TenPoint just announced a 515 feet per second crossbow! Is that too powerful?
I am not sponsored by anyone! But I do share what I like and what I don't like. And I like a good coupon code to save a few bucks as much as you do (see below). My "perfect" crossbow setup these days includes:
Killer Instinct SWAT X1 (starting 2023)
Burris Oracle X Scope (since 2022)
Dragon Claw arrows from Wyvern Creations (good outfit, been buying different gear there for years, these arrows are great in the SWAT)
All of our crossbows use the following, 100% of time:
Burt Coyote Lumenoks (since 2012 or so) (save 10% on lumenok.com with coupon code BUNJIE )
Swhacker #251 3" cutting diameter crossbow broadheads (for our last 20 or 30 deer) (save 10% off select broadheads including this "perfect" model using coupon code BUNJIE2324 on their website: swhacker.com/d... )
Bunjie (The Original Bunjie, The O.B.) is my 2010 Excalibur Axiom that got me hooked on crossbow hunting. This was my "one gun" for more than a decade and Bunjie's reliability is the reason I ONLY hunt with a crossbow. After killing dozens of deer, hogs, squirrels, woodchucks, and even a bear, Bunjie is now semi-retired, but still gets out every year and even killed two deer 2023--and a woodchuck at 81 yards!
Bunjie and I have written two books: The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Method ( amzn.to/3zJbAI0 ) and The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Story ( amzn.to/2Peq4aC ), both available on Amazon.com with those links.
Check out the Gear Page on our website, deathbybunjie.com. Again, I am not sponsored by anyone! But you can see what gear I like and don't like on that site. And if you buy from Amazon.com using one of those links, Death by Bunjie receives a small referral fee and you DO NOT pay more! How cool is that?
Check out the Death by Bunjie podcast, Talking with Bunjie! It's available on deathbybunjie.com or on the podcast app of your choice.
Facebook much? deathbybunjie
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. This crossbow was also a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of our story as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow back in 2020 when I began the Quest for a Successor to Bunjie. Enter Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0, The Slick Black Cadillac of Crossbows), a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker 420, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, a gift from a Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Bunjie III is a testament to modern crossbows, producing over .7 slugs of momentum and almost 140 ft-lbs of kinetic energy with stock arrows--at around 400 fps! This crossbow helped expand the Kingdom fo Bunjie by introducing me to compound crossbows and showing me they're nothing to be feared, and also helped me get my first deer on public ground. This crossbow also inspired the "Rule of 400" that I talk about from time to time: a crossbow that can shoot a 400 grain arrow at 400 feet per second is the definition of a modern crossbow--producing over .7 slugs of momentum and over 140 foot pounds of kinetic energy, the envy of the archery world.
Again, I am not sponsored by these companies. I am sponsored by Friends of Bunjie! (I'm not asking for gifts whatsoever--please don't feel like you should send me stuff! But I do appreciate the support I've received over the years! I'm just trying to express my appreciation for that.)
This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...and music, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, Yankee Militia. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
If you've read this far, then there is only one thing left to say:
All Hail Bunjie!

Hi Rich. I'd like to say how much I appreciate your content. In fact it was coming across your podcasts a couple of years ago that sparked my interest in crossbows, and now I'm hooked! Anyway, after listening to this episode a couple of times, I have one question for the nay sayers in the vertical bow crowd. Would they settle for slower, more antiquated equipment for themselves. Are they willing to give up their modern compound bows and accessories and resort to hunting with long bows and recurves only? And use handmade arrowheads? No! they won't. Even they understand that progress doesn't mean going backwards. and progress isn't necessarily a bad thing. In my opinion it's the allowance of crossbows and it's newer innovations that is attracting newer, younger hunters to the field. It definitely makes my hunting experience more enjoyable. Thanks again for turning me on to crossbows and have a great day!

It's all about Ego! I have heard crazy comments and sure everyone has too, Real hunters don't use crossbows, crossbows are cheating, this is archery that takes real skill by using a real bow, crossbows are wounding more deer because unskilled people are shooting way to far and I'm sure I missed a few. So many of these comments can be picked apart. But isn't that what we want more accurate ways of taking down an animal? I bet we have had more wounded deer by compound bows way more than any crossbows. We are not in the stone age anymore and yes, crossbow or any bow you still have to have skills to be a hunter and I will always go for whatever allows me to make an accurate as possible clean kill and sticking to my crossbow.

Many give up compounds and go to recuves and long bows , it show how much you know, you want to make it as easy as you can , challenge os a word not on your vocabulary, why not use a gun it the same thing and you know it , you just wont admit it.......

@@quantumfx2677you've heard crazy comments and I've heard crazy EXCUSES. Crossbows are a cop out. 90% of archery hunting is getting the draw, having good form and making a good shot WITHOUT BEING DETECTED. It took me 2 arrows to sight in my son's (10 years old) crossbow. The third was a Robin Hood. While you can make the clean ethical kill EXCUSE all day long there is NO SKILL in crossbow. That's why they are not recognized in any reputable archery organizations. I know. I've used both. Crossbows are for people who don't have enough skill for archery. And yes, they take the same unethical shots turkey hunters do with TSS. It's a cop out for weak pathetic hunters with minimal skills. My son graduated to a REAL bow because even he knew(on his own) that crossbow was for pathetic weaklings.

I got a new crossbow last season and chose to stay under 400 FPS even though I spent well over $1000 and could have gotten a much faster bow for that price. Watching this channel was a part of that decision. People were having so many problems with broken limbs and I just didn't want that to be an issue. I wanted a de-cocking crossbow and I put the extra money toward that and I am very happy with the choice. I don't know if you can have "too much" power, but I certainly think you can have enough power to get the job done even in a lower powered crossbow.

I personally think that too much power promotes problems, such as premature cable and center serving wear. This is why Excalibur has a large audience of whom I now belong to. I started 2023 with buying a Ravin and ended with an Excalibur. I've also purchased the X1 in between those two sales thanks to all the hype on crossbow nation. Power equals faster speeds which equals lots of s&c changes. Personally, I would rather have that Matrix hanging on your wall (which I also have) than I would the Swat X1 because it has been sent back to KI due to cable problems and burrs on the cam. With the Excalibur, I can work on it myself and not worry about it. Nice video Rich!!

Death by Bungie what a coincidence that Ten-Point has just released the new TRX 515 crossbow. The new crossbow is measuring just 29” short and 6” narrow, it features new twin risers that reduce riser flex and limb torq for greater down range accuracy, a newly developed custom built trigger tech trigger, a new zero trac barrel, an AR style ambidextrous safety, and new Centerpoint HPX carbon arrows with snap in knocks. And I’m sure as everybody knows by now for a small fortune it can be yours. Here we go again fellas. As usual, what a great talking point, and a great video for us crossbow hunters. Thanks for all you do Rich.

Thank you Rich for not only addressing this issue but also for thinking it through! I honestly believe that if we shoot the manufacturers recommendations you will have no problems. But…. If you do there is a ton of wasted energy and I personally think that is hard on the equipment. Now that I’m trying different types of setups I have also found that the heavier the arrow the nocks wear them selves to the point of being loose after only a few shots. Thank you again for addressing my concerns and I will keep in touch with you and my test results 👍🏻 ! I truly do love this channel!! Thanks again Rich! Mike

You're bringing up another great topic and that is nocks! People don't realize how much energy is forced upon that nock, and what that means. We've seen failures, and that is definitely a piece of equipment that takes a lot of abuse from these Ultra Modern speeds! Seems like they're doing a pretty good job overall with them though.

Well, now Ten-Point has a new snap in knock style carbon arrow with their new TRX 515 crossbow. So it looks like at least they are starting to address this issue on their end. Although I must say with their newer knock design before these new snap in ones, I’ve personally never had an issue with their knocks.

I compete in the IBO and ASA with my KI X-1. I have to detune it to get down to 350 fps with a 450 grain arrow for IBO. I have put over 10,000 shots on a set of limbs. I really think 350 fps is a sweet spot for today’s materials. The bow is very quiet. I have not shot a deer yet that I didn’t get total penetration. I shot a Scorpyd Aculeus with the heaviest limbs they made. It was a pain in the butt. Very loud, and tore up my target. The same bow with 130 pound limbs was much nicer to work with. Your video is quite refreshing in the world of 515 fps crossbows.

MHO short answer is No. Elaboration is.... More speed gets us more range for ethical easy shots. Gets us less time to impact so less ducking. Gets us more forgiveness for bad shots to reach vitals such as very hard quartering away where u have to penetrate lots of deer to get to the vitals. I never worry about shoulders as I love a quartering too deer to bust through that shoulder. I just like the increased range the speed it affords us.

There have been a couple of trolls commenting in this chat area. They’re talking about the same wrongheaded ideas while declaring themselves as experts with the final word that all of us should follow. We are all students of the craft of hunting. We never stop learning. It doesn’t matter if you have your own tv show or not. There are too many that look to themselves as the last word of everything. Mores the pity. Crossbow technology continues to evolve and we all have choices. Isn’t that part of what America is all about?

Great video, as usual. As I posted on your Facebook post about the new bows coming out, I think we are starting to encroach on the limits of the materials being used. That energy is reeking havoc on the components. That being said, I have a 2023 Nitro 505 and love it so far. Its holding up. I got custom arrows from AJs and have a total arrow weight of 491 gr. I have only estimated the speed based on the TP tested speed minus each fps of my heavier arrows and came up with about 487 fps. Thats over 100% efficiency on your website calculator. Hoping this bow will last me many seasons without too much wear and tear. I see on the CBN forum that One Eyed Archer appears to have gotten rid of his 505!

Hi Rich, love the channel! I believe there is a trade of speed vs accuracy…I’ll take the OG on the wall any day of the week! It’s proven and how much speed do you really need? The recurve crossbows simplicity is undeniable and accuracy repeatable. Crossbows are tools that need to be dependable…compound wheels and cables shooting over 350 fps w/electronic range finding scopes tend to make things harder not easier in my experience. Simplicity is key but to each their own…Ive had speed bows but my favorite bows have been my Excalibur 308 shorts probably near Bunjie’s speed and absolutely no complaints here…

I can understand that, I really can, but there is no comparison between 300 ft per second and 400 ft per second. Look at the deer I killed at 22 yards at 263 feet per second and compare that with the deer I killed at 32 yards. I could not have killed that deer at 32 yards with that old crossbow. I really believe that. That would have ended badly.

First love the Quiet Riot reference! Second great topic, I live in Massachusetts where you can only hunt with crossbows if you have a permanent disability. I have an injury to my shoulder that required me to make the switch as my shoulder started to dislocate when I was at full draw. I’m looking at crossbows and really have focused on the ravin 500, nitro 505, now the trx 515, this gives me something to think about. I still like the idea of getting there faster with greater kinetic energy. Also like the reverse draw styles. Lots to evaluate here.

Crossbows are not comparable to firearms. This is true not only in the legal definition, but by practical and hands on standards. Those who try to define what or how hunting “should be” for everyone, routinely fall short in their judgment and understanding many of the issues. Crossbows have been fully included into the fabric of hunting. No one will take away crossbows anymore than they will take away hunting completely. Money does make the world go around. Hunters and the service they provide is to vital to take away. If you live your life based on what makes others happy or live in such a way as to not make some mad, what life are you living? The problems that arise from those who take shots that are too long, or commit other indiscretions is far more about the individual hunter. That’s something that has existed long before any of us were around. People can be imperfect to one degree or another. I hope for a day when antagonists can relax and pay attention to their own business. Or perhaps even support all hunters, wether or not they choose to hunt with a different type of weapon. Hunting is a tradition! A important one at that! This tradition is applied in personal way, based on many individual aspects and teaching experiences. All hail Bunjie!!

Just to note, that's a genius idea of soaking up some of that kinetic force by not using a swhacker broadhead that penetrates before opening with something like a rage or cut-on-contact that uses hide resistance to open a larger entry cut. Might I suggest the muzzy trocan hbx hybrid broadheads for that? You've got the added resistance of substantial bleeder blades with the nearly 2" cut of the expandables. That's a lot of cut entering an animal to soak up some of that kinetic power. If you're gonna overpenetrate, it makes sense to put some resistance on entry and get a larger entry hole with the almost guaranteed large exit hole.

I have a question for you to explore, if you haven't already. What is the bare minimum needed to kill a deer? What is the bare minimum crossbow power and bare minimum arrow weight to send an arrow downrange and will pass through a deer at 60 yards max? I live by the philosophy of match the tool to the job you hope to accomplish, a minimalists perspective. In other words, what is the point of driving a Corvette, Porsche, or Lambo when you can only drive 55 on standard highways? Why drive a race car if you are not racing, or have access to a racetrack? Same concept with crossbows. Why would you bye a Porsche crossbow when your old Jalopy (Bunjie) did the job well enough? I love your videos, by the way. Good hunting to you.

I'm in a nuisance deer program so I get alot of practice. I'm a little fearful of some of these new high energy tools, so much energy. 400 seems to be a good number to me, maybe get one when my bean jar allows it.

Yes. You hit lots of points I was gonna make in comments. Alert deer duck bolts. Never shoot an alert deer with an archery device as you will miss or wound that deer. Use a firearm.. Its not just the noisy discharge of the crossbow. My 2003 Hoyt Ignite is sniffy compared to the amped. I never had issue with deer ducking arrows until I switched to the xbow. Its the person operating the trigger that alerts the deer by scent, noise, being seen, or stand noise. These modern crossbows are like airguns that shoot arrows. Both get an arrow a high velocity but its hard to slow them back down. Now I only own a Centerpoint Amped 415 xbow. With a 400 grain arrow it chronies at 380 fps. 425 runs 375 fps. The comment from the guy at shields is that the newer faster centerpoint models have issues with timing. Older ones are better. And arrows sometimes are easily found close to where deer got shot and some are lost. I lost 1 bolt the season and took 3 deer so far this season with the xbow. I dont have the loot for the state of the art as I am just a common man that can get it done. Its heavy but I compensate with a single point sling. I hunt in a saddle now as I feel safe. I will try blind hunting next year. Fashioning a blind from natural materials. Also grabbed a computer flat screen mount from work they were gonna pitch last week. I use this to make a crossbow shooting platform for the blind....so I don't have to hold it and it doesn't move around....but thats a different topic. Perhaps you need a common man series. Originally I was gonna sell this xbow to pawnshop when string went bad and buy a new one. But it does such a good job, I put a $150 string on it. Like I mentioned to you in the past, I zero at 20 yards with 3 bolts all numbered each shooting at a numbered corresponding 3/4 inch sticker dot at 20 yards. Then I go to 40 and 50 and refine poi with the speed dial on the scope. Still my rule is this side of 30 to 35 yard deer that are unalert. GOD BLESS

I'm thinking that blowing on a caller , not a buck caller but maybe a songbird , crow , turkey , etc . , whilst shooting might mask the noise of crossbows and hopefully not alert the deer ? What are your experiences with calling ?

Always excellent data to consider sir, in general I also lean toward speed as much as possible, if the deer is keyed up like the doe you shot with the OB it matters, the other doe did not react before impact, I always plan for a quick deer, crossbow speed is crucial, my crossbow set up is a Ripper 425 with a 290 grain bolt plus a Swhacker 2" cut 100 grain head, many deer harvested, always an exit. Flat, fast and accurate, it has worked great for me. -W. Liggett

I knew this discussion would emerge. Once you get to see what 500+ fps really is, you learn the consequences of what it is also. Is 500+ fps the most practical option? No. This is wholly different from 450 fps. Once you get your hands on it, you see that now you need more careful attention to the archery targets you buy. You need to more carefully select the broadheads you use that are up to the task. You also run the greater risk of loosing your arrows. These consequences are real and meaningful. On the upside, you get super flat trajectory, incredible time of flight and the flexibility to use varieties of good broadheads, no matter the weight or width. Who cares if your arrow setup is 600 grains! You still have the speed and power beyond all else. Jumping the string? If anyone thinks that a deer could truly do so out to 50-60 yards, so me the proof! I don’t believe it. In fact, I think the 505 hits a 50 yard target faster that a lot of crossbows could on 25-30 yards. I know now that 500+ fps isn’t for everyone. Still, I do love my 505! I haven’t lost any arrows with it yet. I have found targets that will take a close range shot, but only one to the same bullseye. I have taken deer with it and so long as the arrow is placed through the chest cavity, death can be timed with a stopwatch, not a wristwatch. Literally seconds. I do hunt at times in urban areas where allowing the chance for the deer to run any further than necessary would be an inconvenience that is not desirable. With a shoulder shot from the 505, I’ve seen busted joints and broken ribs. The carnage is substantial and perhaps this is a bonus with quick recovery of the deer. Nonetheless, I have had no problems with my 505 and it’s been super accurate. Would I be tempted to buy the TRX 515? Personally, nah. The 505 is bad enough. Anything beyond that seems to stretch practically further and thinner.

Last year I was in the market for a new crossbow. I could of bought a 505 Nitro or an R500, or a cool looking ultracompact Ravin 29x. What stopped me is the realization that there's no free lunch with the über high performance bows. One pin out to 45yds? That's pretty cool, but at what price? I can't justify 4 grand+ for a bow and optics to tote around public land. Actually, that sounds kind of ridiculous the more I think about it. But poorly made financial decisions aside, everything changes with these short hotrods. They don’t exactly check off any boxes for reliability or ease of use. They just look cool and go fast....

My 390fps rated Turbo S1 is more than enough for me. Great ratings, it came in under my budget, adequate speed for 30 yard shots, and less issues in the long run, in my opinion, than the 500fps + crossbows will have. Plus it has the accuslide cooking and decocking mechanism which I needed this year after surgery on my arm. I could have gone with more speed but I think it really hits the sweet spot for me. And it has already killed two deer for me its first year of use. Plus, getting it from wyvern creations it came with extra arrows, 3 broadheads, and a sling for the same price. Time will tell if it holds up but for now I'm very happy with it!

I think there are a couple of levels to this. On one hand, speed, arrow weight, FOC, etc. are all measurable and real, and have mostly predictable results. On the other hand, there is the issue of perception, which doesn’t always line up with reality. I have been hunting with long bows for 40 years, and as I have aged the poundage, I could manage has decreased I have played with FOC in my low, poundage bows and managed pass-throughs deer more than once by being careful and shot placement and distance. But then my shoulder just gave and in order to continue to hunt with archery equipment I had to go to crossbow. I bought an Excalibur which produces about 325 FPS with my 425g bolt. I’ve also shot this through a deer or two. Wow it really seems fast to me. I can’t imagine needing more speed than this thing has so if I had come from shooting a compound at 300 FPS might my perception of this be different? Yes I think so.

That extra speed you're talking about isn't a waste of energy. It's for the plan "B" idea. What if the deer/moose/elk etc is standing a bit different than you originally thought and you hit big bones? The extra speed gives the arrow more ability to compensate. Definitely not a waste!

Shot one rated at 405 fps last week. Speed is impressive, but not possible to use a string cocker. Required a crank which I find annoyingly time consuming and rattly to fool with. I think it pulled 210 lbs. Crossbows that shoot around 350 work great to 30 yards regarding impacting the deer before it can significantly drop at that range. More fun to shoot too, and I guess they tend to not self destruct as much based on other people's comments.

When we start getting into some serious power we can kiss a 20-30$ arrow & broad head good bye, taking game can then start to get very expensive. Crossbow companies should aim at accuracy as much as possible and I will be looking at ten points new center brace that's suppose to increase the accuracy for even more accurate tighter shots! I think we are getting to advancements in plenty of speed and should be working on if its possible to make these crossbows more quiet, lighter, well balanced, excellent safety, easier to draw. 2024 will be interesting on how much more has improved.

Buy a SWAT x1. LOL haha. But seriously something that shoots about 400 ft per second with a 400 grain Arrow will be just fine for most modern targets. Blocks and bags alike. If you go up to 440 and above you will be looking at 500 ft per second and 650 ft per second targets which are a lot more expensive and harder to find. Especially for broadheads. Not that that is impossible, but I think the sweet spot right now is that 400 at 400. That's for me personally. Going to do a bunch of videos in the next month or so about new crossbows so there will be lots of tidbits in there about choosing one. Hope that helps! Welcome to crossbows!

I don't see "necessary" as being relevant. I WANT as much speed as possible. But at 500 fps there's too much energy for modern targets, components, nocks etc or at least in some cases there are. In a few years maybe we'll be caught up and 500 will be the new 400. In fact, I'd say that's likely, just like 400 is the new 300.

@@Deathbybunjie maybe hopefully not though because that will have other issues too. Different countries have different laws. If all crossbows went 500 plus they won’t sell in Canada because now you need a gun licence with anything 500fps plus. If you need the license you may as well buy a rifle it’s cheaper. One of the benefits to the crossbow is that it gets you into early season and don’t need the extra license. I think under 400 fps is best, I think the crossbow shooting so fast that your going to have a hard time with arrow flight and broadhead problems not to mention how loud they are. I shot a fast compound bow at 333 fps thru the chronograph. I now shoot a Ten point viper S400 at 392 fps. I had to switch to a crossbow after 2 neck fusions 😢 . I have shot some nice bucks with a crossbow and me personally after bow hunting for 40 years I think archery hunting should be a close range sport not the 60- 100 shots people are taking with a crossbow. It's still a stick flying through the air and unlike a target deer move and just one step is enough for you to make a bad shot and wound a deer you won't find. Me personally the crossbow shooting super fast is too much and just causing flight problems and wounded deer. I still shoot my deer at 25 yards or closer.

Great video but in my opinion speed and energy go hand in hand with accuracy shooting a modern crossbow gives your target less time to react to the sound of the crossbow going off and the animals ducking the shot . Energy is a great byproduct of the modern crossbows as far as penetration go's when it comes to a not so perfect shot like hitting a shoulder blade and driving that arrow through into the vitals to recover your animal
