For what its worth, Landwind was using the original Mitsubishi 2.4liter turbo motor. Definitely more reliable than land rover

I'm a Chinese petro head and we're all hate that shit lol. Unfortunately few years ago one of my neigbour bought a pink Lifan 320 that smiley mini and everytime I dove home and saw it I feel disgusting.... Luckly a few months ago that Lifan company finally bankrupted. See, China got a lots of ppl but not everyone are petro head or know about cars. But some just want to buy a car and those copycats are cheap and they're actually a "car". That shitty smiley mini just cost half of a Golf in China. And check out one more hilarious knockoff: the Zontey SR9 lol a fake Porsche Macan. And some suckers bought the SR9 and change all the badges to Porche to cheat girls. True story lol

China do have a lot of good cars but thanks to those copycats manufacturers most of the foreigners think that’s all we got. And you know how western media works most they just wanna see how shit we are like 20 years ago. Even some manufacturers like Geely, BYD and Nio they’re having good designers now (BYD’s chief designer is from Audi) but foreigners still will try to find some parts are “copied” because they think that is a must.

6:49 There's also this thing called badge engineering. US car companies sold basically the same car with a different nameplate to different customers. Eventually the customers found out that their Cadillac is actually a Chevrolet Caprice wearing a fancy suit. Even today the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade are mechanically pretty much identical.

Yeah mostly GMC and Chevy vehicles are same under different names and slightly different styles. Our company bought GMC and Chevy 3500HD models in 2021 and from inside no one can tell the difference without looking at the logo on steering wheel

Another example is the BRZ, the FR-S, and the GR86, which are all the same car.

Take for example, the BRZ and GR86. Both share Subaru's FA24 boxer 4 with Toyota's D-4S fuel injection system and body styling and each company manufactures their own badged models for their own retailing.

My favourite knock off car is the korean asia rocksta, it's pretty much a jeep renegade cj5 front end attached to a suzuki samurai body with a 1.8 liter mazda engine that was later sold under the kia badge... shit's hilarious😂 but overall a dependable vehicle (I met an old lady that bought one many years ago end still daily drives it), it was used as a korean army vehicle too

The interesting thing about these 4-cylinder motors is that a significant number of them can trace their roots back to an old Mitsubishi engine that the Japanese company has licensed to a number of Chinese automakers (and I suspect there are a few who did not pay the licesing fee).

So here's a fun fact: BYD, who built the CLK knock-off, now build Electric Bus drivetrain and chassis combinations for the most popular all-electric Bus configuration in the UK, the BYD ADL Enviro200EV. They have been in daily service for several years already, and by all accounts, they're pretty solid. Drivers like them, operators in the heavily-congested capital city London have purchased them, and they appear to be getting on not so bad.

The Chrysler 300 isn't really a knock off of the Bentley, the same guy that was a lead designer for the design firm, made the body design for both cars as well as the 2004-Current Dodge Chargers. So can a car design really be considered a knock off, if the same person designed it? 🤣

Interesting.. like musicians, designers will always have a certain style no matter who they're with. So I definitely wouldn't count this as a copy. Boston whaler, edgewater and Everglades all have similarly because of the one man.

@@Crashed131963 there is something to be said about having a lesser number of larger cylinders versus a larger number of smaller cylinders. The little 4 cylinder tractor motors manufacturers are putting in cars might be a bit more harsh then the 6 cylinder variant but if you can get past or even come to enjoy that frenzied 4 pot badger growle when you step on it. The benefits out weight the disadvantages.

The Landwind situation didn't work out so well for the foreign companies. They won the verdict but then the Chinese public got mad at them for picking on the little guy and ended up costing them more then allowing the knockoffs to continue.

The other factor, not considered here, is the restrictions on engine capacity in China. Most of these knockoffs have smaller engines... because the Chinese can't run a higher power engine without financial penalties. Chinese colleagues in automotive explained to me years ago that if only international manufacturers would make for the Chinese market... they'd make a killing. Because they choose not to... you get the knockoffs as average Joe in China can't afford to own the higher power equivalents.
