Are Colour Pencils EASIER On Toned Paper?

I can be a bit stuck in my ways sometimes, and for as long as I can remember I've drawn all my colour pencil work on white bristol board. As an experiment, this week I'm switching it up for toned paper to see if it makes a difference!

I LOVE toned paper. Another thing about it is that I don't feel as much of a need to completely cover the paper. On white paper, if it shows through it makes the drawing look unfinished, but with toned paper it often adds a great touch to the drawing. For this reason, I love using really bold colored paper for pencils, Neocolors, pens, even gouache! When I use Neocolors dry on, for example, the smooth side of Canson Mi-tientes in a really bold color, the result kind of looks like a woodcut. I almost never wet the Neocolors, because I love the effect of the toned paper showing through. As you say, the media you use does indeed shape your art. It's not that one is better than another, but the techniques you use with some kinds of media won't work as well with other kinds. If I use Neocolors dry on white paper, it looks terrible!

Strathmore do a mixed media version of this, which is the same paper but much heavier and thicker.

I like to bounce around with different papers and different medias also. I've found with certain pieces I can achieve a more realistic rendering than others based on the paper and media. I've come to realize that not all my work has to or needs to be realistic in appearance as often the "pebbly texture" of certain paper will demonstrate clearly that it is an artwork rather than a photo and I believe that is a consideration to keep in mind.

I really love the Strathmore toned grey paper. In fact I’ve been trying a portrait on Bristol board and I am noticing a difference

I’ve just swatched out a prismacolor portrait set on Bristol board and also on toned paper. Really interesting the difference of the colours on different bases.

I use and really love springhill bristol vellum light grey and white . It has a nice texture without not like boards. It gives me smooth gradiants and can take many layers

I really enjoy watching you and getting new ideas . I use toned paper like that very little. I've been using pastelmat with colored pencils now and I like it so much it's hard to go back

Each exact paper is different. I recommend trying lots of paper, changing materials and techniques to adjust to what’s best for that exact paper. I also recommend mixed media and putting an under layer in watercolour or pan pastel (if not concerned with lightfastness alcohol marker) this saves a LOT of time and fills in the white or undertone. I recommend trying new things joyously and with an open adaptable mind and enjoy yourself. Still if you have a favourite that’s ok too!

Hi Gemma, I have used this in the grey tone paper and it was quite nice to work on. I don't know if I missed it on your video but you can use either side of the paper. The reverse side is smoother and this is the side I used, it does make it easier to make it smoother. Hope this is helpful. Happy drawing, love your videos.

I have used toned paper for just practice and tasting out and it blowed my mind. toned paper and colour pencils are The Best Combination I've ever seen plz keep your patience and make some colour chart before you start a drawing on toned paper i think then it will be easy for you

I find that wax pencils like prismacolor tend to blend better on that paper. Also caran d ashe luminance are really good too and both work well together. Can you do a video on this paper with these brands please? Would love to know your thoughts.

I’ve bought a pad of toned tan, it’s new for me to let the mid tone on paper to show itself and be part of the composition

Try Hahnemuhle Dessin 150gm/2 paper! It's one of the best, if not THE best "drawing paper" works wonders with color pencils!

I'm too new to be stuck, but I just ordered some Strathmore mixed media boards and aquabord to experiment with solvents for pencils-as-wash-yness. Maybe it's "play with a new toy" time for all of us?

Yes I have used grey paper alot with graphite pencils and white charcoal. Not a professional like you but good results. Harder with toned paper. But recently used watercolour paper for graphite drawings Different result but I liked it also

I’m brand new to Colored pencils and used to using watercolor. I did a blue vase on blue toned paper. Had trouble getting a smooth blend but I’m sure I went too dark too soon. Do you ever use blending pencils?

I draw an eye with Strathmore Toned Gray 400 series, 80 LB. 118 gm, a little sketchbook, 5.5"x8.5" This paper has a medium thickness, soft texture, similar to cotton papers. By the way, it's a medium surface. What I can say is, that it gave me a bit of difficulty to add more layers, and there weren't that many, maybe... 5 layers... I don't know, I think so. But I had to add more layers, and the paper did not allow me to do it. For drawing with graphite and charcoal, and all tools for drawing, it's good. But, for colored pencils, is not that good. Thank you for this review, I was think to buy this paper, for try it...I know now, that's not good enough for colored pencils.

I mistakenly used the rough side and not smooth side. OMGOODNESS, big mistake!!! Pencils did not blend well. I bought out a paint brush and dipped in solvent. That did the trick. White spots gone and artwork looks like a painting. Surprised. I like!!!! But will next time use smooth side. I have done some wonderful art on that side.

Have you used “cest it” pencil blend? I use this with the strathmore toned paper and it works really well to get rid of graininess and being able to layer a bit
