I am from NJ, the story of the Jersey devil goes back to the colonial times. Also known as the Leeds Devil. It was the baby of Mr and Mrs Leeds. Way to long of a story for me to type in here. The origins run deeper then the description given back in the early 20th century. Has an interesting origin actually. Great video, fun stuff.

I'm a jersey girl and my brother in-law said he and his friend saw a huge bird flying over the trees while they were at Round Valley Park. He said it looked like a tetradactyl. He's not the kind of guy who would tell stories like that at all. Happened when he was young I would say late 70's very early 80's. Have to say he might have been stoned but, still I believe he saw something because he is not the kind of guy that would make things up. As far as the Jersey Devil.. In the case of the Jersey Devil, there is another possible explanation that is far less fantastic. Historically, secluded places like the Pine Barrens were used as dumping grounds for deformed children. I know it’s messed up but it’s sadly the truth. Some of these children survived and for fear of persecution and death would scare off anyone who came into the woods, sometimes with elaborate costumes made from animal parts like furs and antlers. I think this may be where M. Night Shyamalan got the idea for the creature in The Village. Locals in the area also would have spread scary stories about monsters in the Pine Barrens in order to keep the ugly truth hidden. Just a theory. Love this cryptid game, awesome fodder for thought 🤙

The Pine Barrens are a really unique ecosystem and has a lot of unique flora and fauna found no where else such as a lot of fish species that can survive in seder water which is very acidic and dechamental to eggs plus has alot of endangered species such as Northern Pine snake and Pine Barrens Tree Frog and as a NJ resident and animal/nature lover believe the pine barrens should be listed as a National Park because of it being such a unique habitat. Mothman was just a barn owl. I can't remember what the show or special was, but there is this awesome study scientists did in America on what the creature was. They first proved that people couldn't judge size in the sky very well. They had people try to guess the size of a kite and people were wildly wrong (people said things from a few feet to tens of feet long, as much as 50 feet long). The original sighting was at night, so that only added to the confusion. Barn owls have red eye shine, have a huge windspan (I think it's like 5-6 feet), and their screech (which is terrifying) matches the description of the sound the creature made. I am very convinced that it was misidentification. It was seen by a bunch of teenagers in the 50's making out in their car in the woods. So maybe there was some drinking but I'm convinced a sober person could make the same mistake. I'd prefer you guys use this explanation as opposed to "a bunch of people were high on shrooms" explanation (which I get is partially a joke). I could try to find it for you if you'd like it is extremely convincing.

Regarding the Jersey Devil: Josh Gate on his show Expedition X did an episode on it. They investigated the origins of the myth, and they came to a conclusion that it was part slander to ruin the reputation of a prominent family. And also, that it was most likely sightings of the Hammer Headed Bat.

Mothman sightings could be sightings of large bats that people have then exaggerated to be larger and more human looking than they actually are

I’m guessing the Stellers sea ape is a northern sea Otter. It’s close in description and it would make sense for him to see it where he did. They grow to about five feet, have dog like faces, drooping whiskers. The behavior isn’t outrageous for a sea otter either. They are curious and sometimes playful animals. The shark like Fins could simply have been a mistake.

Ever seen a full grown snowy owl? They've been recorded as far south as Texas in certain occasions. A 6ft wingspan could easily be exaggerated by a few feet to be a flying man

I had a friend in high school who was from point pleasant and his mom grew up not far from the bridge that collapsed. His mom and grandma were the ones who told me the story because grandma hadta go get his mom from school and was delayed due to the bridge situation. Im not sayin its real based on 1 grandmas account but she said itd been seen a few times and always showed up a few days before something bad happens and then would be spotted again at the place where the shit happened. It's funny how little people know about nj beyond New York area. They hear some jokes about highways bc that's what a tiny portion of the state looks like near NYC and they think that's the whole thing. Like even Forrest said "when they used to have tons of fauna" NJ's loaded with animals, especially in the north west and southern 3rd. The pine barrens are bigger than Yosemite or the Grand Canyon reserve.

Since u brought up the Great Horned Owl, I used to live out on this old farm in the middle of nowhere. Anyways there was a great horned owl that I would see on a nearly daily basis, would always sit up in a big dead tree shortly before dark. I shit u not it was 4 feet tall and thick and had a huge broad wingspan and I could definitely see someone not knowing what it is seeing an owl like that in low light and bam u got a monster!!

As a New Jerseyan I’m curious as to what Forrest meant by we’d know if it was real being in NJ. I think there possibly is something out there but it’s not this supernatural creature. I do like Forrest’s theory as to how it came about. It’s probably the most likely scenario. The Sea-Ape is probably just a different species of Seal in that area or something close to a seal.

For Mothman, I think it might be some large carrion bird like a vulture, possibly appearing as it smells approaching death or disaster. Some of those vultures/buzzards etc are insanely creepy and scary looking up close. I wonder if as the bridge collapsed it could smell/detect whatever fear of death pheromones being omitted or recognized the sound of the bridge structure about to collapse as a potential source of future food? Maybe that would account for similar types of sightings around the world where these type of “cryptids” are spotted before or right after disasters, as carrion birds are very effective at finding deceased things to eat. That + mass hysteria following a disaster = cryptid flying scary monster. Humanoid face is explained by how creepy their heads can look which we rarely see up close 🤷🏼‍♀️

Few things wrong on the mothman. He was never sighted as resembling a moth, the name came from an at-the-time popular batman villain. Most witnesses described him as a headless, furry/feathered man with wings and red eyes

Love this idea. I know this was just a fun little thing but I'd recommend finding & directly quoting eyewitness accounts when possible like the "sea-ape". Maybe talk about the associated legend 1st then get into direct testimony quotes cause u r then getting into more the the meat of what it could be. For instance the "mothman" witnesses. There were many sightings by multiple ppl on multiple occasions. The 1st sighting from what I remember whatever they saw followed alongside their car at night. They stated it had large circular red eyes & they believed it was flying as it was keeping pace. Imo this sounded possibly like a large owl & since they were scared it could have seemed larger in the moment.

The Jersey Devil, all the descriptions that I've seen or heard of seems to resemble the Hammerhead bat and to me has been exaggerated by misidentified and with a bit exaggerated by people being hysterical when they came across something strange that they couldn't explain

My Dad was born and raised in point pleasant, had several friends who died in the bridge collapse, the most prominent sighting is in point, but there actually has been sightings all over the world of the creature being followed by disasters and has been speculated to be an oman of sorts.

Also the fact the the Jersey devil is depicted with six limbs, which is improbable for a vertebrate. So unless you’re looking for a supernatural or extraterrestrial explanation for it, it’s basically disproven.
