A dummy battery allows you to continously charge a camera that does not natively support AC charging or USB charging.
In this video I review whether it is safe to do so.

7.7V is fine. A freshly charged LP-E12 will be up around 8.4V (even though it is 'rated' for 7.4V).

The Original Canon Version is 7.4v. I'd recommend Glorich currently has one which is also 7.4v which is what I currently have. My Original Canon dummy battery doesnt work it turns my camera off after a while. That explains why Canon Discontinued it from there website.

I usually lean towards 'try the cheap option' just because there is usually nothing to lose. If something doesn't work, you haven't wasted much money. When it comes to 'something sending electricity into your valuable equipment', I'm being guided by you, and by other commenters here, towards buying the official Canon one. 500 quid camera, 200+ quid lens on it (everyone should remember that the lens takes power too, for focus/stabilising), and that's all at risk for the sake of saving 40-50 quid for the dummy battery. I will still use cheap batteries in the camera, but only because those aren't attached to the mains. If I do get the dummy battery, I'll stick with Canon... but will obviously shop around for a good deal!
@KevinMuldoon
@KevinMuldoon 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It would be very risky to I was able to cancel the cheap dummy battery that was coming before it arrived. There aren't many deals in the UK for it. In fact, there aren't many shops selling it. There's like two shops selling it for around £70. I'm going to take a step back from it just now as I need to add more USB roothubs to my computer in order to add more cameras. So I will sort that problem out first and then review the camera issue. When I do, the question is "Will I buy the dummy battery for £70, or put that money to a new camcorder that supports USB or AC charging?" :)

Dummy Batteries work, they don't have problems with Voltage spikes because it has a voltage regulator , you see the black box inbetween the camera and the wall outlet, that will protect from a voltage spike, now some people use a USB connection to power their camera to the wall and that is a no no, that will blow your camera if there is a voltage spike. because when you connect a power source to the USB that funnels the power from the USB though the Camera's mainboard then to the power connections, but dummy battery it doesn't go directly tot he camera's main board.. the other option if your afraid, is get a dummy battery and then connect the dummy battery to a Anker Powercore 26800 PD this is a battery source that gives power delivery because it's a big battery you will never get a voltage spike. look up Anker powercore 26800 PD it will work fine..

You should copy pasted the listing from the other website onto either Google, or to Amazon, or better yet pasted B&H Photo’s search bar. You most likely would’ve gotten the more official a dummy battery if you would’ve done that, particularly if you had a copied the listing and posted it in the search of an official a canon a retailers a search bar like B&H photo, even Best Buy would’ve probably given you a A better result is they are official a Canon retailers same thing with Walmart, all these retailers would’ve given you the official Canon a dummy battery, or more certified third-party dummy batteries for that camera. Also battery retailers may have more official dummy batteries them selves for that type of camera. For me I trust authorize retailers but I always tried to copy the listing for a the items that I am looking for, for my devices and then re-posting them to the authorized retailers in search bar. Hey, if you have a Sony A5100 and buy a good quality dummy battery for it, will it be able to stay on the whole day and start recording and streaming at any time with no problem?
@KevinMuldoon
@KevinMuldoon 3 жыл бұрын
It depends. I bought a dummy battery for my A6500 two weeks ago. It doesn't appear to provide power any longer than a USB cable. The reason is temperature. When recording in 4K, the sensor overheads after an hour or so. For 1080p, this does not appear to be a problem with the dummy battery or with USB charging. So whilst the dummy battery can provide continuous power, your main obstacle is overheating.

Hey Kevin long time and not seen a video of yours. As you may or may not know I have an original Canon M and a cheap dummy battery. For me it has worked fine for years. I am not a heavy user of the camera and mix between photo and video use. When shooting talking head video then using the dummy battery is great as I know power will be ok. As for you with a newer model camera I would probably go for the branded version. It’s not that I don’t care. However it’s cheaper for me to replace my old camera than your m50 should I ever have a problem. As you say, the cameras are built to use the dummy battery. I look forward to seeing what you choose.

That's good you haven't had any problems. I think some people have been lucky with them, but the scare stories do concern me. I can't tell you if that another battery that I've plugged first that didn't work that probably did that smell , maybe I was able to take it off on time before it burned the camera.... one thing I can tell you is that I had the camera on with this second camera for about 4 hrs and nothing happened@@KevinMuldoon

Dummy batteries are such a crapshoot. I bought the expensive Kondor Blue 'regulated' dummy battery for my Lumix S1. Supposed to take 12-17v input, output 8v. I plugged it into my np-f plate 12v output, and camera wouldn't turn on. I checked with pins on the dummy battery, and wouldn't you know it, 12v, no regulation to 8v. Luckily, my camera still works normally with a battery, but damn. Could have fried it. Lying companies. No reputable company is putting out a decent dummy battery. None. It's a gamble. I've used them successfully, and unsuccessfully. Sad.
