we compare what how much does a cruise cost vs how much it would cost to each of the cruise stops on your own via plane, train and boat.
the result is surprisingly cheap.
If you are looking for a cheap cruise, this video is for you.
so maybe cruises are cheap. we recently went on the virgin voyages cruise ship sailing around the mediterranean sea stopping at 4 ports along the way
we set sail from barcelona spain, then we visited the city of marseille in france, followed by cannes in the south of france, then we sailed over to olbia in sardinia (an italian island) and then we finally stopped in ibiza (a balearic island near spain), before heading back to the beautiful city of barcelona.
The cruise experience was not what we expected, with parties, amazing restaurants (no buffets), and the most amazing amenities you could imagine.
the cruise ship had a gym, a swimming pool, hot tubs, 5 star restaurants a vinyl record shop, a spa, karaoke booths and loads more amazing amenities.
we were shocked by how many things you could do on the cruise ship, so we made a top 5 list of best things to do on a cruise ship.
this is probably the best cruise ship in the world, on the best cruise ship route in europe.

You didnt account for, travel to and from accomodation to transport to change locations as well as you don't have to pack your bags constantly, cruises have endless free entertainment, you have someone come and make up you room everyday.

See a lot of people saying the cruise is better. Personally I would be more interested in controlling my destinations, and potentially side tracking where I want to. I think there are a lot of downsides to cruises other that the money, like set destinations on a finite schedule, the close quarters on the ship, etc. So really I think it just depends on what you want to do during your trip

I've done it both ways. Going in a cruise is a LOT cheaper and less stress. I live traveling on my own and pay as I go, but it's just so much easier to do a cruise. I go on 21 day cruises and you can't beat the price and you don't have to check for bed bugs but one time, otherwise I'm checking for bedbugs every time I check in a hotel otherwise. And yes all hotels can have bedbugs regardless of their ranking or brand. #1 thing i always check for.

Not to forget the cruise can be even cheaper if you don't splurge on a nice room. You're not going to be in your room often other than sleeping so I'd definitely take one of the cheaper lower deck rooms.

Absolutely. I lose between half and one full day. Every time I travel anywhere. They haven’t taken into account all the entertainment that is given, all the tea and coffee. That’s free in the buffet areas lots of other things

What transportation you would be walking around sites and exploring most of the time with an occasional bus ride maybe and the trains and flights could be at night giving you full opportunitys

It depends what you're looking for. If you just want to go to those countries, you can definitely fly there; if you want the cruise experience, it isn't much of a price difference - so it's just personal preference :)

We did that cruise with Marella Cruises and all flights, food and drinks for 7 nights, £1,600 for 2 people. Tip here, don’t go via Virgin Cruises.

Sweetie, there are classes among cruise ship companies, and you just can not compare Marella with Virgin. Choose whatever suits you, but do not advise others to do same in such manner.

@@savannahopal5681 Hmmm lets think about it. Could it possibly be that they emitt more CO2 than every other way of travel? Or that you spend more time on a boat than in an actual city? Or that the food is garbage compared to what you would get for the same price in local restaurants? Or that they damage the sight seeing as they are ugly as fuck? Or that they also damage the ecological system where they "park"? Or that they are actually bad for local tourism? Could it POSSIBLY be one of those reasons?

You can definitely get the cruise for half that price if you're willing to stay in an inside room in the bowels of the ship with no windows. And you have the entire ship to stretch out and walk around in, so the room doesn't really matter.

I have visited many countries. No planning needed. You know when you are moving on, so just like going out to the shops you grab your bits and go to the airport/bus station/port.. you wont have loads of baggage as you are seeing places & not living there. There is more risk of leaving things the longer you stay somewhere. I have been all over asia, every country in Western Europe never have i found it to be a faff as i don’t take lots with me. Being on a cruise i would see as being more restricted as you are only in each location for exactly xxx amount of time. Constantly chasing deadlines & planning all the time.. even so much as cant stop at shop for last minute bits because you were caught in a cue/line for to long & you have to get back to the ship asap!!!

Actually it’s mostly the cruise place you travel with. For carnival a one month trip cost around 1k AUD (if you have travelled once before) this is cheaper then a flight from the place you start to the place to finish. As well as giving you free accommodation, free entertainment etc.

Its illogical argument I could travel that for much less than your quote staying in really cheap hostels or hotels, eating out less, cutting down on travel costs but the cruises provide a more easy and more luxurious experience at the cost of that sense of adventure you get solo travelling.

Yeah but you’re cruising on Virgin. Find a cheaper cruise line. And you didn’t tell us what type of hotels are staying out and who you’re flying with on your air flights. Nor did you include the entertainment that’s available on a cruise ship for free and that you can eat many meals on a cruise ship, not just three. And summary, this is not a fair comparison. For $74 it’s worth the hassle of changing hotels every day.

And don't forget the cruise cabin is equivalent to a 4*/5* hotel with entertainment/show included so those hotels in each city are never less than 100/150 gbp per night. And you are quoting a very expensive cruise ship. Already did a Mediterranean Cruise with Costa for GBP 380.00 per person for 7 nights.

Virgin is also a relatively expensive cruise line (although the included drinks are a benefit). That trip would be a lot cheaper with a budget line (MSC, Costa, ...) or if you snap up a last minute deal.

The only downside to going on your own is not knowing what to do in those destinations without prior research vs cruises that have set excursions and recommendations. Now the downside to a cruise is you have a time frame so imagine 7am to 4pm in that city vs being there the whole day and doings things at your own pace. I mean I rather do it solo if I pre-planned on everything and had extra for spontaneous adventures. If however the places I'm visiting are expensive destinations perhaps I would do the cruise.

I don't like cruise ships a lot, because you have such less time... I'm rather be in a smaller area but can go every day in an other city/village as a day trip... I made 3x 2 weeks on the côte d'azur in my whole live, like every time 4 years a part... Staying at the same Appartment but visiting every day new places... It was always relaxing and much more beautiful than my 11-days west Europe cruise, where everyday was just to short to see the city... And this many totally different cities it was also stressful, mind boggling and not easy to remember what i done in every city... And just a few times to relax...

Cruises are poison. Huge carbon emissions, the staff can be on slave wages, and you literally ruin all the authenticity and purpose of travel. You end up eating cruise food rather than local food. Food and culture are interlinked so you are missing a huge portion of the reason you travel. All of your money also goes into the pockets of the cruise company rather than the locals trying to make a living in the country you are visiting and dirtying like an amusement park. Lastly, if you go to a popular destination like Santorini, you never experience the real thing and are ruining the atmosphere of the place because you get off the ship with thousands of other people, ruining the quaintness of the place you are at. You are experiencing everything as part of a huge group of people…that is soulless.

Yes it’s pollution but that’s the only thing you got right here I’m friends with a guy who works on a cruise, he gets paid A LOT and is not by contract but he picks the months he works and then for 6 months he’s off work When you visit the countries you get off ship and eat their food and experience the whole thing, if you fly there you’ll still be in a hotel with hotel food The thing with tourists and santorini that’s gonna happen anyway mate because it’s a famous place, you fly or cruise either way it’s gonna be packed You got one thing right at the start then tried to say the rest was correct

@@deeznuts23yearsago no unfortunately you’re wrong just accept it. You might have one mate who gets paid well but what about everyone else and every other cruise line? Did you know in the Philippines (where a lot of workers come from)the government had created laws in agreement with cruise companies to limit the compensation for bodily harm suffered by workers? It also limits their wages. Places like Santorini would not be the same without cruises. Yes they are popular destination, but cruises create crush problems. When else, other than a cruise would thousands of people all appear at the exact same minute of the same day? Never. People in these places tell you what times to do things to avoid cruise ships. Why do you think places like Venice have literally placed laws limiting cruise ship numbers? If you think staying in a hotel means people stay there and eat the hotel food I think that shows the problem with your mindset. That is simply not what people do haha people on cruises do not get off cruise and spend the same time or money in countries as regular travelers because they’ve already PAID for all of their inclusions. Don’t kid yourself. Travel is also with a daily curfew and no flexibility…you are rushing around ticking boxes.

Cruises are nice man. Go on a cruise have a nice time. Also who cares about Santorini or most of these places on the Mediterranean. Their just poor Mediterranean cities that produce nothing and would be nothing without tourism. Their filled with lazy southern Europeans who complain that the Germans run everything and are the reason for all their problems.

Think I’d prefer to do it on my own as you get to decide the timetable and how long you spend where. Cruises are slow & more time spent on the boat than in those places. Trains and planes are faster.

It all comes down to cruise line and deals. My husband gets great deals on cruises because he gambles in the casinos onboard. We’re going on a 9 night Mediterranean visiting Italy, Greece, Croatia and Montenegro in a balcony room for $600 a person. We’re spending 5 days in France and 5 days in Italy before the cruise and the total with airfare per person is $2100

Cruises are bad for the towns they visit though…. They pollute as much as a million cars. Even at the harbor they still pollute alot for the local air quality. The tourist are frown oppon as they come in huge bulk, take pictures throu the windows of peoples homes, walk in they front yard like it was a museum and they leaves next to no money behind cause they eat on the boat. The boats are huge and is an eye thorn for the view.

This is misleading. You would not visit 5 cities in 7 days on land. You would waste too much time in transportation and checking into hotels. 2 cities is realistic for a 7 day trip. At that point, the price is comparable. And you get to explore and know the city better.

I went on a 2 week holiday a few years ago - week 1 was a Greek/Cypriot/Turkish cruise and then the second week was a week in a hotel in Cyprus. The cruise was awful, we were seasick the entire time, the food was dreadful and if you wanted to do any of the half decent entertainment there were extra charges. The week in Cyprus was much more relaxing, we were in a resort so it was similarly confined to the cruise but it was much better

The only downside I can think of with cruises is that they often don’t stay overnight at a port. So you only get to explore the city for a couple of hours before you have to leave

The food on the cruise is worth much more than you are quoting for meal prices. Not to mention endless free food and drinks outside of meal time. Plus you haven’t included all of the free activities on the cruise that would cost hundreds more pounds if you also did those on your own. You’re probably about £1000 short on your non-cruise comparison. And that’s without the inconvenience factored in of doing this on your own.

You wouldn’t do the same itinerary. Do Switzerland, Austria and Czechia and transport is suddenly much cheaper. Stay in hostels. Cabins are far smaller than hotel rooms. Bottom line is if you want to do a cruise itinerary, do that but the majority of itineraries are uncruisable.

Forgetting one thing. On a cruise, while traveling, you can live your life, if you do it alone, you have to sit down. So, if you calculate time wasted, seems like that specific cruise is quite cheap.

The other question is who would independently rush through 5 cities in 7 days? What would be the point, would it be remotely pleasant or just endlessly frustrating? A single day & night in Barcelona (minus travel time) is a massive waste of a journey (although it's arguably plenty for Cannes). This kind of cruising only makes sense if you actively value the shipboard experience (and food) and view the land excursions as a taster menu, the marine equivalent of a bus tour of a city: you're not really visiting these places, you're visiting a ship and these are things you can see from it. Although it wouldn't be for me at all, it certainly seems better than trying that exact same itinerary under your own steam.

If you want to explore a few coastal cities for a day, cruises can’t be beat. If you want to explore one or two destinations for several days and get a real feel for the culture, cruises aren’t a good option.

That’s the price we paid for a 10 day cruise to the Mediterranean. Pick a different cruise line. Plus, we had a balcony suite.

Cruise is by far better and more worth it even if it was a lot more. You don't have to constantly go looking for somewhere to eat or running around to the airport.

Those prices you quoted for your meals on your own are not even realistic anymore, unless you plan to eat fast food or from street food vendors The meals on the cruise ship are far superior and unlimited. The lugging your suitcases to all those five places and the waiting time to get on your transportation modes have not been considered. You would be spending your time hanging out at the airports or bus and train terminals without having a chance ti sight see anything. What’s the point of doing it on your own like this to save 75$. At least after you have looked around the the city the cruise ship has ported at you get to come back on for excellent meals , entertainment and a good sleep and you don’t have to pack and unpack every night like you will have to or live out of your suitcase

A 4-person group would tilt the cost towatds going at it on your own. A smaller group makes taci fare, AirBnB and meals sharing (for fare variety) expwnsive. With Google, Grab and other apps, you can refine your itinerary for the nth time even bwfore you make the trip, which makes it more engaging.

... I'll take two tickets please ... solo cruising was not an option ... but for 2 people it is like taking your hotel and all its glory .... food & Beverage ... included ...bars, pools and pizza free ice cream everywhere all included in your fare it's a real deal and park once ...

Fun fact: -£74 cheaper is actually £74 more expensive because of how maths works. Subracting a negative number will make the operation invert.

Depends.. mostly no depending on what your passport is maybe .. most eu citizens and North American citizens are fine since visas are normally not required or on arrival

My only hesitation with the cruise is you usually only get a day at each destination. I think I'd prefer to plan my own trip and decide how long I get to visit each country.

If one of you works for an airline, you can get STUPID cheap cruises and resorts. We usually get around 80% off all inclusive resorts - and we pay pennies on the dollar for flights

I'm not much of a planner so I prefer crusing on a big ship (wonder OTA for eg). Although I'd prefer spending more time in the city, the free unlimited food and entertainment and not having to worry about local crime pulls me back to cruise ships.

Defore worth thr adventure to do it alone. Though you could get rid of the extra fig5htd (and avoid ibiza) you could keep your destinations on ths continent, and do it for a similar price for 4 weeks in thr car, and have a proper adventure. You could travel, dover to la mans, to Zaragoza, then done to the med, traven east down the med, barc, Andorra, montpellier, marseille, nice, Monaco, pisa halfway down italy ro rome, across to perscara, up to venice, west to milan, across the swiss alps thrn on to france france, north to dijon or sissons, then back to callais. Thst is a fantastic loop. And a pair or more csn do it ar 50 per night (in rentals) , about 600 in fuel. So 2k ish before food. Or pluss thr ferry whaich is bnout 100. Now thsts an adventure. Also it means you can avoid airports and not be locked up on a ship.

Yes but also you're on a finite schedule and at least for people already in Europe it's way cheaper. I can get a flight to barcelona for example for 195 poundsfor 2 people. It's 112 for a flight to paris abd 300 for roam being the most expensive.
