandate at random.) So who is the comment for, really?

I don't know what you are trying to ask here. I think you are trying to ask if Nicaragua has good civil liberties and respects people of all types. If that is what you are asking, then yes, Nicaragua certainly has more civil liberties than the US or Canada and has none of the weird "concerned with other people's preferences" obsessions and intolerances that so many in North America have. Most North Americans look to this region for more personal freedom, not less. If you are looking for less personal freedom than the US and Canada have, you're best bets are central Africa or the Middle East. Latin America and SE Asia tend towards higher levels of personal freedom where "if it doesn't hurt anyone", no one worries about what other people are doing.

Once Honduras was able to provide vaccinations over the border and the population surged over the border to get vaccinated, the pandemic practiced ended overnight.
